ESPN Announces EXPN Magazine Prototype

ESPN will be selling a test issue of EXPN Magazine, a 116-page publication covering action sports, each day of the X Games competition in Philadelphia (August 17-22). The announcement of the EXPN Magazine prototype was made by ESPN The Magazine's Publisher and Vice President Andy Sippel.

EXPN Magazine, with a cover price of $3.99, will also be available at all seven ESPN Zones: New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Baltimore, Anaheim, Atlanta and the recently opened Las Vegas. EXPN Magazines will also be on sale in approximately 1,000 Barnes and Noble and B. Dalton's bookstores.

Steve Malley is the Editor of the test issue, working under the supervision of ESPN The Magazine's Senior-Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, John Papanek. The Creative Director is Darrin Perry, who previously helped ESPN The Magazine win the 1999 National Magazine Award for Design, as the Design Director.

Sippel said, ``Given the success ESPN has had in growing the action sports marketplace, it's very logical we would pursue this. We will evaluate our next steps after the X Games to see what is in store for the future regarding a possible launch date.''

Highlights from the prototype issue include:
  • Just What is Dave Mirra Thinking? The King of BMX is nearly perfect and, according to writer Chris Palmer, that's his biggest problem.
  • High Rollers. At the OP Pro in the Mentawais, Jody Berger catches up with the top 10 surfers and finds out the meaning of life.
  • Zev Borow reports on the new moves and cutting-edge graphics of Tony Hawk's new video game, ``Pro Skater 3.''
  • The Artist Formerly Known as a Snowboarder. Jamie Lynn paints aliens on his snowboards. You'll never guess why. By Jeff Galbraith.
  • 16 States; 3,400 Miles; Two Nights in Jail. At 19, Tyler Buschmann wanted to see America. So he hopped on his skateboard and had one wild ride. By Dan Koeppel.
  • X Games 2001. EXPN takes an in-depth look at the athletes, arena, history, training, and the action. Also included are Sal Masekela's predictions on this year's games.
