Menaker comes to HarperCollins from Random House, where he has been Senior Literary Editor for the last six years. Prior to his time at Random House, Menaker spent 26 years at The New Yorker, starting as a fact checker and copy editor before serving as Senior Editor for 20 years. · The New York Times Company announced the promotion of Kenneth A. Richieri to the position of deputy general counsel. In his new role Mr. Richieri will report to Mr. Watson. Mr. Richieri will also retain his current title and responsibilities as vice president and general counsel of New York Times Digital, reporting to Martin Nisenholtz, chief executive officer of New York Times Digital, and will retain operational responsibility for NYTD's archive distribution business. ·Yack Media Services, an online event guide, has hired Ian Ross as Vice President of Sales. The announcement was made today by Yack President and CEO Steve Fredericks. As the new VP of Sales, Ross will contribute to the continuing success of Yack Media Services. Prior to joining Yack Media Services, Ross was VP of Sales for Travelocity and subsequently their parent company Sabre where he was responsible for the syndication of travel-related sponsorships and services. · Zoom Media Group (ZMG) announced Maria Garana would become the company's new CEO effective immediately. Garana was formerly CFO and VP of Business Development of Todito.com, TV Azteca's US Hispanic Portal. · CRM magazine announced that effective immediately, Elliot Markowitz commands the post of Editor-In-Chief, with responsibilities that include the editorial direction of the magazine and its website. Markowitz, a 12-year veteran of journalism and publishing, joins CRM magazine after more than 10 years at CMP Media, where he served as the Editor of CRN, formerly Computer Reseller News. · American Lawyer Media, Inc. (ALM), a media company focused on professional markets, recently appointed Mike Orren as publisher of Texas Lawyer, the state's leading legal newspaper. Orren occupies a position formerly held by Eric Lundberg, who has joined ALM's corporate staff in New York as Vice President of Finance. Orren joins Texas Lawyer from CliffMedia, LLC, a media consulting company, where he served as founder and president. · Kenneth J. DePaola Jr. has been named Vice President/Advertiser Marketing and Sales for the Chicago Tribune. DePaola, who joins the newspaper on October 15, will succeed Dennis Grant, a 33-year Chicago Tribune veteran, who earlier announced he will retire at the end of the year. DePaola and Grant will jointly lead Chicago Tribune's advertising initiatives through the rest of the year. · Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced changes within its successful Cygnus Security Group. Ed Tyler, publisher of Advanced Imaging, will become Group Publisher of the Cygnus Security Group. Steve Lasky, current publisher of Security Technology & Design and Locksmith Ledger, will also become editorial director of the group. In addition to the promotions, Thomas Hughes, formerly an associate publisher for Kates-Boylston Publications, will join as Publisher of Security Dealer. Security Dealer's current Publisher Arnold Blumenthal who has been with the magazine since its inception more than 30 years ago as well as Group Publisher of the Cygnus Security Group will now become Publisher Emeritus. · Vanguarde Media, Inc. announced that it has appointed Mark A. Peterson the company's Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Mr. Peterson will have primary responsibility for the ongoing management and coordination of all operating units and most staff functions of the company. Peterson will also assist in establishing company objectives, policies, and long-range goals. He will report to VMI Chairman and CEO, Keith T. Clinkscales. · Yahoo! Inc., an Internet communications and media company, announced the appointment of Wenda Harris Millard as chief advertising sales officer. Millard will be responsible for driving the North American sales of the company's advertising and marketing services initiatives and leading the North American sales organization. Millard will report to Gregory Coleman, executive vice president of North American operations. · Robert F. Callahan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ziff Davis Media Inc., announced that Stephen D. Moylan is joining the company as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, effective immediately. Moylan was most recently CEO and President of ThingWorld Multimedia, a venture-backed internet software and services company. In his new role at Ziff Davis Media, Moylan will report directly to Callahan. · Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing North America (VUIPNA) announced that Simon Etchells has been appointed as the Senior Director of its Partner Publishing Group (PPG). This newly established group is chartered with developing and managing relationships with the company's co-publishing and distribution partners, which currently include Empire Interactive, Interplay, Fox Interactive, Legacy Interactive and Mythic Entertainment. In his new role, Etchells will be responsible for directing North American sales, marketing and distribution strategies, working closely with all of the PPG partners. He will report directly to Philip W. O'Neil, Senior Vice President of Sales for VUIPNA. · David Stoeffler has been elected to the newly created position of vice president for news at Lee Enterprises. Stoeffler, editor of the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star, Lee's second-largest daily newspaper, will begin his new duties Dec. 1, based at the corporate offices in Davenport. Mary Junck, president and chief executive officer, said the appointment will help accelerate activities around three of Lee's top priorities -- an emphasis on strong local news, improvement in readership and circulation, and continued online development. Digital Publishing · Stealth Press is offering a free downloadable Halloween Ebook: All Hallows-E: Halloween Tales from Seven Masters of Terror. The ebook includes stories from Ray Bradbury, William F. Nolan, Al Sarrantonio, John Shirley, Peter Straub, Chesea Quinn Yarbro and F.Paul Wilson. Content Deals · Alibris, a supplier of hard-to-find books, and OCLC Online Computer Library Center are collaborating to offer access to a broader selection of books for libraries and their users. Alibris and OCLC will provide comprehensive links between the Alibris Library Services website and OCLC's WorldCat database. Libraries that subscribe to WorldCat through the OCLC FirstSearch service, an online reference service, will have the option to link to Alibris where they'll find out-of-print and rare books for sale. In addition, Alibris customers who cannot find the book they are looking for on the Alibris Library Services website will have the option to check WorldCat holdings for the item to determine whether it is available at a nearby library. · Abebooks.com, a source for out-of-print and hard-to-find books, announced it has acquired JustBooks, an online platform for used and antiquarian books in Europe. The JustBooks acquisition will allow abebooks.com to accelerate its growth in Europe. · TheScientificWorld, Inc., a company providing online scientific resources, announced that it has acquired and will merge its operations with Gaithersburg, Md.-based ScienceWise, Inc. The merged companies, which have nearly 300,000 registered members, expect to combine their operations by year-end. · Bobit Publishing Company, owner of Police Magazine, a trade publication for law enforcement professional, announced the acquisition of the two TREXPO (Tactical & Technology Resources Expo.), East and West, trade shows from The Varro Group. Bobit's Trade Show and Police Magazine staff will manage the day-to-day operations of the two shows. TREXPO East is held annually in Chantilly, Virginia in August. TREXPO West is scheduled for March 21-22, 2002 in Ontario, California. · Medical Economics Company, a division of The Thomson Corporation, announced its acquisition of Princeton, NJ-based eMedguides.com. This acquisition, by the publisher of the Physicians' Desk Reference, expands Medical Economics' portfolio of healthcare information products to include proprietary directories of Internet resources organized by medical sub-specialty. · Belo announced that it has completed the purchase of KSKN-TV, the WB/UPN affiliate in Spokane, Washington. Belo previously operated KSKN under a local marketing agreement with KSKN-TV, Inc. and had announced plans to purchase the station earlier this year. The total acquisition cost for KSKN was $5 million in cash. · Peterson's, a source of education and career information, announced a new partnership with TIME Magazine. The partnership will entail a series of efforts designed to provide high school students with information about college planning and career exploration. These initiatives include a co-branded offering of Get a Jump!, a college- and career-planning resource targeted to high school students, as well as a co-branded searchable college database of 3,700 two-and four-year institutions in the U.S. and Canada available on the TIME website, time.com. Launches and Redesigns · A group of Seattle authors has created a website for writers to publish their views on the recent spate of terrorism and its result on life in America. WritersUnite.org will offer published and unpublished writers a place to discuss and add perspective to the events of the past weeks. In the site's first week, published authors and a national NPR host weighed in with essays. In addition to essays and poems, the site will catalog and store many of the email attachments that have made their way around the web. · GoTo.com Inc., a provider of Pay-For-Performance search to websites, has changed its name to Overture Services Inc. As announced last month, the company will cease operating under the name GoTo, will begin operating as Overture and commence trading its stock under a new ticker symbol (Nasdaq:OVER - news). In addition, the company launched a new corporate website at overture.com. · Bloomberg.com has unveiled an enhanced version of the "Market Monitor". An information-packed window that launches from Bloomberg.com, the "Market Monitor" gives investors live news, information, and updates on US and foreign stocks, funds, and indices they choose, along with a live video feed from Bloomberg Television. The "Market Monitor" can now run whether or not Bloomberg.com is open on a user's browser. · Blessingway Authors' Services, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has launched a multilingual website showcasing independently published books to the international market. The site presents select US titles for foreign rights licensing in six languages -- Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, and English -- with more to come. · Rubicon Media has launched a new website which will publish daily cartoons about the world of writing, publishing and bookselling. The cartoons are drawn by Julian Lake, an author published by Rubicon Media. The cartoons will capture the funny side of the book business. Julian Lake has been a keen observer of the world of publishing for nearly thirty years as a writer, journalist, publisher and cartoonist. Miscellaneous · Snowball, an online network for young adults, announced that the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel has determined to continue listing Snowball's securities on the Nasdaq SmallCap Market and has closed the related listings qualifications hearing file. · College Publisher, a provider of publishing technologies and marketing services aimed at reaching college students and recent graduates, announced it has secured $8.5 million in second round funding. Lead investors included Venture Capital Fund of New England (VCFNE) and Advanced Technology Ventures of Waltham, Mass. and Palo Alto, Calif.
