Humanitas Prize Finalists Announced

Father Frank Desiderio, C.S.P., President of the Humanitas Prize has announced the finalists for the Humanitas Prize. The prizes and $130,000 are given each year to the writers of those television programs and motion pictures which do the most to communicate human values to their viewers. The winners of this year's prizes will be announced at the annual Humanitas Prize luncheon on June 28, 2001 at the Hilton Universal Hotel. Writer/producer/director Edward Zwick will be the keynote speaker. Father Desiderio, will be carrying on the tradition of the late beloved Father Ellwood ``Bud'' Kieser, C.S.P., who dedicated his life to bringing human values into the world of entertainment.

The Humanitas Prize nominees are:

Feature Film Category ($25,000):
  • Billy Elliot Written by: Lee Hall (Universal Focus)
  • Traffic Screenplay by: Stephen Gaghan (USA Films)
  • You Can Count On Me Written by: Kenneth Lonergan (Paramount Classics)
90 Minute or Longer Cable Category ($25,000):
  • Boycott Screenplay by: Herman Daniel Farrell III and Timothy J. Sexton (HBO)
  • What Makes A Family Written by: Robert L. Freedman (Lifetime)
  • Wit Screenplay by: Emma Thompson and Mike Nichols (HBO)
