CMP Announces Addition of The Perl Journal

Posted on July 6, 2001

Sys Admin, CMP Media LLC's journal for UNIX systems administrators, announced the addition of Readable Publications' The Perl Journal (TPJ). Jon Orwant, President of Readable Publications, launched The Perl Journal in 1996. More recently, the quarterly publication had been part of EarthWeb Inc. Earlier this year, EarthWeb divested itself of all editorial products, and in April 2001 control of TPJ reverted to Readable Publications.

``After EarthWeb suspended publishing TPJ, I looked for a home with an established technical print publisher,'' said Dr. Orwant. ``I was attracted to CMP because they already publish three computer magazines I respect: Dr. Dobb's Journal, C/C++ Users Journal, and Sys Admin.''

Edwin Rothrock, Publisher of Sys Admin magazine, said, ``Jon has built a great publication over the years. When he approached us, the opportunity was clear -- The Perl Journal is a good strategic fit in the Software Development Media Group within CMP. As network hardware becomes more programmable -- at every level -- the disciplines of systems administration, network management, and systems programming are merging. The addition of The Perl Journal supports Sys Admin magazine's expansion into this fast growing area.''

According to Rothrock, The Perl Journal subscribers will begin receiving monthly issues of Sys Admin as well as quarterly supplements of The Perl Journal in the fall of this year. Dr. Orwant will remain on the TPJ team as a Senior Contributing Editor.

CMP Media LLC is a high-tech media company. Its products and services include newspapers, magazines, Internet products, research, direct marketing services, education and training, trade shows and conferences, custom publishing, testing and consulting.

Jon Orwant is President of Readable Publications, Inc. and CTO of O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. He founded The Perl Journal and has authored or co-authored three Perl books, including Mastering Algorithms with Perl and the best-selling Programming Perl, both with O'Reilly.
