Miller, editor-in-chief of PC Magazine, announced the appointment of Stephanie Chang to Executive Editor of PC Magazine. Chang joins Miller and executive editors Ben Gottesman and Stephanie Izarek. Prior to joining PC Magazine, Chang was the founding editor of Access magazine and senior vice president of Access Media Inc. · Primedia, a targeted media company, announced that Maria Arnone has been named the new publisher for Primedia Business Magazine and Media's mining and construction properties. In this position, Ms. Arnone will oversee all sales, business, marketing and editorial initiatives for Primedia's Engineering & Mining Journal, Rock Products, Concrete Products, Coal Age, and International Construction magazines. Ms. Arnone will report to Bob Moraczewski, senior vice president, and will be based in the company's Chicago office. · Nicholas Kristof, associate managing editor responsible for the Sunday editions of The New York Times, has been appointed to a special assignment as columnist for the Op-Ed page during the current international crisis. His column, which will appear on Tuesdays and Fridays, will begin in December and continue through 2002 when he will return to the newsroom. Mr. Kristof, 42, was named an associate managing editor in February 2001. Prior to that Mr. Kristof was a senior writer and national correspondent of The Times, based in New York. · Modern Healthcare announced the promotion of Barbara Kirchheimer to news editor. Kirchheimer, 31, has been a reporter covering investor-owned hospitals for Modern Healthcare since 1999. She replaces David Burda, who was recently named editor of Modern Healthcare. Prior to joining Modern Healthcare, Kirchheimer was a business reporter at the Kalamazoo Gazette, a daily newspaper in Michigan, and a senior Capitol Hill reporter for the weekly tax policy magazine, Tax Notes. · Ned Desmond, editor and president of Business 2.0 magazine, announced that Marlene Saritzky has been appointed communications director of the title. Saritzky will develop strategic communications initiatives for the magazine and website. Saritzky will report directly to Desmond and be based in San Francisco. Saritzky joins Business 2.0 from ICM Breakpoint, where she served as director of marketing and communications. · Richard Christiansen, the Chicago Tribune's chief critic will be retiring in March after covering arts for the newspaper for more than twenty years. Beginning January 14, 2002, Michael Phillips, chief theater critic of the Los Angeles Times since 1999, will become the Tribune's chief theater critic, reviewing major productions and chronicling the growing importance of Chicago's theater scene locally and nationally. Along with Phillips, Chris Jones, a longtime freelance critic for the Tribune, will be joining the staff on January 1, 2002 as a wide-ranging arts/entertainment writer and critic. · The New York Times Company announced that R. Anthony Benten, assistant treasurer, has been named treasurer. Mr. Benten will continue to report to James C. Lessersohn, previously vice president and treasurer, who has been named to the new position of vice president, finance and corporate development. Mr. Lessersohn will report to Leonard P. Forman, the Company's senior vice president who will become CFO upon the retirement of John M. O'Brien at year-end. Both appointments are effective immediately. · LookSmart announced the appointment of Ted West to its board of directors. West is currently CEO of Centerwheel Corporation, an online customer relationship management company which markets developer and customer support systems for technology companies. Digital Publishing · Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company, announced today an agreement with Harvard Business School Publishing to add the Harvard Business Review to its collection of global news and business information. The Harvard Business Review will complement a range of nearly 8,000 world-class business sources including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Le Monde, Financial Times, South China Morning Post and the Dow Jones and Reuters Newswires. Content Deals · Reader's Digest Children's Publishing and Fisher-Price announce the long-term renewal of their publishing agreement effective immediately. Reader's Digest Children's Publishing and Fisher-Price first entered into the agreement in 1997. Reader's Digest Children's Publishing publishes a wide range of formats featuring Fisher-Price properties including: board books, novelty books, and readers starring Rescue Heroes and other Fisher-Price characters. · SAE International and Technipublicaciones Espana, S.L. will jointly publish a Spanish language bimonthly edition of SAE's Automotive Engineering International magazine. The publication, titled Automotive Engineering International - en Espanol will yield six issues per year starting in late November, 2001. · Canon Communications LLC announced that it has acquired Plastics Auxiliaries & Machinery magazine from Tidewater Publication Services Inc., of Tequesta, Fla. The monthly product tabloid, with a BPA-audited circulation of 40,000, provides technical, operational and application information on the primary and secondary plastics processing machinery, auxiliary equipment, systems, controls and components. www.cancom.com · America Online Latin America, Inc. has announced an exclusive online content agreement with The San Juan Star Company, publisher of the San Juan Star, the only newspaper published in both English and Spanish on the Island. America Online Puerto Rico will be the exclusive online home for English and Spanish content from key San Juan Star Company publications including: The San Juan Star and its Spanish language counterpart, El San Juan Star; the daily regional newspapers El Mayaguez Star, El Ponce Star, and El Arecibo Star; the lifestyle magazine, San Juan City; the student newspaper Star Quest; and the only afternoon newspaper in Puerto Rico, El Star Extra. · Reedy River Press, Inc., a publisher of creative and educational media, announced an agreement with America Online, Inc., to develop lesson plans based on AOL's themes via its new print magazine and website, PC Teach It and pcteachit.com. The agreement calls for Reedy River Press to develop lesson plans for the AOL@School educational website. Launches and Redesigns · Customer Communications Group's (CCG) has launced a new website, customer.com. Visitors will find features on channel integration, customer segmentation, data warehousing, customer communications and measurement. The site's CRM case studies highlight Fortune 1000 companies' best practices and CRM successes. There are also archived volumes of CCG's own magazine, StrateScapes, a journal dedicated to the art and science of relationship marketing. · Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. has announced the publication of At Home with Technology, a special interest publication to be poly-bagged with the December issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine. The special issue highlights ways to incorporate technology into everyday living. At Home with Technology will be single-sponsored by the Hewlett-Packard Company and mailed to subscribers beginning in early November. · ``Driven'' is a new weekly feature at Autofieldguide.com, the official website of Automotive Design & Production magazine. Each week, editors review a new vehicle and share their views on the pluses and minuses of these cars and trucks. A total of five reviews will be immediately accessible off the main page of the website, with a new review added each week and the oldest one dropped off and archived. · MarketWatch.com, Inc., an online financial news website, announced the launch of its new ``Market Advisors'' section on its CBS MarketWatch.com and BigCharts.com websites. This new resource provides real-time access to subscription-based newsletters and commentary from several leading 3rd party financial advice publishers. Miscellaneous · World Publications CEO Terry Snow announced a partnership with Boston Ventures Management. World, a producer of special-interest publications and other media products, has sold a minority position to Boston Ventures, a private equity firm specializing in the media, communications and entertainment industries. In its 20-plus-year history, World has launched seven titles and has acquired an additional ten titles. Plans for the next 18 months include new acquisitions, brand extensions and growing existing magazines. Located in Winter Park, Florida, with additional offices in New York City, World publishes 12 special-interest magazines: Saveur, Garden Design, Caribbean Travel & Life, Boating Life, WaterSki, Sport Fishing, Sport Diver, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Kite Boarding, Marlin, Wind Surfing and Wake Boarding. · The New York Times announced it will begin printing its National edition in Ann Arbor, Mich. on November 19 through an agreement with The Ann Arbor News, which opened its new print facility this month.
