New York Times Syndicate Selects ScreamingMedia For Content Delivery

Posted on February 9, 2001

The New York Times Syndicate has signed an agreement with ScreamingMedia Inc., a provider of content solutions, to use ScreamingMedia's technology platform to deliver their content. The platform will enable the New York Times Syndicate to aggregate content from its providers, then deliver this content into its subscribers' web and wireless platforms.

``We have listened to our clients and potential clients, and ScreamingMedia's technology will help us meet their needs,'' stated Gloria Brown Anderson, president and editor in chief of The New York Times Syndication Sales Corporation. ``Providing quality journalism is our core business. Now we can expand as far as our imagination, and that of our clients, will allow. As we grow our current client base, it is important that we are able to deliver our content in any format, in any language and to any digital platform. ScreamingMedia enables us to do this without making a major investment in technology.''

Under the terms of the agreement, ScreamingMedia's Content Engine, a server-side platform for the aggregation and processing of content, will aggregate the Syndicate's feeds, and then filter, process and categorize them. This content can then be delivered and integrated, via SiteWare, ScreamingMedia's client-side technology, into the various platforms of the Syndicate subscribers, which include small and larger newspapers; digital-only publishers; and potential radio and cable station customers.

The New York Times Syndicate distributes more than 70 special features, from The New York Times and other premier sources, to 2,000 clients in 80 countries. Syndicate columnists include Esther Dyson, Mikhail Gorbachev, Salman Rushdie and Martha Stewart. Other Syndicate contributors include The Economist, Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business School Publishing, Hearst Magazines, The New York Times Crossword and Michelin. The Syndicate is part of The New York Times Syndication Sales Corporation, with offices in New York City; Kansas City; Reno, Nev.; and Paris. Syndication Sales also operates The New York Times News Service, which transmits hundreds of stories from The Times and 13 partner news organizations daily to more than 650 clients in 50 countries.
