Paul Calento, publisher of CMP Media's Software Development magazine, announced a twenty-five percent circulation expansion to 100,000, effective with the March 2001 issue.

The New York Times announced that Alexis Buryk, vice president, advertising has been promoted to group vice president, advertising sales. Effective immediately, her additional responsibilities will include co-managing The Times's Customer Order Fulfillment Center (COF) as well as coordinating group advertising sales efforts with The Boston Globe, the Regional Newspaper Group, The International Herald Tribune and New York Times Digital. Ms. Buryk will continue to report to Jyll Holzman, senior vice president, advertising, who made the announcement.

United Parenting Publications, publisher of 28 regional parenting publications across the country, announced the appointment of Bill Lindsay as Editor in Chief. Lindsay comes to UPP after having directed editorial operations of the nationally recognized Boston Parents' Paper (now a UPP publication) for 10 years, as well as three other regional parenting publications, ancillary products and websites, such as LocalMom.com and ParentingQA.com.

Bertelsmann AG announced the appointment of Joel Klein as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bertelsmann, Inc., and Chief U.S. Liaison Officer to Bertelsmann AG, headquartered in Gutersloh, Germany. Klein was most recently head of the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In his new role, he will also serve as a key strategic advisor to Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Middelhoff.

Work.com, a resource for business, announced it has entered into a content agreement with VNU eMedia, Inc., the new media arm of international publisher VNU Business Media. Effective today, VNU will provide content on a daily basis to Work.com's Media and Advertising & Marketing Industry from media industry publications including Adweek, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, Mediaweek, and Editor & Publisher.

The Board of Directors of Line56, a source of B2B ecommerce news and community building, has appointed Brian Cronin as publisher. In this role he will add sales management of line56.com to his responsibilities and will drive cross-platform sales initiatives in conjunction with Line56Live!Events. Cronin joined Line56 from Inter@ctiveWeek, an Internet publication from Ziff-Davis, where he was associate publisher.

The Board of Directors of Fandom Inc., a fantasy, science fiction, horror and animation network, announced that Debra Streicker-Fine has been named CEO. She takes over for company founder and CEO, Mark Young, who will continue to work with the company as an adviser. The Streicker-Fine appointment comes on the heels of the acquisitions of Cinescape and Creation Entertainment.

emapusa has named a new chief financial officer -- Keith Marriott -- it was announced by emap usa Chief Executive Officer Tom Moloney. Marriott will be based in Los Angeles. Marriott joined the company in 1988 as Finance Director of the Emap Consumer Magazine Division in the U.K., and was one of the original team that led Emap's International expansion. Marriott also has worked extensively in both France and Australia.

Roy Gutman has been named diplomatic correspondent in the Newsweek Washington bureau, Editor Mark Whitaker and Washington Bureau Chief Dan Klaidman announced recently. Gutman, who will join the magazine on February 5, comes from Newsday, where he covered foreign affairs from Washington and served as a foreign correspondent. Prior to Newsday, he was Belgrade bureau chief and a reporter in Central Europe for Reuters.

Standard Media International (``The Standard'') announced the promotion of Kate Rodler to associate publisher, west, effective immediately. Rodler previously served as The Standard's advertising director for the western region. As associate publisher, Rodler will continue the goals of expanding The Standard's base of advertisers, including the business-to-business and consumer categories, and the expansion of The Standard's West Coast sales offices. In addition, Rodler will continue to oversee the West Coast sales staff

Cygnus Business Media announced the promotion of Bill Schiffner to Associate Publisher and Editor-In-Chief, Photographic Processing magazine. He will oversee the editorial direction of the publication. He will also participate in the sales process and help run the day-to-day business operations.

Journal Register Company's previously announced sale of The Times Reporter (including Midwest Offset, one of the Company's commercial printing companies), located in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and The Independent, in Massillon, Ohio, to The Copley Press, Inc. was completed. Total daily circulation of the two newspapers is 38,000.

HarperCollins Publishers announced the launch of HarperTools, an online sales support service. The site, which has been successfully tested by a number of accounts over the last three months, is now being rolled out nationwide. HarperTools provides updates on hot title launches and publicity; a database of information (including jacket images) on all HarperCollins titles, downloadable for promotional use; a sort function to retrieve titles by category, format, author or publication date; and a broad range of account-specific order status and tracking information. In addition, by May, the most recent HarperCollins catalogs will be viewable on the site.

The Board of Directors of EarthWeb Inc. has named Peter A. Derow as President and CEO of EarthWeb Inc., succeeding Jack D. Hidary, a Co-founder and President/CEO who has resigned to become Chairman. Derow has served as a Director of EarthWeb Inc. since 1999. Murray Hidary, Co-founder and Executive Vice President, has also resigned his position to become a Consulting Advisor to several ventures he is currently supporting. He will continue to serve as a Director of the Company.

Ann Marie Lipinski, vice president and executive editor of the Chicago Tribune, has been named senior vice president and editor, announced Scott Smith, president and publisher. Lipinski becomes the Chicago Tribune's 20th editor, succeeding Howard Tyner, who has moved full time to his position as vice president/editorial of Tribune Publishing. Tyner served as the Chicago Tribune's editor since 1993. He recently was named 2000 Editor of the Year by the National Press Foundation.

The New York Times announced that it will raise the price for home delivery of the newspaper effective February 5. Seven-day home delivery in the greater New York metropolitan region will increase to $8.00 from $7.20. In the Northeast it will increase to $9.55 from $8.50. The National edition will increase to $10.25 from $9.50. The new rates will become effective at the end of the subscriber's current billing period. All current special promotion prices will remain in effect. There will be no change in the suggested price of newsstand copies.

OpenMind Publishing Group, a collaborative publishing service for the academic community, announced that it has secured just over $2 million in its first round of funding. Investors included Charlotte Angel Partners (CAP), Research Triangle Ventures, First Flight Venture Fund and The Atlantis Group. Geared at the higher education marketplace, OpenMind's mission is to replace traditional textbook publishing with a collaborative, customized process. Over 4,000 professors worldwide have already signed on to participate in OpenMind's programs.

O'Reilly Network has launched ONLamp.com, a website promoting the integrated use of several high-performance open source technologies used for web development. LAMP is an acronym describing a suite of powerful web development tools: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP, Perl, or Python. ONLamp.com will provide articles and resources related to website performance, development, security, Linux/BSD system administration, Apache installation, Linux multimedia, and MySQL data management.

Softbank Finance Group, AOL Time Warner Ventures, Maveron, and Mayfield Fund have invested a total of $30 million in a second round of financing for The Motley Fool, Inc., the Alexandria, VA-based multimedia personal finance company announced.

Yahoo! and the launch of Yahoo! Groups, a free communications service for people to build relationships, stay in touch, share ideas, and discuss interests through email and Web-based tools. Yahoo! Groups also provides the ability to share photos and files, plan events, and send newsletters.

Salon.com, an Internet media company, announced the launch of Salon.com Radio, a weekly radio show premiering March 1, 2001. The show will be distributed by Public Radio International (PRI), and carried by more than 100 PRI affiliate stations across the country.
