· Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), a nonprofit children's literacy organization, has named Carol Hampton Rasco as its new president and chief executive officer. Ms. Rasco will assume her new responsibilities on November 1, succeeding Dr. William E. Trueheart. Ms. Rasco has a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas and a M.S. in Elementary Counseling from the University of Central Arkansas.

· Line56, an ebusiness media company, announced that publishing veteran Jack Dolce has joined its Board of Directors. Dolce is formerly the EVP of CMP's Enterprise Computing Group, and EVP of Strategy and Development for Ziff Davis. He is also the founder of Interactive Enterprises, the company that started Inter@ctive Week and Sm@rt Reseller magazines, and later sold them to Ziff Davis.

· MusicNet announced the appointment of Alan McGlade as President and CEO. As head of the company, Mr. McGlade will oversee the development and deployment of the MusicNet service, which MusicNet recently announced was being delivered to distribution partners AOL and RealNetworks. MusicNet will be headquartered in New York, and the technology development and operations teams will remain in Seattle. Mr. McGlade will also serve on the MusicNet board of directors.

· College Publisher and eGrad, companies that provide interactive marketing and technology services to the college market, announced the appointment of Mark Businski as Vice President of National Advertising and Tricia Black as Director of Business Development.

· Cox Interactive Media (CIMedia) announced that Jon Glass has been promoted to studio manager for GoPBI.com, CIMedia's city site for the Palm Beaches. As studio manager, Glass will oversee all aspects of CIMedia's West Palm Beach studio. The studio's local team develops and produces GoPBI.com, a CIMedia city site linking local residents to life in the Palm Beaches. Glass will serve as the site's primary liaison between GoPBI.com and its partners The Palm Beach Post, NEWS 12, Adelphia, Palm Beach Daily News and Florida Pennysaver.

Digital Publishing

· The Globe and Mail, a national newspaper in Canada, announced that a digital version of the complete daily print newspaper is now available for download via NewsStand's digital distribution service. Information on subscriptions can be obtained http://www.globeandmail.com/subscriptions. The digital version of The Globe and Mail will be an exact replica of the print edition of the newspaper, including advertisements, photographs and full articles.

· Scholastic Inc., a children's publishing and media company, has released the flagship title of its epublishing initiative -- an enhanced, interactive, ebook edition of A Time for Courage: The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen. The newest title in the Dear America series, is available free at Scholastic.com for a limited time, and will be offered through other major ebook retail outlets. Scholastic plans to release additional titles in its new ebook program in November drawing from its new Teen Imprint-PUSH, reference titles for the home, school, and library markets, a number of additional titles from the Dear America series, and children's picture books.

Content Deals

· News Corporation announced the completion of the sale of Fox Family Worldwide, Inc. to Walt Disney Company. The sale follows the July 23 announcement that News Corporation and Haim Saban had agreed to sell Fox Family Worldwide to Walt Disney Company. News Corp., through its majority-owned subsidiary Fox Entertainment Group, and Haim Saban each owned 49.5 percent of Fox Family Worldwide; Allen & Company Inc. owned the remaining 1 percent.

· Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced it has acquired GSE Today magazine, and GSEToday.com from New Mexico-based General Publications, LLC and GSE Expo from GSE International Expo, LLC. The acquisition will broaden the company's reach within its Aviation & Transportation market, which currently includes Airport Business, Aircraft Maintenance Technology, Mass Transit, AMTonline.com, Airportbusiness.com and Masstransitmag.com.

· iLanguage, a provider of translation and localization services, has announced an agreement with MSNBC.com. Under the terms of the agreement, iLanguage will provide daily translation of major news articles into eight languages, localize and redistribute the information to partners worldwide, online and offline. English-language news stories produced by MSNBC.com's award winning journalists will be translated daily into German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, and Korean for syndication by service providers in more than 100 countries. · The Rivals.com sports network has announced the completion of its online tools to allow newspapers, magazines, and other online media outlets to private-label or co-brand Rivals sports content and team coverage on their individual sites. Rivals has already implemented several of these sites, including one for the Dallas Morning News.

· Haights Cross Communications Inc., an independent educational publisher, announced it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Simon & Schuster, to license the Pimsleur Language Programs. Recorded Books, a wholly owned Haights Cross Communications division, will be the exclusive publisher of the Pimsleur language offerings for the worldwide library and school markets and for international markets, and co-exclusive publisher with Simon & Schuster through downloadable media and mail order.

· GORP.com (Great Outdoor Recreation Pages) announced an agreement with Travelocity.com Inc., a travel website, under which GORP.com will be the exclusive provider of adventure travel packages to Travelocity.com's members. A co-branded GORP.com site will offer select content now available on the GORP.com website, as well as access to GORP's 4,000 adventure travel, dude ranch and wilderness vacations.

· The Knot, an online wedding resource, announced that it has signed an agreement with Yahoo! Shopping to provide specialized content for the site's wedding category.

· Goodman Media Group, publisher of magazines like Log Homes Illustrated and Timber Homes Illustrated, has acquired British Columbia-based Log Home & Timber Frame Expo. Eight major expos are planned for the coming year.

· Journal Register Company Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Robert M. Jelenic announced today the Company's acquisition of The Litchfield County Times, a weekly newspaper based in New Milford, Connecticut, with circulation of approximately 15,000. The acquisition also includes three monthly lifestyle magazines, LCT, The Fairfield County Times and The Westchester County Times, with total monthly distribution of approximately 90,000.

· Prevention magazine and iVillage Inc., a women's online media company, announced a partnership to report on health and wellness issues. As a central resource for this information, iVillage launched a Prevention Center on its health area, iVillageHealth.com. Prevention Center has nutrition news, health articles, supportive message boards and interactive quizzes. The one-year agreement began with the re-launch of Prevention.com on October 1, 2001.

· Safari Books Online, a joint venture between IT publishers O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. and the Pearson Technology Group (PTG), announced the addition of Cisco Press to the Safari Tech Books Online service. More than twenty Cisco Press titles are expected to be available in the Safari service by November 30, 2001.

Launches and Redesigns

· PR Newswire has launched a new global media database service designed. PR Newswire's Online MEDIAtlas is an online research and distribution tool providing data on more than 433,000 journalists and 138,000 media outlets in 172 countries. The company developed its database of newspapers, radio stations and programs, TV stations and programs, consumer magazines and trade publications over the past year through a team of 60 researchers, who update the system daily.

· New search engine SearchHippo represents the combination of a spider based index of the net as well as the quality of sites listed in human edited directories such as the Open Directory. Because the index contains only sites which have been reviewed by an editor, SearchHippo aims to provide a smaller, faster and more manageable index.

Miscellaneous

· FHM, a men's magazine in the United State, will increase its guaranteed rate base from 750,000 to 1,000,000, effective with the January/February 2002 issue. In addition, the magazine will increase its publishing schedule to 11 times a year in calendar year 2002 with one double issue to be published in January/February. The announcement was made by Dana Fields, executive publisher and president.

· Hyperion announced its plans to publish a book by Emmy award-winning ABC News journalist John J. Miller. The Cell, co-authored by crime reporter Michael Stone, will be published in April 2002. In their book Miller and Stone give a blow-by-blow investigation into the terrorist cells involved in the September 11th attacks.

· Sony Online Entertainment announced that EverQuest, an online multiplayer game, will be available as a comic book series later this year. Wildstorm Productions, an imprint of DC Comics, will publish EverQuest comic books, one-shots and graphic novels. The Station is the official provider of EverQuest, with software updates and news about the game, message boards and other community features, as well as a billing system for EverQuest's monthly subscription fee.

· Anvil Studios, Inc. -- a production studio -- announced the acquisition of book rights for two titles by bestselling author Gordon Thomas, Desire and Denial and Mindfield. As part of the transaction, Anvil Publishing (launching with this publishing) is immediately co-publishing another Thomas title, Seeds of Fire: China and the Story Behind the Attack on America, with local publisher Dandelion Books. The printing for this title has begun and distribution is slated for the first two weeks of November.
