· CMP Media LLC has named John Dorsey the new executive editor for Windows Developer Magazine. Taking over from departing senior editor, Ron Burk, who returns full-time to software development, Dorsey is spearheading an editorial refocusing that will align the magazine more closely with the rapidly changing Windows development market. Before joining the Windows Developer team, Dorsey was the Senior Editor, Digital Media, at Dr. Dobb's Journal.

· Brian Greenspun, president of The Greenspun Corporation, announced that Howard Lefkowitz has been named president of Vegas.com. Recently, Lefkowitz served as vice president of business development and Internet marketing at EarthLink.

· Seventeen magazine's new editor-in-chief, Annemarie Iverson, announced the appointment of Shawn Young to the position of Creative Director. Formerly the Creative Director at InStyle responsible for the reinvention of its cover look, he previously redesigned Mirabella, and was the Art Director of Allure. At Seventeen, Young will direct an overall redesign of the magazine. Also newly appointed to the masthead are Doug Perlman, Executive Editor of Primedia's newly formed Teen Unit, which includes seventeen, Teen magazine and the Youth Entertainment Group titles; Regina Teplitsky, Fashion Director, and Diana Byrne, Beauty Director.

· Standard Register announced the appointment of Laurie Spiegelberg as a corporate officer and vice president of corporate communications. Spiegelberg is responsible for employee communications, public relations, investor relations, corporate events, corporate identity and branding, and marketing communications.

Digital Publishing

· SealedMedia, providers of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, announced new funding of $16.5 million. The new investment came from Pond Venture Partners, Crescendo Ventures and 3i.

· Adobe Systems, Incorporated announced the availability of the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader for international markets. International eBook Readers are now available in French, German and Spanish and can be downloaded at no charge from the respective international Adobe Web sites. Localized eBook content in each of these regions can also be accessed through the ``Bookstore'' button within the Acrobat eBook Reader.

· Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a licensing agent for text reproduction rights, and MSNBC.com, an Internet news site, announced that Rightslink, CCC's digital rights management solution, will soon launch on MSNBC.com. MSNBC.com will use Rightslink to instantly license and deliver digital content, such as interactive links and original news articles, directly to customers. Rightslink licenses and delivers online content electronically to end-users. By clicking on a link located near a news item on MSNBC.com, customers can obtain instant permission to reuse that content in print and digital formats.

Content Deals

· Thomas Nelson, Inc. and CRG Acquisition Corp. said they have signed a definitive agreement by which Nelson will sell and CRG will purchase substantially all the assets of Nelson's wholly-owned subsidiary, The C.R. Gibson Company. C.R. Gibson, founded in 1870, is a leading designer, marketer and distributor of premium stationery and memory albums. The business is expected to operate from its Nashville headquarters with Joseph Moore, currently C.R. Gibson President, retaining his post and responsibilities. No change is expected in staff responsibilities of the company's 150 employees.

· Audible Inc. announced that it has entered into a marketing and distribution agreement with Cyberian Outpost. The agreement calls for Outpost.com to make Audible.com's Internet audio services available to its 1.4 million customers.

· Riverdeep Group plc, a developer of school-age interactive learning solutions, announced the formation of a strategic alliance with Harcourt Education Group, the US based K-12 education business recently acquired by Reed Elsevier plc, to collaborate on the development of e-Basal interactive digital instructional content. The alliance will address the emerging market for e-Basal products, combining Riverdeep's digital curriculum and technology with Harcourt's K-12 Basal publishing and distribution. Riverdeep and Harcourt will co-develop these new products to be distributed by Harcourt under the Harcourt brand. Riverdeep will be paid development fees and receive royalties from the sale of such products. Both parties will retain and manage their independent product businesses outside the scope of this alliance. In a related transaction, Reed Elsevier made an equity investment of $25 million in Riverdeep.

· Ziff Davis Media Inc. announced the sale of its 50% interest in Mac Publishing LLC, a joint venture with International Data Group (IDG), to IDG. Mac Publishing LLC publishes Macworld magazine and companion websites Macworld.com and MacCentral.

Launches and Redesigns

· Resolve: The National Infertility Association, is launching a new quarterly magazine this month, Family Building, with its first cover story exploring the benefits of pets for people experiencing infertility. The magazine is being introduced at a reception in New York City, sponsored by Serono, Inc., during National Infertility Awareness Week, October 7-14. Each issue of Family Building will include a review of current medical options, adoption, advocacy and legal issues, a discussion of ways to heal the body, mind and spirit during treatment, a perspective on male infertility and information on coping after infertility and the decision to live child-free. Noted medical experts and counselors answer questions from readers and Book Center section provides a listing of new releases.

Miscellaneous

· iUniverse, a provider of epublishing solutions, is encouraging individuals around the nation to submit their stories of September 11 -- from first-hand accounts to acts of kindness to stories of American pride. The company plans to edit and compile the most representative stories into what will be a national storybook reflecting the voice of America. All proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to the American Red Cross. Submissions will be accepted from now until November 11, 2001 at iuniverse.com.

· R.R. Bowker, a publisher of bibliographic information, has added thousands of records for books from Australia to globalbooksinprint.com, a database of worldwide English-language books, spoken word audio and videos available for sale.

· Industry expert have moved to discredit the myth that anthrax can be transmitted by the printed page. In response to news stories that have chronicled fears that anthrax may be transmitted by any form of paper media, Frank J. Romano, Chair of the School of Printing at the Rochester Institute of Technology issued the following statement:

``Based on recent events, we are aware of public concerns regarding health and safety of printed matter. It's critically important to understand that the printing process today is driven by the electronic transmission of data from publishing locations to remote printing sites that are distributed geographically. I support the Centers For Disease Control statement that said, ``The public is at no risk of disease from handling printed paper. There is no risk of exposure of anthrax being transmitted by handling any tabloids or any publications published by American Media.``
