Price, Chief Financial Officer, has also been appointed President. In addition, the Board announced that it has created an Office of the President, both members of which will report directly to the Board of Directors, to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the Company. The Board of Directors also named Keven Baxter Senior Vice President of Corporate Development to serve in the Office of the President. James B. Roszak will end his role as interim Chief Executive Officer and resume his position as a member of the Board of Directors and a member of the Audit Committee. · Gannett Co., Inc. announced that Craig Dubow has been named president and chief executive officer of Gannett Broadcasting. Dubow has been president of the division since December. Cecil L. Walker will continue as chairman of Gannett Broadcasting. · Valley Media, Inc., a distributor of music and video entertainment products, announced that the Board of Directors has appointed Mr. Lewis Garrett as President. Additionally, the Board promoted Mr. John Kordic to Executive Vice President of Operations. Mr. Garrett came to Valley Media, Inc. from Camelot Music in June of 2000 to take on the position of Senior VP of Marketing and Purchasing. Mr. Garrett has served as a Chairman of NARM's Retail Advisory Committee and been a member of Country Music Association's Board of Directors. Mr. John Kordic has served Valley Media, Inc. operations since 1993. · Dr. Theodore (Ted) Reed Mitchell, president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, will join the Board of Directors of The McClatchy Company effective Sept. 23, 2001. Digital Publishing · Infotrieve, an online research portal, has entered into content agreements with Oxford University Press, Arnold Publishers, American Meteorological Society (AMS), Bentham Science Publishers Ltd., Royal Society of Medicine, Portland Press Limited, and CABI Publishing. · Digital World Services announced the launch of DWS Rights Locker and DWS Content Manager, two new digital rights management (DRM) products. The DWS Rights Locker is a Web-based rights repository that can be used by retailers, portals and content providers to equip consumers with a secure locker to store the rights to their digital content. These rights can then be redeemed from multiple locations. Operating with offices in New York and Hamburg, Germany, Digital World Services is a subsidiary of Bertelsmann AG. Content Deals · ProQuest Company's Information and Learning unit announced that it has acquired Heritage Quest, a Salt Lake City-based genealogical information company, from Sierra On-Line, Inc., a division of Vivendi Universal Publishing. The Heritage Quest product line -- which includes the Heritage Quest Web-based information service, as well as microfilm, CD-ROMs, and print products (Heritage Quest magazine, Genealogy Bulletin, more than 400 books, and more than 100 indexes) -- will be added to ProQuest's genealogical resources, including the Genealogy and Local History Online database and Sanborn Maps Online. · Outdoor Intel announced a strategic partnership with National Geographic Maps to develop and market a number of consumer products that will combine Fishing Hot Spots (FHS) mapping data with National Geographic Maps' TOPO! software platform. The alliance was formed to develop and market CD-ROMs for outdoor enthusiasts, as well as jointly explore other consumer products such as map-on-demand kiosks and Internet applications. · ConnectivCorp, a medical communications network, announced it has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire The Sexual Health Network, Inc., a privately-owned company. The Sexual Health Network has provided high quality healthcare information and education since 1996. In June, the network's website, SexualHealth.com, received 20,026 unique visitors and a total of 726,158 hits. ConnectivCorp also announced the appointment of Dr. Mitch Tepper, founder and president of The Sexual Health Network, as President of its subsidiary ConnectivHealth. · Meredith Corporation announced that it has retained Moda International Marketing, Inc. to assist in the development of a domestic and international licensing strategy for Meredith's flagship Better Homes and Gardens brand. · Nolo, a publisher of self-help legal tools, announced a marketing alliance with Intuit, a provider of financial software and services, to provide legal solutions for consumers and small businesses under the Quicken Lawyer 2002 software line. This legal software line currently includes two products -- Quicken Lawyer 2002 Personal Deluxe and Quicken Lawyer 2002 Business Deluxe. Launches and Redesigns · The Boston Globe announced that on September 10 it will be offering expanded daily coverage of local news and information in 10 communities west of Boston. The new local report, called Globe West Extra, will appear on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It will supplement the twice-weekly Globe West sections that are published on Thursdays and Sundays. The 10 communities to receive Globe West Extra are Ashland, Dover, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Lincoln, Natick, Sherborn, Sudbury, and Wayland. · AOL Time Warner announced the creation of a new Interactive Video division which will provide Video-on-Demand, Subscription Video-on-Demand, cable IP telephony and other advanced services. Joseph J. Collins has been named Chairman of the new division, reporting to AOL Time Warner CEO Gerald M. Levin. Glenn Britt, President of Time Warner Cable, will succeed Mr. Collins as Chairman and CEO and will report to AOL Time Warner co-COO Bob Pittman. Tom Rutledge, Senior Executive Vice President of Time Warner Cable, will become President of Time Warner Cable. The new division will work closely with Time Warner Cable and America Online to accelerate the delivery of these services over Time Warner Cable's systems as well as other broadband systems. · Wal-Mart has launched an online college bookstore. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Wal-Mart College Bookstore includes more than 300,000 titles. Subjects include architecture, art, history, literature and mathematics. Miscellaneous · FHM, a men's magazine, claims it is the fastest growing magazine in the United States. According to its first half 2001 publisher's statement filed with the Audit Bureau of Circulations, subject to audit, FHM's total paid circulation is 821,834. This figure represents a 105% increase over the same period last year. The announcement was made today by Dana Fields, executive publisher and president. FHM says its total circulation is larger than men's magazine category competitors Men's Fitness (522,675), Men's Journal (635,235), Outside (664,590), Esquire (672,700) and GQ (806,911). FHM launched in March 2000 as a bimonthly and assumed a monthly frequency in September 2000. · ConsumerReports.org, a website from Consumer Reports magazine, announced that its paid subscriber base has reached more than 600,000. · Nancy Paulsen, President and Publisher of G. P. Putnam's Sons, announced that a three book deal was concluded with first time author Michael Hoeye of the children's novel Time Stops for No Mouse. This deal was won in an auction conducted by Marilyn Marlow and Elizabeth Harding of Curtis Brown and gives G. P. Putnam's Sons and Puffin Books the hardcover and paperback rights to Time Stops for No Mouse, The Sands of Time, and Hoeye's third book in the series, as yet untitled. Movie Business · USA Films, a division of USA Networks, Inc.'s Entertainment Group, has hired senior DreamWorks production executive Glenn Williamson as its president of production. USA Films chairman Scott Greenstein made the announcement. Williamson, who begins work at USA next week, will succeed current USA Films president of production Donna Gigliotti, who after two years is leaving the post that was created for her. Gigliotti will continue to work with USA Films through the release of the last two productions that she oversaw for the company, Robert Altman's Gosford Park and Neil LaBute's Possession. Gigliotti, the 1999 Academy Award-winning producer of Shakespeare in Love, will return to producing. It is anticipated that she will continue to work with USA on other projects. · Entertainment Weekly magazine and Loews Cineplex Entertainment are teaming up for Loews' ``Short Film, Big Screen'' contest, which offers independent filmmakers, students, and nationwide moviegoers the opportunity to create a film to be shown onscreen in a national theatre circuit. Contestants are invited to submit their own 30-second policy trailers: spots urging theatre etiquette, such as no smoking, turning off cell phones and pagers, etc. The winning entry will premiere at the 5th Annual Shorts International Film Festival in New York City in November, and will be shown on over 1,400 Loews' screens across the country.
