Publishing Industry Soundbytes

· CMJ Network, a music media company, announced that management has purchased a majority interest in the company from its previous corporate parent, the Rare Medium Group Inc. Under the terms of the transaction, members of the current management team, led by Robert K. ``Bobby'' Haber, CMJ Founder and Chairman, and Paul Mladineo, Executive Vice President, will assume financial and operating control of the company. Rare Medium Group will retain a minority interest in the company.

The senior management team will consist of Paul Mladineo, Executive VP, who will head product operations, financial and strategic planning; Scott Frampton, VP of Content and Editor of CMJ New Music Monthly, who will continue to lead content development and strategy; and Paul Barretta, Chief Financial Officer, who will oversee financial operations.

· Beginning the week of April 20, and corresponding with the launch of Sports Illustrated's SI Adventure, a new selective editorial section of the magazine, CNNSI.com will unveil three new sports channels on its home page -- Extreme Sports, Outdoor Sports and Winter Sports. Time4 Media, the publisher of leisure-time magazines such as Golf Magazine, Field & Stream, Ski Magazine and TransWorld Skateboarding, will provide links and content to CNNSI.com, the sports site for CNN/Sports Illustrated.

· MediaBay and Digital Goods announced a co-marketing agreement that will push Digital Goods into the spoken audio market and will introduce ebooks and other digital text to MediaBay's product mix. Under the agreement, MediaBay, a seller of spoken audio and nostalgia products, will feature its own branded store for ebooks and other text-based digital content, hosted by Digital Goods, on its website. Digital Goods, a digital content marketing provider, will feature its own branded store for audio books, magazines and classic radio shows, hosted by MediaBay, on its website.

· Achieve Communications, Inc. has launched Inside Education, a new education magazine which offers solutions in the areas of technology, finance, staffing, curriculum, policies and management. Premier issues of the magazine shipped on April 10, 2001, to school superintendents and their deputies, business managers, district technology coordinators, curriculum directors and other key education decision-makers. The publication features editorial by leading industry professionals. Columns and articles focus on the key issues for school superintendents and directors, and topics include technology, infrastructure, building management, curriculum, staff development and financial management. Inside Education is published bi-monthly and is slated to become a monthly publication by the end of this year.

· Technology Media, a division of Penton Media, Inc., announced that Kim Paulsen has become the publisher of the Windows 2000 Magazine Network. Paulsen brings 17 years of publishing experience to the position and has extensive experience in the business and sales management sides of the magazine industry. Paulsen most recently served as President of Healthwell.com, a B-to-B portal for the natural products industry, that is produced by Penton's New Hope Natural Media operation in Boulder, Colorado.

· MightyWords, a digital content provider, has made some its titles available on Amazon.com. MightyWords intends to have its complete catalog of more than 5,000 titles available at Amazon.com this quarter. MightyWords also announced a partnership with Lightning Source Inc., a subsidiary of Ingram Industries Inc., which delivers content as ebooks or ``on demand'' in printed form. Lightning Source, will digitally deliver MightyWords' printable titles in the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader format to Amazon.com customers.

· iNEXTV Corporation, a premier producer, aggregator and syndicator of video for the Internet and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ampex Corporation, announced it has signed a content syndication agreement with Yahoo! Inc. to distribute iNEXTV's streaming video programming on Yahoo! Broadcast.

· Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a provider of handheld ebook reading devices, announced the appointment of Elizabeth Mackey as Vice President of Content. Mackey will focus on several objectives including the acquisition of electronic rights to popular books and periodicals, partnering with other content aggregators, resellers and distributors, developing sales promotions and other programs to support the sale of content to eBookMan users and various other programs to support publisher and author relations.

· InformationWeek, an IT media brand, in partnership with META Group Inc., an IT research and consulting firm, announced their partnership to sell reports on InformationWeek's IT Research Hub, an ecommerce site for third-party research reports examining issues and trends ranging from IT spending shifts to ebusiness application development.

· Ziff Davis Media Game Group, has named new editors-in-chief for two of its publications. Dan Hsu will now oversee Electronic Gaming Monthly, while Jeff Green will step up to the lead editorial position for Computer Gaming World. Dan ``Shoe'' Hsu began with Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine in 1996 as an associate reviews editor and worked his way up to the dual responsibility of lead editor for EGM's monthly ``Previews'' section and editor-in-chief of the Game Group's annual Video Game Buyer's Guide. After a brief stint away from EGM as editor-in-chief of Gamers.com, Hsu is returning to the gaming magazine as its editor-in-chief. John Davison, editor-in-chief of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine had been temporarily overseeing the editorial operations of Electronic Gaming Monthly as acting editor-in-chief. Davison will now return full time to the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine.

Computer Gaming World's new editor-in-chief, Jeff Green is a Ziff Davis veteran. For his first five years at Ziff Davis, he held editorial positions at Ziff-Davis Press and MacWEEK magazine. Green has been with CGW for the last five years. Most recently, he was the magazine's executive editor, working with former editor-in-chief, George Jones. Jones has left CGW to spearhead the Game Group's Internet initiative as editor-in-chief.

· InfoWorld, a weekly enterprise technology magazine, announced that Chad Dickerson has joined the organization as chief technology officer. As CTO, Dickerson will oversee and manage all aspects of technology, including infrastructure, networking, software development, site production, and desktop support, as well as contribute a monthly column to the magazine. Prior to InfoWorld, Dickerson served as CTO of Salon.com.

· Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine, a construction industry business weekly published by Construction Information Group, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, announced that Janice Lyn Tuchman has been promoted to editor-in-chief. Tuchman replaces Howard B. Stussman, who is retiring his daily duties after working at ENR for 33-years. He will assume the position of editor emeritus. Tuchman succeeds Mr. Stussman and Arthur J. Fox Jr., who is also editor emeritus and has remained active in the industry since he retired at the end of 1988. Tuchman most recently served as ENR's executive editor.

· gfn.com, the Gay Financial Network, a provider of financial news information and services to the gay and lesbian community, announced the publication of the company's annual list of the 25 most powerful and influential gay and lesbian executives and the 50 most powerful Fortune 500-ranked, gay-friendly publicly traded companies. Walter B. Schubert, Founder and CEO of gfn.com, the Gay Financial Network, made the announcement.

· adam.com, Inc., a creator and syndicator of health information, reported a new alliance with Bell & Howell's Information and Learning unit that will provide adam's online health information to libraries throughout the U.S. via Bell & Howell's ProQuest online information service.

· Bloomberg Press has signed an exclusive agreement with The New Yorker to publish six cartoon books starting this October. The books will concentrate on mainstream subjects including kids and sports. The new series follows Bloomberg's publication of four previous cartoon titles with The New Yorker focusing on business, money, politics, and -- more recently -- technology according to Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker. Mankoff is president and founder of The Cartoon Bank, which is the repository of The New Yorker's cartoon archive.

· The NewDigitalReporter.com, a cyber zine covering converging technologies, is publishing digital photo reports directly from the show floor of The National Association of Broadcasters Annual Convention (April 22-26). It is a worldwide gathering of television and radio broadcasters and professionals from telecommunications, multimedia, film and the Internet. Online publications and individuals can freely access and use any aspect of the up-to-the-minute articles, providing copyright credit is given with a link to http://www.newdigitalreporter.com.

· The Topps Company, Inc., a manufacturer of collectible sports and entertainment trading cards has agreed to invest $1.6 million in thePit.com, an online ``stock market'' for sports trading cards. The Topps investment is contingent upon thePit.com raising additional equity capital. In exchange for the investment, thePit.com will also provide exclusive promotional and other consideration to Topps. In addition, a ``Topps Emerging Card Index'' will be added to thePit.com's website and will feature the cards of the most promising future stars from the four major sports.

· Chris-Craft Industries, Inc., announced its stockholders had approved and adopted the Merger Agreement between the Chris-Craft, The News Corporation Limited, News Publishing Australia Limited and Fox Television Holdings, Inc. The merger remains subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission, where the transaction is currently under review.

· Robert Blacher has been named Vice President/Group Sales Manager of the Meredith Broadcasting Group. Most recently Blacher was the General Sales Manager at Meredith-owned KPHO-TV in Phoenix. Blacher will report to Meredith Broadcasting Group President Cary D. Jones and will oversee all of the group's sales functions. His main responsibilities will include working with the sales management of each of Meredith's 12 stations to maximize revenues. He will also work closely with Jones and station general managers to plan and implement sales and marketing programs. Blacher assumes his new duties on April 30.

· Sirsi Corporation announced that it has appointed Laura N. Dawson as content development director for the iBistro Electronic Library. Reporting to Patrick Sommers, Sirsi president, Dawson will develop partnerships with electronic content suppliers to provide personalized content for the iBistro e-Library.

· Versaly Games, Inc., a privately owned Seattle-based publisher and distributor of interactive games and entertaining content to mobile phones, announced it has partnered with New Jersey-based Fictionwise.com, an independent ebook seller, to allow Versaly subscribers to download short fiction ebooks to their mobile phones. Versaly has become an Affiliate Partner of Fictionwise and paid subscribers will have access to the Fictionwise library of ebooks from the Versaly website and next generation mobile phones, including the ``Stinger'' smartphone from Microsoft. Fictionwise currently offers ebooks by top authors such as Robert Silverberg, Larry Niven, Harlan Ellison, and Mike Resnick.

· Simon & Schuster Interactive announced the Company will be publishing entertainment titles for the Xbox video game system. The first title Outlaw Golf is scheduled to ship in early 2002. It will be followed by an action / adventure game which will be announced soon.

· Knexa.com Enterprises Inc., and Dr. Yuwei Shi, President of Peerview of Cupertino, California, report that the parties have entered into an agreement to share their respective technologies to create and expand after-markets for scholarly publications. Peerview has developed web-based technology that manages the social recommendation and commentary processes and generates reputation capital for scholarly works. Knexa's dynamically priced knowledge exchange technology provides a platform for the publication and sale of academic content. Knexa and Peerview will combine their technology to build an online academic content market primarily for non-academics and academics interested in research fields in which they are not specialized.

· Loudeye Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of services and infrastructure for the authorized delivery of digital content, announced the appointment of Steve Plinio to vice president, strategic alliances, and John H. Shaw to vice president, corporate communications.

· XanEdu, a division of Bell and Howell Information and Learning, announced the acquisition of the collegiate copyright and print CoursePack service, Campus Custom Publishing (CCP). CCP's established history in copyright-compliant print packs provides XanEdu a solution to copyright compliance, with both online and in print course materials for higher education institutions.

· eHarlequin.com, a publisher of romance fiction, announced it has created Learn to Write, a channel on its website with writing tips and tools ranging from how to write series romance, to tips on unleashing creativity. The site also features a romance manuscript-critiquing service, where eHarlequin.com's team of romance experts will assess a story and offer editorial advice to the writer.

· Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) has entered into an output deal with DreamWorks SKG that will give the Turner entertainment networks, led by Turner Network Television (TNT), TBS Superstation and Cartoon Network, access to up to 60 of the studio's titles in the broadcast network window. These titles will be available to the Turner networks immediately following their license to a broadcast network. The announcement, combined with a previously announced syndication window agreement between the two companies, now gives the TBS, Inc. networks access to nearly every DreamWorks title, starting with titles released theatrically between 1997 and 2007. The deal provides TBS, Inc. TV rights to DreamWorks titles as far out as 2015.

· Christianity.com has announced a three-year strategic partnership with Crosswalk.com, Inc., a Christian portal. Christianity.com will provide the network infrastructure and Web content management technology for Crosswalk.com, which will lead to a complete site redesign, launching in late June. Crosswalk.com will provide daily content to the Christianity.com network and share Web content tools such as bible study tools, chat & forums, devotionals, email newsletters, music events, free ecards, and directories to the Christianity.com network. Both companies will work together through future joint promotions including advertising, co-sponsorships, and co-branding events.

· Media Partners Asia Limited (MPA) announced its incorporation as a company providing coverage of the media and communications industries in Asia. MPA will launch a biweekly publication in April, followed by a quarterly journal and annual industry reports. The company will also offer consulting services and organize conferences to meet the strategic goals of global business communities. Vivek Couto and Rupert Wilkinson are the founders of MPA and will lead its operations from Hong Kong.

· WAP.com, a web and WAP site dedicated to guiding users of mobile Internet sites and terminals, has announced an agreement with Yahoo! UK & Ireland, the Internet communications, commerce and media company, to integrate news from WAP.com into Yahoo! UK & Ireland sites. WAP.com, owned and operated by the Norwegian company WAPfactory.net AS, specializes in providing news, reviews and guidance covering the wireless market from WAP via SMS to i-mode.
