· Carey Winfrey, a journalist, editor and Emmy award-winning television producer, will take over as editor-in-chief of Smithsonian magazine, replacing Don Moser, who is retiring after 20 years at the helm. Winfrey, previously a reporter at Time and The New York Times, spent the last four years as an Assistant Managing Editor at People.

· Penton Media, Inc. announced that it has acquired the WirelessDeveloper Conference, an event serving software developers innovating applications for wireless devices and platforms. The sixth-annual staging of the event will take place Aug. 20-25, 2001, at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The event was purchased from WirelessDeveloper.com, Inc., East Lansing, MI. Konny Zsigo, president of WirelessDeveloper.com, will remain involved with conference content development and act as an advisor in Penton's planned launch of WirelessDeveloper magazine.

· Herman Cain, the entrepreneurial corporate executive who built a national leadership consultancy after revitalizing Godfather's Pizza, Inc. in the 1990s, was elected to the Board of Directors of The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. Cain is founder and Chief Executive Officer of T.H.E., Inc., a leadership consulting company specializing in keynote speaking and inspirational books and recordings. He also is Chairman of Godfather's Pizza, where he was President and CEO from 1986 to 1996.

· 1-800-Flowers.com, a multi-channel retailer of gifts, announced the acquisition of The Children's Group from Foster & Gallagher, Inc., a privately held direct marketer of horticulture products. The Children's Group is a multi-channel direct marketer of children's gifts including natural material toys, games, arts and crafts and dolls that had approximately $30 million in revenues during calendar-year 2000. The Children's Group consists of two brands, HearthSong, which specializes in wood and natural material toys, crafts and books with educational, nature and art themes, and Magic Cabin Dolls, which primarily sells exclusive, natural-fiber soft dolls, kits and accessories.

· hillmancurtis, inc., an international leader in cross-media digital design, launched ``60 seconds with ... ,'' a new series of online mini-movies. Appearing on RollingStone.com, the series opens with a personal interview with Stevie Nicks and another with Dave Wyndorf, lead singer of Monster Magnet. Future spots will feature other musicians, filmmakers, actors, and television personalities.

· Topica Inc., a provider of email newsletter hosting and delivery services, has begun to deliver the email for The Industry Standard. Starting earlier this month, The Industry Standard began serving more than one million email subscriptions with newsletters produced through and delivered by the Topica Email Publisher product.

· Forbes.com announced the addition of a new travel area to its Lifestyle channel. Edited by Charles Dubow, the Lifestyle section is intended to help site users enjoy the fruits of their labors. Besides unique content, the section also offers relevant articles from Forbes magazine, Forbes FYI and Forbes Global.

· eUniverse, an interactive entertainment network, has acquired IntelligentX, a leading email publisher. IntelligentX's more than 6.5 million unique subscribers receive daily newsletters with a focus on either technology or entertainment. Through 29 online publications, eUniverse now reaches more than 40 million subscribers via email newsletters. The eUniverse network includes Flowgo, an entertainment website; joke and humor sites Gotlaughs and Funone; community site Just Say Wow; and its email newsletter network.

· F-D-C Reports, Inc., publisher of The Pink Sheet, The Gray Sheet and other news publications covering the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Baltimore charging NewsEdge Corp. and IMS Health, Inc. with violations of F-D-C Reports' copyright and other proprietary rights. The complaint alleges that NewsEdge, a provider of online information services based in Burlington, MA, violated the terms of a distribution agreement with F-D-C Reports and infringed that company's copyright by electronically distributing F-D-C Reports' copyrighted content to unauthorized recipients.

· Danziger has been named Editor-in-Chief of Self, it was announced by James Truman, Editorial Director of Conde Nast Publications, Inc. The appointment is effective Monday, June 11th. Ms. Danziger replaces Cindi Leive, who has become Editor-in-Chief of Glamour. Ms. Danziger returns to Conde Nast from Danziger Media, a consulting company that focused on developing magazine, television, and book-publishing projects. She was the founding editor of Women's Sports & Fitness (originally titled Conde Nast Sports for Women), in 1997, a position she held until the magazine closed last year. In 1994 and 1995, she worked as an editor at The New York Times in the style news department.

· Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. (PNI), publisher of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, announced the creation of Broad Street Community Newspapers (BSCN), a weekly community newspaper group. BSCN is the result of two PNI subsidiaries, ProMedia Inc. of Trevose, PA, and Consumer and Community Publishing (CCP) of Berlin, NJ, joining forces to reach more than 750,000 households each week. Broad Street Community Newspapers will serve southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey with the Northeast Times, the Midweek (Bucks and Montgomery counties, as well as the Main Line in Pennsylvania), and Trend (Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties in New Jersey). Midweek and Trend will share a common masthead, with a new, redesigned logo carrying both names. Distribution of Midweek and Trend is by mail and The Northeast Times by carrier force.

· Paramount Digital Entertainment (PDE) has launched a re-designed ETOnline.com, the official website of Paramount Domestic Television's Entertainment Tonight, it was announced by Leonard J. Washington II, President of PDE. ETOnline.com now offers more entertainment news, with breaking headlines, weekly rankings of films and television shows, interactive polls and a bold new home page.

· Google has launched a Canada specific search engine. The new site features options to search the entire web, to search pages from Canada only, and the ability to quickly customize Google's interface and search language to French.
