Belo Launches English-Language Newspaper in Mexico

Posted on February 9, 2001

Belo launched its first international publication in Mexico on January 8, 2001. The Dallas Morning News Express, an English-language newspaper targeted to business travelers, diplomats and tourists with limited time schedules, publishes daily stories selected from The Dallas Morning News, The Providence Journal, The Press-Enterprise and traditional newswires in a condensed, eight-page, four-color format. Published Monday through Friday, Express is printed and distributed through partnerships that have been established with three Mexican newspapers -- El Economista in Mexico City, Noticias in the southern city of Oaxaca, and Vanguardia in Saltillo-Monterrey.

Editorial content in Express comprises U. S. and international news, business, sports and lifestyle stories. Mexico's local and regional news are also included through Belo's partnerships with the Mexican newspapers, which also sell Express advertising.

Michael J. Zamba, Belo's director of international development said, ``Belo is the first U. S. media company to establish these types of partnerships for an English-language publication. The unique relationships provide relevant, concise and current information from trusted U. S. and local Mexican newspapers. Additionally, we are able to offer advertisers a national and/or regional style of advertising to reach the English-speaking audience in Mexico.''

Belo has a concentration of assets in the Southwest and has launched a number of new business initiatives targeted to the Hispanic communities in which it operates. Some of the Company's initiatives include Mas! Arizona, a 24-hour Spanish-language cable news channel, in Phoenix, Arizona in conjunction with Cox Cable; La Fuente and La Prensa, two weekly Spanish-language publications in Dallas, Texas and Riverside, California; and two online sports newsletters in Spanish -- Dentro de los Dallas Cowboys and Dentro de la NFL. Belo has also increased its coverage of Mexico and Latin America through the establishment of The Dallas Morning News Cuban news bureau in Havana.
