National Magazine Award Winners Announced
The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has announced
the winners of this years National Magazine Awards.
The 2001 National Magazine Awards, an editorial honor in the
magazine industry, were presented at a gala event at The
Waldorf-Astoria before 1,200 editors, publishers and their guests.
The New Yorker received 11 nominations and won five awards;
Esquire received eight nominations and won one award; Rolling Stone
received four nominations and won one award; The American Scholar
and Nest received three nominations and won
one award each. National Geographic Adventure received two
nominations and won one award.
Each winner was presented with
an "Ellie," a reproduction of Alexander Calder's stabile,
"Elephant," which is ASME's symbol of the award.
The awards are presented to print magazines that consistently
demonstrate superior performance in carrying out stated editorial
objectives, innovative editorial techniques, noteworthy journalistic
enterprise, and imagination and vigor in layout and design. The
online awards recognize Internet sites that reflect an outstanding
level of interactivity, journalistic integrity and service.

- Teen People for General Excellence (over 1,000,000 circulation)
- The New Yorker for General Excellence (400,000 to 1,000,000 circulation)
- Mother Jones for General Excellence (100,000 to 400,000 circulation)
- The American Scholar for General Excellence (under 100,000 circulation)
- National Geographic Adventure for Personal Service
- The New Yorker for Special Interests
- Esquire for Reporting
- Rolling Stone for Feature Writing
- The New Yorker for Profiles
- Time for Public Interest
- Nest for Design
- National Geographic for Photography
- Zoetrope: All-Story for Fiction
- The New Yorker for Essays
- The New Yorker for Reviews and Criticism
- U.S. News Online for General Excellence Online
- SmartMoney.com for Best Interactive Design
This year's program attracted a record 1,586 print and new media
entries. The 86 finalists were chosen by a screening panel
composed of 170 editors, art directors, educators and new media
experts. The 17 winners were chosen by a separate panel of 80
judges.
Over the years, a number of 2001 award recipients have received
multiple awards. The New Yorker has received 31 awards; Esquire
has received 11 awards; National Geographic has received ten
awards; Rolling Stone has received nine awards; Time has received
six awards; Mother Jones has received four awards; and The American
Scholar and Nest have received two awards each.
The National Magazine Awards were established in 1966.
The awards program is sponsored by ASME in association
with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
