Martha Stewart Signs Book Deal with Clarkson Potter

Posted on June 20, 2001

Clarkson Potter/Publishers announced that it has entered into a publishing agreement with Martha Stewart to publish her autobiography. The announcement was made by Chip Gibson, President and Publisher of the Crown Publishing Group and Lauren Shakely, Senior Vice President and Editorial Director of Clarkson Potter. A New York Post article suggests that she may be writing the autobiography, because another book, titled Martha Stewart Inc., is being written by Chris Byron, her Connecticut neighbor. John Wiley & Sons will be publishing Marth Stewart Inc., which is due out in 2002.

Clarkson Potter is an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, and has been the publisher of Stewart's books on cooking, entertaining, and lifestyle for nearly twenty years, ever since the 1982 publication of her first book, Entertaining. The book, tentatively titled Martha: Really and Truly, is scheduled to be published in 2003.

Martha's autobiography will be the story of how a woman created and built an omnipresent omnimedia company, bought it back from Time, Inc., and then took it public on the New York Stock Exchange. It will also be the story of how a woman developed her entrepreneurial instincts, while attempting to balance life with work, family with career, and established traditions with new adventures. Stewart says she intends to acknowledge sacrifices, personal heart-breaks, ``bumps in the road,'' and imperfections in a seemingly perfect world, all discussed completely and honestly.

``I wanted to tell my story now, because I feel the time is right. This is the history of an entrepreneurial age, a history that has not yet been written,'' Stewart says. ``To many onlookers, what I have accomplished may appear easy, but it was all done with hard work, old-fashioned elbow grease, and a certain amount of emotional pain and suffering. Yet there is nothing that I regret in the process, and the lessons learned and the experiences I have gained are worth writing about in detail. I want to show how anyone interested in starting a business, fulfilling a dream, or learning how to build an empire from scratch can do so. I hope this book will be what my first book, Entertaining, was: a textbook, a story book, a how-to book, and a picture book. I consider it the ultimate recipe book for success!''
