· The New York Times announced that Andrew Rosenthal, who has been the foreign editor, has been named assistant manager editor and Roger Cohen, deputy foreign editor, has been named acting foreign editor. Howell Raines, executive editor, made the announcements. Both promotions are effective immediately.

· Michael Holley, sports columnist for the Boston Globe, will be joining the Chicago Tribune sports staff as a columnist. He will join Rick Morrissey in sharing the ``In the Wake of the News'' column, beginning in October. Holley has been with the Globe for seven years, serving as a full-time columnist the last two. Prior to being named columnist, Holley covered the Celtics and college sports.

· Style.com, the online home of Vogue and W, announced the appointment of Candy Pratts Price as executive fashion director. Pratts Price will oversee the site's fashion content and assume the role of fashion spokesperson for Style.com.

· election.com, a global managed election services provider, announced the appointment of Peter J. Sym as Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Sym brings financial, strategic planning and business development experience to the executive management team at election.com.

· Starting this Sunday, September 16, former president of the 76ers and eternal optimist Pat Croce will write a weekly motivational column for Inquirer, The Philadelphia Inquirer's Sunday magazine. Called Inspire, Croce's column will be based on what he enjoys most: encouraging others to look at the positive and making a difference in people's lives.

· Primedia, a targeted media company, announced that Cindi Reding has been promoted to vice president of technology for Primedia Business Magazines & Media after serving as director of shared services for more than two years, and most recently as interim vice president of information services. Primedia also announced that Jacqueline Blum has been named president of Primedia Enterprises, the licensing arm of Primedia. Ms. Blum was previously president of licensing, sales and marketing for emap usa (formerly known as Petersen Publishing), which was recently acquired by Primedia. Ms. Blum will be responsible for continuing the development and expansion of brand and content licensing efforts across all of Primedia's properties and integrating opportunities with emap usa's 60 consumer titles.

· IDG World Expo, an IT tradeshow producer, announced the appointment of Darrell Baker as vice president, event services. In this newly created position, Mr. Baker will expand IDG World Expo's event services and cement relationships with host cities, industry trade groups and event service providers. Mr. Baker comes to IDG World Expo from the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, where he served as vice president, convention sales.

· Utah Business magazine announced that it has named Barry Scholl as its new senior editor. Scholl will be responsible for developing market-responsive editorial plans and implementing the magazine's content strategy. Scholl joins Utah Business from Utah Outdoors magazine, where he was editor-in-chief. In that position, he participated in developing the magazine's editorial, circulation and on-line strategies. Prior to working for Utah Outdoors, Scholl worked at Salt Lake magazine, where he was managing editor from 1995-1997 and editor-in-chief from 1997-2000

· Jon Arnold, an expert on energy information technology, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Energy IT magazine, published by Platts, the energy information and market services unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies.

· Jack McElroy, a veteran newsroom leader who helped guide the Rocky Mountain News in Denver to its first Pulitzer Prize, has been named editor of The Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel, effective Nov. 1. McElroy, 48, succeeds Harry Moskos, who will retire Oct. 31. Moskos, who has reached the mandatory retirement age established by Scripps for its senior managers, has been editor of the News-Sentinel since 1984. The Rocky Mountain News and the News-Sentinel are owned and operated by The E. W. Scripps Company.

Digital Publishing

· PointMedia Corp., a company gearing up to provide news, entertainment, online purchasing and point-of-purchase promotional incentives to consumers at gas pumps, and ScreamingMedia Inc., a provider of content and technology solutions, announced an agreement in which ScreamingMedia will supply various content for PointMedia's PointTV network. Initially, selected information including jokes of the day, horoscopes and local weather reports will be available to petroleum customers who are interacting with PointTV as they fill up their tank.

· Ignite Sports, an interactive sports publisher, announced the introduction of SportsEditor, a publishing system designed to enable sports properties, including professional sports leagues, universities and conferences,

· iUniverse, a provider of epublishing solutions, announced a publishing partnership with Weekly Reader, a publisher of elementary and secondary classroom periodicals. Using iUniverse's publishing technology, the publishing program allows students and teachers in classrooms across the country to create and publish their own paper back books.

Content Deals

· MSN and ESPN.com announced an agreement to deliver to consumers access to ESPN's online sports content on the Web through the MSN network of Internet services. ESPN.com will be the exclusive sports content provider for the MSN sports channel and will have preferred positioning on the MSN home page. ESPN.com's sports content will be integrated with MSN and will carry MSN branding and links throughout the ESPN.com site.

· Platts, a global energy information and marketing services business of The McGraw-Hill Companies, announced it has acquired Financial Times Energy (FT Energy), a provider of energy information, research and consulting services, from Pearson plc. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

· United Business Media announced the acquisition of Kenko Sangyo Shimbun Inc (KSS), a Japanese exhibition and publishing group, for a net consideration of approximately $8 million in cash. KSS specialises in the healthcare and food ingredients market. KSS's portfolio includes Hi Japan, a food ingredients show in Japan, the Tokyo Health Industry Show, and the Drug Store Show. Its publications include Food Processing, Medical Nutrition and Health Industry News.

· CityXpress.com Corp, a provider of online editorial content, announced The Bakersfield Californian, an independent newspaper with a daily circulation of 72,810 and a Sunday circulation of 84,216, has signed an agreement to launch Xpress Special Sections on its website.

· U.S.News & World Report announced a strategic editorial relationship with Healthology, Inc. Specifically, the agreement will provide usnews.com users with health information from expert physicians across the country. Healthology's content library contains nearly 1,000 video programs on a full range of subjects related to health and medicine, including various forms of cancer, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.

Forbes.com and Newmediary, Inc. announced the launch of an online business directory and RFP-powered search tool for the business community. Newmediary, which builds and manages online directory solutions for content and community sites, has integrated its directory of ebusiness service providers with the Forbes.com website.

Luxury Link, a luxury travel website, and Forbes.com, a business magazine, have joined forces to create a new offering for the discerning traveler. A new area in the Forbes.com Lifestyle travel channel provides a weekly listing of unique travel offers available through Luxury Link, including Luxury Travel Auctions and ``Hot Deals'' from the world's best hotels in both popular and out-of-the-way destinations.

The Chicago Tribune has reached an agreement to partner with cityfeet.com, an on-line vendor to the commercial real estate market. Cityfeet will join the chicagotribune.com home page under ``Real Estate,'' which will now have a ``commercial link.'' Cityfeet specializes in small to middle range properties and is supported with listing revenues and other advertising. Through this agreement, reached by Tribune Interactive, cityfeet/Chicago Tribune will provide a marketplace for listing agents, landlords and prospective tenants.

Target Corporation and Amazon.com announced plans to open a Target store at amazon.com beginning later this fall, which will include thousands of apparel, home, electronics and jewelry products. The companies also announced that Target has chosen Amazon.com's solution of ecommerce technology services, order fulfillment, and customer care services for its current online properties, including target.com, MarshallFields.com, Mervyns.com and GiftCatalog.com, beginning in summer 2002.

Launches and Redesigns

Publisher Joan Twan announced that her new magazine called Surprise! will debut in the Seattle area in October. Surprise! will position itself as a magazine that explores today's entrepreneurial person. Articles included will focus on how to be organized and self-sufficient, make the right choices, communications, finance, maintain the right attitude, wellness and personal growth. The magazine also features advice columns as well as an entertaining column that gives attention to the food and wine community. Distribution quantity is 100,000 copies, to include: Queen Anne, Magnolia, Ballard, Capitol Hill/Montlake, West Seattle, Laurelhurst, Greenlake, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and Mercer Island.

eBay, an online marketplace, announced the grand opening of eBay Stores. To formally introduce eBay Stores to its community of users, eBay is featuring popular eBay Stores categories and individual sellers on its homepage and throughout the site. More than 20,000 sellers have set up shop and are actively selling in eBay Stores.

Zoom Media Group (ZMG) announced it has changed the name of Punto-com magazine to Poder. The Miami-based company said the name change reflects the magazine's expanding editorial focus on the regional Latin American economy. Punto-com will officially become Poder in its October issue. The magazine revealed its new name in a ``second cover'' in its September issue. According to Lee, Poder was chosen to reflect the growing power of a new generation of business leaders and a new style of business in Latin America.

Virgo Publishing Inc. announced the launch of forensic nurse magazine, written and edited for forensic nurses and their associates, including medical examiners, coroners, laboratory personnel, hospital administrators, as well as FBI, government and public health officials. As the new field of forensic nursing progresses from infancy to maturity, forensic nurse magazine fills the previously unmet need for a cutting-edge publication devoted exclusively to forensic nurses.

NakedNews.com plans to launch Naked News TV!, a weekly television news magazine program, Friday, Sept. 7 on Viewer's Choice Pay Per View. A new episode of Naked News TV! will premiere every Friday beginning at 6 a.m. ET and air all weekend long on Viewer's Choice. The pay-per-view cost is $3.99 per show. Naked News TV! and Naked News.com are produced in Toronto.

CMP Media's InformationWeek, an IT media brand, debuted a redesign of its website InformationWeek.com. Individual webpages automatically provide related content relevant to search topics such as research reports, white papers and Listening Post discussions. InformationWeek.com also revised the technology center portion of the site by enhancing the content to include features like opinion columns, white papers, interactive career development and IT benchmarking tools.

International Data Group (IDG), an IT media and information services company, announced it has enhanced its portfolio of Java-specific offerings including the redesign of JavaWorld.com. The redesigned site features Google's enhanced search functionality. In addition, a more robust archival system has been added as well as a new ``Topical Index'' featuring five top-level Java topics: Core Java, Enterprise Java, Micro Java, Applied Java and Java Community.

kpe, a digital solutions provider to Media and Entertainment companies, has announced the publication of ``Entertainment, Technology and the Bottom Line.'' This first in a series of reports on the state of entertainment and technology analyzes the changing role technology is playing for top media companies. With interactive technologies now integrated to support the core business processes and brands that have been nurtured over decades, the report addresses areas of opportunity for entertainment companies to improve the creation, distribution, marketing and monetization of content.

Newly launched Linguaguide.com brings new articles about language learning twice every week, and has hand-picked links to resources and materials for twenty different languages. The language learning tips section includes books for language learners, books for language teachers, websites for learners, and websites for teachers.

DevX, a provider of information and services for application developers, announced the launch of the Web Development Zone, which provides information, tools and solutions for Web developers and designers. The site features step-by-step instruction, technical articles, and tips and tools.

eMedicine.com, a publisher of online medical references, announced the launch of its new Internet site for the law community. The new site offers full text and images geared towards helping lawyers and their researchers prepare case materials.

Miscellaneous

Primedia announced that Seventeen magazine will begin publishing in six new international markets. Primedia's Seventeen magazine will begin publishing in Venezuela and Mexico in September 2001, Indonesia in November 2001, China in December 2001, Russia in December 2001 and Colombia in early 2002.

PayPal, an online payment system, announced that it has surpassed 10 million registered users.

GORP.COM (Great Outdoor Recreation Pages), an Internet site for outdoor recreation and adventure travel, announced that the company has secured its third round of financing. Participants include previous investors BNP Paribas (Banque Nationale de Paris), Capstone Ventures, FD5 as well as several individual investors.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) announced the recipients of its 2001 Excellence in Journalism Awards, a program that rewards four $1,000 prizes for the year's best work in gay-related journalism, as well as an honors certificate for Excellence in New Media. Established in 1993 to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the gay and lesbian community, the cash awards consist of four categories: Written Opinion/Editorial, Written News/Feature, Audio/Radio Reporting, and Video/TV Reporting. The awards were presented at the 2001 NLGJA Convention in Dallas, Texas on Friday, September 7, 2001.

Intel Corporation plans to present a series of books to help guide businesses in the design and build-out of their ebusiness strategies. The IT-focused effort was developed with leading researchers, vendors and end-users, and is intended to show information technology decision-makers how to use the Internet for greater business performance and competitive advantage. The collection of books, called the IT Best Practices Series, will begin publication this fall. The first three books in the series will feature content developed in collaboration with META Group and other companies. The titles include: The Adaptive Enterprise: IT Infrastructure Strategies to Manage Change and Enable Growth, Enriching The Value Chain: Infrastructure Strategies Beyond the Enterprise and Securing Business Information: Strategies to Protect the Enterprise and Its Network.

THQ Inc. announced a worldwide, exclusive agreement with Britney Brands Inc. to publish games featuring one of the biggest names in pop entertainment, Britney Spears. The agreement grants THQ exclusive rights to publish Britney Spears games for Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo Game Boy Advance and PC through 2005. The first Britney Spears videogame is scheduled to release in spring 2002.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who has a legendary private jewelry collection, has signed a joint partnership deal with Simon & Schuster to publish an extraordinary illustrated jewelry book. Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair With Jewelry will be written by Miss Taylor and include anecdotes and memories about her rare collection.

The New York New Media Association (NYNMA) announced the formation of its new Emerging Technology Special Interest Group (SIG). Emerging Technology SIG participants include developers, senior technology managers and decision makers from New York's leading industries.

Movie Business

Hardball, will open nationwide in the United States and Canada in over 2100 theaters on Friday, September 14. Down on his luck, Conor O'Neill (Keanu Reeves) is offered an opportunity to wipe away his gambling debts if ... he'll take a job coaching a baseball team of underprivileged Chicago youths. As he molds the tough, street-smart youngsters into a cohesive unit, the impoverished kids offer O'Neill valuable lessons about trust and heart -- and a chance at redemption and purpose in his life. Keanu Reeves stars in Hardball, a Paramount Pictures presentation in association with Fireworks Pictures, directed by Brian Robbins. Diane Lane co-stars, and also appearing in the film are John Hawkes, D.B. Sweeney, Mike McGlone and Graham Beckel. The screenplay is by John Gatins, based upon the book by Daniel Coyle.
