Under the terms of the agreement, MSNBC.com is supplying BET.com with a daily feed of news headlines. BET.com is providing feature content to MSNBC.com, which will be incorporated into various sections of the site including its Race in America feature. CNNfn reported that CNBC.com laid off 26 of its 100 employees. The site will also lay off some part-time and freelance employees. CNBC, the television unit, let go about 20 employees. The New York Times announced the renaming and redesign of TimesFax, which is produced for hotels and resorts, cruise ships, corporations and United States Navy ships and land bases. The service, which has been renamed TimesDigest, features news, weather and features from the The New York Times. TimesFax was started in 1990 and sold exclusively to corporations and American expatriates in Japan. In the fall of 1990, the marketing of TimesFax to hotels and resorts began when the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo became a TimesFax client. TimesFax was distributed for the first time in late 1990 to U.S. military units, specifically to troops serving in Operation Desert Storm. After the Gulf War, TimesFax expanded distribution to include the United States Navy, providing news to ships at sea. Starting in 1991, the market for TimesFax was expanded to include hotels outside of Japan, followed soon by cruise ships. Currently, more than 300 hotels and 80 cruise ships are among the 600 clients worldwide that receive TimesDigest throughout the year. The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), and Creative Planet, Inc. announced that they are launching a combined website featuring editorial content, tools and resources for professional filmmakers and students. The new website was unveiled by ASC President Victor J. Kemper and Creative Planet Chairman and CEO Allen DeBevoise. Powell's Books, an independent bookstore, and Lightning Source, a provider of digital fulfillment services, announced a partnership that will expand Powell's online selection of ebook titles. Under the agreement, Lightning Source will increase Powells.com's existing inventory of electronic books by offering an extensive library of titles from a number of publishers, including Hotlzbrinck, Penguin Putnam, and Simon & Schuster. These titles will be available in Adobe PDF Merchant, Glassbook Reader, and Microsoft Reader formats. The National Association of Women Writers has launched a website. The URL is http://www.naww.org. The website provides a free weekly e-magazine, a member portfolio, information for writers, a link section and other features. CNet reported that Etown.com, which provided consumer electronics news and reviews, has shut down and laid off its entire staff of 100 people. 101communications, a privately held IT media and information company, announced that it has acquired E-Gov Conferences from IT Direct Inc. based in Reston, Va. E-Gov produces several major events yearly including E-Gov 2001, and five focused conferences on E-Procurement, Web-Enabled Government, Knowledge Management, Information Assurance and E-Learning. It also publishes the E-Gov Journal six times per year. The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. and CBS News announced an agreement to collaborate on news stories that will appear as articles in Reader's Digest magazine and as segments on the CBS News magazine 48 Hours. The agreement specifies an ongoing working relationship to develop, publish and broadcast a minimum of four original reports for 2001. 48 Hours and Reader's Digest will share some resources and assist each other in investigating topics of high interest to both audiences. Network World, Inc. (NWI) announced the promotion of John Gallant to President/Editorial Director reporting to Evilee Thibeault, the company's CEO and Publisher. Gallant joined International Data Group (IDG), parent company of Network World, Inc., in 1983 as a staff writer for Computerworld. Gallant helped launch Network World in 1986 as its Managing Editor and in 1988 was promoted to Editor-in-Chief. In 1991, he was promoted to Vice President, Editorial and in 1999 was promoted to Sr. Vice President/Editorial Director. CenterSpan Communications, a developer of peer-to-peer Internet communication and collaboration solutions, announced the formation of the CenterSpan Digital Media and Entertainment Group to lead the company's digital media and entertainment initiative. Howard Weitzman and Michael Kassan have teamed up with CenterSpan to create the new business unit in Los Angeles. Howard L. Weitzman was most recently Chief Executive Officer of Massive Media Group, Inc., a developer of digital rights management (DRM) enabled applications and services for the entertainment and advertising markets. Michael E. Kassan, an attorney, was most recently President, Media/e-Commerce, for Massive Media Group, Inc.. Richard Kirkland was named Managing Editor of Fortune, succeeding John Huey, who becomes Editor of Fortune. Both promotions, announced by Norman Pearlstine, Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief, are effective immediately. Kirkland's promotion comes as Huey joins his partner, Jack Haire, President of The Fortune Group, in restructuring the business and personal finance magazines at Time Inc. Huey, who had been at Fortune 7 years before becoming managing editor in February 1995, assumes the new title of Editor of Fortune, with the top editors of all business and personal finance magazines at Time Inc. - including Fortune, FSB: Fortune Small Business, eCompany Now, Money, and Mutual Funds - reporting to him. On the business side, publishers and presidents of the business and personal finance magazines will report to Haire. Huey and Haire will continue to report to Norman Pearlstine and to Don Logan, respectively, and all titles will continue to operate as independent entities. Dow Jones Newswires announced the launch of a weekly newsletter, Dow Jones Bandwidth Intelligence Alert, which will examine issues and trading activity within the broadband market. The newsletter will cover companies and trends, and provide traders, consultants, legal advisors and investors with information on pending deals and developments. Each issue of the Dow Jones Bandwidth Intelligence Alert will include a column written by Houston Bureau Chief, Michael Rieke, a weekly bandwidth price table and in-depth analysis of the previous week's deals in the Bandwidth Market feature. Patrick J. Purcell, president of Herald Media, Inc., owner of the Boston Herald and Community Newspaper Company (CNC), announced the purchase of Suburban World Newspapers from independent owner William Barrett. Suburban World Newspapers consists of seven papers in eight contiguous communities: The Needham Times, The Natick Bulletin, The Dover-Sherborn Press, The Medfield Press, The Westwood Press, The Millis Press and The Norfolk Press. The group's combined circulation is over 26,000. Alibris, a supplier of hard-to-find books, announced that it has acquired the assets of classicforum.com, a European online seller of rare, antiquarian, and second-hand books, with offices in the UK, Germany and France. Business media company MarketingSherpa.com has launched ConsumerMarketingBiz, its sixth vertical publication for marketers and advertisers. Weekly issues also include interviews with leading marketers in the field, and advice on tactics, media and metrics. adam.com, Inc., a creator and syndicator of health information for the e-health and elearning markets, announced an exclusive multi-year agreement with Medical House Publishing Ltd. that will expand adam's distribution network to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Medical House Publishing, a source of medical content, software and other health-related products, will resell adam's visual health content to healthcare providers, health organizations and other medical-related companies. Medical House Publishing also will localize adam's health content to provide cultural relevance to the UK and Irish communities. Open eBook Forum (OeBF), an international electronic book trade association, has announced the additions of Ed McCoyd and Tom Diaz to its Board of Directors. Elected to their positions through a vote of the principal membership, Mr. McCoyd, Director of Digital Policy at the Association of American Publishers (AAP), has acquired an at-large seat on the OeBF board, and Mr. Diaz, Senior Engineering Manager, eBook Development Group with Adobe Systems Incorporated, is the OeBF's new Treasurer. OverDrive Inc., a provider of electronic publishing tools and services, has launched ebookexpress.com, a website that offers free ebook authoring online in Microsoft Reader format. TheStreet.com, Inc., a Web-based provider of financial news, announced the appointment of James Lonergan to the position of Chief Operating Officer effective immediately. Mr. Lonergan joins TheStreet.com, Inc. following his tenure as Chief Operating Officer at Worldly Information Network, the producer of worldlyinvestor.com. Lonergan will report to Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Clarke. As COO, his responsibilities include driving the Company's business strategy and managing internal operations.
