Publishing Industry Soundbytes

· The Albuquerque Journal has become one of the first newspapers to charge website visitors for access. The paper plans to begin to start charging August 1st. Nonmembers will only have free access to online classifieds, advertisements and headlines. Full-length stories and other local content will be limited to subscribers of the newspaper and to subscriber-members of the website. The Albuquerque Journal can be found online at ABQJournal.com.

· John Huey was named Editorial Director of Time Inc. by Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstine. Huey, who has been Editor of Fortune, succeeds Walter Isaacson, who was appointed yesterday as Chairman and CEO of the CNN Newsgroup. Huey's appointment is effective immediately. Huey, 53, is a native of Atlanta and graduated from the University of Georgia. He joined Fortune in 1988 and was named managing editor in 1995 by Pearlstine, who had joined Time Inc. earlier that year.

· Al Bredenberg has launched EmailResults.com, a website offering resources to support permission-based email marketing. EmailResults.com features a library of articles for fighting spam and for marketing by email using permission methods. The site includes a directory of opt-in email lists for advertisers, providing links to list rentals, list brokers, email ad networks, and email newsletters that accept advertising. In addition, the site serves as the home for Email Marketing Results, a free newsletter on permission email marketing.

· CNET Networks, Inc., a technology industry resource, announced the completion of its acquisition of TechRepublic from Gartner, Inc. for $23 million in cash and common stock. TechRepublic is an online destination for IT professionals.

· Imagine Media announced that Macintosh-industry veteran Rik Myslewski has been named as the new editor-in-chief of MacAddict magazine. Myslewski was formerly vice president and editorial director of Productopia, creator and executive producer of Macworld Live!, and executive editor of MacUser magazine. Most recently, Myslewski was the vice-president and editorial director of Productopia. Myslewski's editorial career also included eight years as executive editor of MacUser magazine and two years as executive producer of Macworld Live!.

· We Were Soldiers, a Vietnam War drama set against the backdrop of the first major battle between the United States and North Vietnamese forces, wrapped principal photography on locations in Georgia, and California. Written and directed by Randall Wallace, from Lieutenant General Harold G. Moore (Retired) and Joseph L. Galloway's New York Times bestseller We Were Soldiers Once, the film stars Mel Gibson, Madeleine Stowe, Sam Elliott, Greg Kinnear, Chris Klein, Barry Pepper and Keri Russell.

· Primedia Inc., a targeted media company, announced the creation of the Primedia Financial Services Group which will leverage Primedia's existing financial trade publications and develop new offline and online media products. Warren Bimblick, 46, has been promoted to senior vice president and general manager and will lead the Group. Primedia Inc. also announced that James Magrone, 48, will replace Warren Bimblick as senior vice president -- investor relations.

· Studios USA Programming has signed a multi-year overall drama development deal with Emmy and Peabody Award-winning writer/producer Ed Zuckerman, it was announced by Sarah Timberman, president, Studios USA Programming. Zuckerman will serve as co-executive producer of the new Studios USA/CBS Productions drama series The Agency, set to premiere this fall Thursdays at 10:00 PM on CBS. This deal marks a return to the company for Zuckerman as he previously was co-executive producer on Law & Order and had an overall deal with Studios USA predecessor Universal Television.

· Online diet centers eDiets.com, Inc. and DietSmart, Inc., announced they have entered into an agreement to merge organizations in a combined cash and stock transaction. David R. Humble, chairman and CEO of eDiets, will remain chairman and CEO of the combined Company after the merger, and DietSmart CEO Tamara L. Totah will assume the role of president of the Company. Headquartered in Deerfield Beach, Florida, the Company will retain DietSmart's New York City office

· CollegeRecruiting.com, a website connecting high school students with colleges and universities, announced a partnership with The NextStep Magazine. The agreement provides CollegeRecruiting.com broader access to NextStep's national print readership of more than 400,000 high school students and parents who are planning for college. In turn, NextStep's offline and website content will be featured at CollegeRecruiting.com. The NextStep Magazine, published five times per year and distributed at college fairs and 6,500 high schools nationwide, is a free publication designed to educate students about choosing a college.

· Bank of America and AOL Time Warner have announced a multi-platform advertising agreement. Under the multi-year agreement, Bank of America will be promoted across AOL Time Warner's media properties, and AOL Time Warner will launch advertisements across Bank of America's banking channels such as ATMs, statements, and other areas.

· Travelmedia, a producer of marketing and editorial media for the travel industry, announced the debut of PATAradio, a regularly-scheduled travel industry web newscast for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). The newscast debuted July 3rd on PATAnet, the association's combination travel industry and consumer website, and features travel industry news plus videos on destinations in the Pacific and Asia and features on sustainable tourism.

· RadioCentral, Inc., a network radio company that provides custom interactive radio programming for websites, and About.com, announced the launch of the About Radio Network.

· Clickability Inc., a provider of Web-based interactivity tools for online publishers, announced the launch of Clickability Interactivity Reports, its advanced online reporting system. Clickability Inc. builds, syndicates, and manages interactive Web content saving, sharing, and printing tools for Web publishers.

· John F. Lansing has been named senior vice president of The E.W. Scripps Company's broadcast television station subsidiary, effective immediately. Lansing, 43, who has been vice president of operations for the Scripps stations since September 2000, will have strategic and operating oversight responsibilities for the 10 Scripps broadcast television stations. Lansing succeeds James M. Hart, who retired July 1.

· Wink Communications, Inc. announced that Wink's Enhanced Broadcasting technology will be used to create ``on demand'' subscription campaigns for select Time Inc. magazines such as Sports Illustrated and Entertainment Weekly. The first Wink-enhanced ads allowing viewers to order Sports Illustrated will begin airing this quarter.

· Zany Brainy, Inc., a retailer of toys, games, books and multimedia products, announced that Waterton Management, LLC have agreed to fund approximately $115 million which Zany Brainy will utilize in the reorganization of its business operations and ultimate emergence from bankruptcy. Zany Brainy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 15, 2001. The Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors has indicated its support for the proposed transaction, which is subject to Bankruptcy Court approval. Waterton Management is a private investment entity located in Los Angeles, CA.
