Heather Guidone is a freelance writer with a special interest in women's health. She has served as the Director of Operations and an Executive Board Member of the Endometriosis Research Center since the organization was founded. Sarah Merson is a freelance health writer, specializing in alternative therapies. She regularly writes for a number of UK-based health and women's magazines. · Gannett Co., Inc. has promoted Diane MacKnight from director/Facilities to vice president/Facilities. MacKnight has been with Gannett for 16 years, supervising the day-to-day operations of the Gannett and USA Today headquarters buildings in Arlington and the company's facilities in New York City and Maryland. Most recently, MacKnight has had responsibility for commissioning Gannett's new, 1.5 million square foot corporate headquarters in Tyson's Corner, VA. The move to the new building, directed by MacKnight, is expected this fall. · The Boston Globe announced that Mark Pothier, executive editor of Memorial Press Group newspapers, and Tom Coakley, assistant metropolitan editor of the Globe, have been named co-editors of the paper's new Globe South section, which debuts Thursday, September 6. Globe South is replacing the Globe's current Sunday South Weekly section and will appear twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. · MarketWatch.com, Inc., a financial news resource, announced the following promotions in its San Francisco and Minneapolis locations:
Digital Publishing · Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a provider of handheld ebook reading devices, announced a partnership with Vivendi Universal Publishing (VUPublishing). Franklin will make available French educational reference works including eight Larousse and Le Robert branded monolingual and bilingual dictionaries as well as a thesaurus. Each will be available as an Internet download or as a multimedia memory card for eBookMan users. Content Deals · Primedia Inc. announced it has completed the acquisition of emap usa (formerly known as Petersen Publishing) from EMAP plc, forming the second largest consumer magazine company in the U.S. Emap usa's 60 consumer titles include Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Teen, Surfer and Stereophile and complement many existing Primedia products in markets including automotive, teen, outdoor, active sports and consumer electronics. · MarketResearch.com and Simmons Market Research Bureau announced a new partnership to co-publish market research studies covering a variety of consumer sectors. Both companies will sell and market the co-branded reports. This is the first time Simmons, a provider of multi-media marketing information, has joined in such a publishing venture. · CityXpress.com Corp, a provider of online editorial content with advertising and promotional products for media companies, announced that Lee Enterprises, a US media company, has made an additional investment in CityXpress of up to USD $1.5 million for a total investment of up to USD $3.0 million. The list of Xpress Special Sections currently offered by CityXpress includes Home & Garden, Health & Wellness, Outdoors & Recreation, Professional Services, Dining & Entertainment, Holidays and Wheels Today. · West Group announced that it has acquired ProLaw, a provider of front-office and back-office management systems to the legal market. Privately held ProLaw is based in Albuquerque, N.M., and was founded in 1987 by President and CEO Bill Bice. From its headquarters in Albuquerque, ProLaw will be the center for West Group law practice management solutions development and marketing initiatives, including WestWorks product and practice library development. Bice, along with the entire ProLaw management team, will remain with the company, with Bice reporting to West Group President Mike Wilens. · CPA2Biz announced that it has completed an agreement with Morningstar, Inc., and that Morningstar Reports, Due Diligence information, and editorial content about investing and the latest trends in financial planning are now available online at its business services hub at cpa2biz.com. Launches and Redesigns · A new online service from Hallmark aims to help people easily create photograph and story keepsakes. Launched Aug. 24, Hallmark Stories combines digital pictures with Hallmark storytelling and design expertise to create personalized albums and ther memory-keeping products. · Epic Records has announced the relaunch of EpicRecords.com. Epic New Media collaborated with an in-house Sony Music Online team in the redesign of the new label site. Upon immediate arrival at EpicRecords.com, visitors are greeted by a streaming clip from the ``Artist Of The Week.'' ``Artist On The Rise'' highlights an up-and-coming act on the label; ``New Music Mondays'' spotlights a new track each week; and ``Watch, Listen & Win'' gives viewers a chance to win prizes while watching a video or listening to a song from one of Epic's latest releases. EpicRecords.com features eleven sections in all, including a Wireless page where fans can sign up to get breaking artist news sent to their cell phones. The site also allows users to play games, test their musical prowess in the Music Trivia game, have target practice with Spaceboy or check out the Epic Match Game. · AtomShockwave Corp. announced new versions of its entertainment websites, atomfilms.com and shockwave.com. The sites will deliver a broad range of new entertainment, spanning extreme comedy series, live-action dramas, and multiplayer game titles. The AtomFilms website, a destination for film and animation, and now host to Shockwave.com's collection of animated shows, marks the occasion with several premieres, including Jim Belushi's extreme comedy series The Greedy Show, and the full-length debut of Jeff Lester's live-action comedy The Last Real Cowboys, starring Billy Bob Thornton. The Shockwave.com site, a destination for games and interactive entertainment, is debuting Multiplayer Blackjack. Miscellaneous · Online retailer buy.com announced the renewal of its merchant services bankcard agreement, which provides for authorization, processing and settlement services in connection with MasterCard, VISA and other bankcard programs. Scott Blum, buy.com's founder, provided the necessary financial support which enabled buy.com to obtain the renewal. There was concern that buy.com would not be able to renew its merchant services agreement which was to expire on September 1, 2001. · Despite recast projections from numerous research organizations, the new Online Advertising Report forecasts that online advertising spending is holding its own and will continue to grow steadily over the next several years. The Online Advertising Report from eMarketer cites data from more than 50 research organizations and consultancies, offering widely divergent projections for online advertising's future. eMarketer forecasts online ad spending will reach $7.6 billion by year-end 2001, a relatively modest 7% increase from the $7.1 billion spent in 2000. Despite the recent economic downturn, online advertising expenditures will continue to grow; increasing to $10.3 billion in 2002 and by 2005 will top $23 billion. · Shareholders of American Absorbents Natural Products, Inc. of Austin on Friday approved proposals to change the company's name to Earful of Books, Inc., and to transfer AANPI's articles of incorporation from Utah to the state of Delaware. Earful of Books, also based in Austin, is an audiobooks-only store chain, currently renting and selling books on cassette and CD to more than 120,000 members. Earful initiated a reverse merger with American Absorbents earlier this summer, disclosing the agreement on July 6. The company will now seek approval to change the trading symbol from AMAB to EARS.
