ONA Announces Second Annual Online Journalism Awards

Posted on April 27, 2001

The Online Journalism Awards (OJA) program, international Web journalism awards presented by the Online News Association (ONA) and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, is seeking entries for its 2001 contest. The contest is open to English-language content sites from around the world for work first published online between July 1, 2000 and June 30, 2001. The deadline to submit entries is Monday, July 16, 2001.

The contest follows the inaugural contest in 2000 in which the OJA prizes were awarded to recognize and encourage outstanding journalism being produced on the Web. The 2001 Online Journalism Awards will grant 15 prizes in eight categories: General Excellence, Breaking News, Enterprise Journalism Service Journalism, Feature Journalism, Creative Use of the Medium, Innovative Presentation of Information, and Commentary. Feature Journalism and Innovative Presentation of Information are new categories this year.

Two prizes will be awarded in most categories: Independent, for work produced by organizations that are not affiliated with entities in other media; and Affiliated, for work produced by organizations owned by or partnered with other media such as television, newspapers, magazines and radio.

``By recognizing and honoring the best in online journalism, we can both spread the word about the excellent work being done in this medium, and inspire ourselves as journalists to reach even higher,'' said Rich Jaroslovsky, ONA president and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Online.

A two-step process will determine the winners. First, screeners in each category will nominate five proposed finalists. Then, the entries will be submitted to judges, a select group of leading journalists who will meet in New York to choose the official finalists and winners for each category. Finalists will be announced on Monday, October 1, 2001. Winners will be announced at a gala luncheon at the second national conference of the Online News Association, which this year will be held at the University of California at Berkeley on Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27.
