Hungry Minds and HowStuffWorks Announce Book Series

Hungry Minds, Inc., a how-to publisher (formerly IDG Books Worldwide), and HowStuffWorks, Inc., an online how-to website, have announced a publishing agreement. Together, the companies will create a new book series that expands on the website's content and brings it to a print audience. The announcement was made by John Kilcullen, chairman and CEO of Hungry Minds, and Marshall Brain, founder and CEO of HowStuffWorks.

Hungry Minds and HowStuffWorks will co-create a series of books that extends the website's mission of delivering straightforward information about the magic behind everyday items. Hungry Minds has exclusive rights to publish, sell and distribute the books throughout the world and in all languages, in both hardcover and paperback forms. Howstuffworks.com, which registers over 2.5-million unique visitors per month, will promote the new titles online and cross-promote with hungryminds.com.

``The `How Stuff Works' brand is a proven winner with incredible consumer appeal and a rapidly growing user base,'' said Kilcullen. ``It ties in perfectly with Hungry Minds' ongoing objective to provide our insatiably curious readers with stimulating, practical information they can access in a user-friendly format.''

The first two books under the new partnership, HowStuffWorks and How Much Does the Earth Weigh?, are scheduled for release in September 2001. HowStuffWorks ($24.99/320 pages) is a hardcover desk-reference composed of articles paired with four-color illustrations. The book examines more than 130 relevant topics--from DVDs to caffeine to submarines. How Much Does the Earth Weigh? ($12.99/192 pages) is a compilation of the most compelling questions from the ``Question of the Day'' segment of HowStuffWorks.com.
