Publishing Industry Soundbytes

· Classwell Learning Group announced partnerships with TIME for Kids, Thinkronize and MATTI Associates, which bring new interactive content to be integrated into the Classwell service. TIME for Kids, the classroom publication of Time magazine, offers teachers and students news from around the world. Thinkronize develops technologies that deliver academic research, communication tools and content. The MATTI Associates tutorial collection is part of a National Science Foundation and Utah State University project to develop a Web-based National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for learning mathematics. Classwell, a strategic partner of Houghton Mifflin and Sylvan Ventures, integrates assessment, instruction and professional development and is aligned with state and local standards.

· Ziff Davis Media Game Group's Electronic Gaming Monthly is boosting its rate base to 500,000 starting with the September 2001 issue. Circulation for the video gamers magazine has been at 425,000 since July 2000.

· InfoWorld Media Group, an independent business unit of IDG, announced the relaunch of InfoWorld, a weekly magazine that provides analysis of enterprise technology and strategies. InfoWorld Media Group has unveiled a new design and deeper content for both the print and online versions of InfoWorld. The premiere issue, May 14, features analysis of primary research conducted by InfoWorld Media Group in which 200 C-level executive InfoWorld readers responded to a series of questions on the value of IT. According to the study, more than half of the respondents plan to increase their technology budgets by an average of 27 percent in the next year.

· Guru, Inc., a resource for independent professionals, announced that Ray Marcy has joined Guru as Chairman & CEO. Jon and James Slavet, Guru's founding co-CEOs, will continue to play active leadership roles at the company reporting to Marcy. Prior to joining Guru, Marcy spent 11 years building Spherion Corporation. Prior to Spherion, Marcy served in senior executive positions at Manpower and Adecco.

· ISD Magazine, a technical resource for semiconductor technology designers, announced editorial management promotions as part of a broad-based restructuring of the publication. Leading off the changes, Ron Wilson will serve as editorial director. Wilson has held senior editorial positions with EE Times and Computer Design Magazine. Nicolas Mokhoff has been named editor and will focus on day-to-day management of the publication's content. Under the restructuring, ISD veteran Anne Marie St. John-Brooks will lead the sales effort, reporting to Pete Waddell who was recently named publishing director of ISD.

· Beginning May 13, New York Times Dining In/Dining Out Reporter Amanda Hesser will share her experiences and adventures with food in ``Food Diary: Confessions of a Woman Who Loves Food Too Much,'' a new column in The New York Times Magazine. ``Food Diary'' will alternate with Jonathan Reynolds's ``Food'' column and together replace freelancer Molly O'Neill's food coverage. Hesser is a trained cook, cookbook author and food reporter while Reynolds, a playwright and screenwriter, boasts no food credentials apart from loving to eat.

· iVillage.com, a network for women online, and YM, a sourcebook for teens, announced the launch of a six-month online and in-book initiative called ``Take Your Mom Online: Moms and Teens Connect.'' Editorial teams from both iVillage and YM have culled resources and experts to create a specially designed website. At the heart of ``Take Your Mom Online: Moms and Teens Connect'' is a monthly series called ``Together Time Workshops.'' Through a combination of articles, quizzes, tools, contests, and message boards, moms and teens can ask one another questions, speak freely, and share similar experiences, insecurities and hopes on topics such as body image, self-esteem, love and sex, drugs and alcohol, health and wellness, back to school and school safety.

· Rodale, a healthy lifestyle publisher, announced that Marc E. Jaffe has been named senior vice president and managing director of Rodale General Books and Licensing. Steve Murphy, Rodale's president and chief operating officer, made the announcement. Jaffe will begin his assignment immediately and will report to Murphy. In his new role, Jaffe will be responsible for Rodale's direct-mail and trade books that do not fall within Rodale's Men's Health, Organic Living, Sports & Fitness, or Women's Health Groups. He will also continue to oversee new licensing efforts. Rodale also announced that Camille Johnston has been named vice president of corporate communications. Johnston, former White House director of communications for Tipper Gore, began her assignment on May 7. She will report to Murphy and will be based in Rodale's New York office.

· Gene Pritchard, President, FCW Government Technology Group, announced that beginning with the September issue, civic.com magazine would become Government E-Business, a magazine for state and local e-government leaders. This change reflects a sharper editorial focus on the most dynamic area in the public sector today - electronic government. Along with the publication, a companion website will also launch in September, offering daily news coverage to the state and local e-government market. FCW Government Technology Group is part of 101communications, a media company focused exclusively on the information technology market, headquartered in Chatsworth, California.

· The Dr. Spock Company, a parenting media company, announced a content and book marketing partnership with Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. The partnership continues a 58-year relationship between the book publisher and the pediatrician, whose work now resides with The Dr. Spock Company. Three titles will be available in August 2001, and the company will receive revenue from the book sales. Dr. Spock's The First Two Years and Dr. Spock's The School Years are two new titles compiling articles about children ranging from newborns to older children. Written by Dr. Spock between 1985 and 1997, the articles first appeared in Parenting and Redbook magazine. Dr. Martin T. Stein, one of The Dr. Spock Company's experts, has updated the articles with recent health and child-care information. In addition, Dr. Spock on Parenting will be republished for the first time since 1989. It addresses the new challenges parents face in the 21st century, including raising ``superkids,'' sexuality, and single-parent homes. The three books will all be published in trade paperback.

· Hungry Minds, Inc., a how-to knowledge company (formerly IDG Books Worldwide), announced the appointment of Timothy J. McNeill to its Board of Directors. Timothy McNeill is Hungry Minds current President, CEO and Publisher. He has also headed Wisdom Publications, a Boston-area based independent publisher, since 1989. Immediately prior to that, he was Associate Issues Director for the Dukakis US Presidential Campaign in 1987 and 1988.

· Archie Comic Publications, Inc. (``ACP''), a publisher of comic books, including the Archie comic books series from which ACP gets its name, has prevailed in an arbitration proceeding before the World Intellectual Property Organization (``WIPO'') against an individual who had registered three Internet domain names incorporating ACP's ``Josie and the Pussycats'' trademark. ACP has published the Josie and the Pussycats comic book series, featuring an all-girl rock band consisting of ``Josie,'' ``Melody'' and ``Val,'' since 1969. . On May 3, 2001, a WIPO panelist found that the domain names were registered and used in bad faith, applying the now-established principle that ``inaction'' with respect to URLs can constitute bad faith ``use'' under ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (``UDRP''). The three (3) domain names at issue in the proceeding [Case No. D2001-0188] were, ``josieandthepussycats.net,'' ``josieandthepussycats.org,'' and ``josieandthepussycats.ws.''

· Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. and Hungry Minds, Inc. announced an agreement to provide titles from CliffsNotes and Frommer's Travel Series for Franklin's eBookMan reader and multimedia device. Access to the Frommer's Travel Series is $9.95 per destination guide, and includes trip planning, sightseeing advice and reviews of hotels and restaurants. Hungry Minds and Franklin will also make available more than 100 of CliffsNotes classic titles for download to eBookMan for $4.95 each. CliffsNotes and Frommer's Travel Series will be available this summer at Franklin's eBookMan website.

· WRC Media announced that it has completed the acquisition of two companies -- Lindy Enterprises and ChildU, Inc. Lindy Enterprises develops curriculum-based skills assessment and test preparation products that correlate to national and state curriculum. ChildU, Inc. will offer The Learning Odyssey, a K-12 comprehensive educational curriculum delivered online. The company currently has a complete grades 4-6 curriculum offering, and will be rolling out grades 1-3 and grades 7-8 curriculum later this year. The acquisition will create a platform for the delivery of WRC Media's Internet-based products and services.

· Scholastic, and Microsoft Corp., have partnered to launch an original ebook novel for middle grade readers with the release of Remnants, a new series by K.A. Applegate, the author of the Animorphs series. The first title in the series, Remnants #1: The Mayflower Project, will be serialized in five downloads as part of Scholastic's teaser ebook marketing campaign. The ebook will be offered for free exclusively in the Microsoft Reader format beginning May 9th with the final installment available the week of June 25th. Readers will be able to find printed books in stores everywhere on June 15, ten days before the final download. Remnants is a new series that begins with the end of the world as we know it. It's the year 2011, and the planet is about to be destroyed. In a desperate attempt to survive, a handful of people board a revamped space shuttle and go into suspended animation. Adrift in space, their only hope for a new life is the ship's computer system, which is set to wake them, if and when they reach a breathable atmosphere.

· XanEdu, a division of Bell and Howell Company, announced an alliance with Hoover's, Inc., that gives the XanEdu MBA ReSearch Engine users access to company information from Hoover's Online. XanEdu partners with publishers, colleges, and universities to deliver customized course materials both online and print.

· netLibrary, a provider of ebooks and content management services, announced new ebook distribution alliances with BMBC Ltd. (UK), COUTTS Library Services Canada and United States, and BTJ AB. These agreements will increase netLibrary's reach in the European and North American ebook markets.
