· Visible Genetics Inc. (VGI) announced that David A. Galloway, who has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Torstar Corporation since 1988, has joined the Visible Genetics' Board of Directors, replacing Robert Prichard. Dr. Prichard, who is Galloway's designated successor at Torstar, stepped down because of time commitments of his new job.

· Vivendi Universal announced the appointment of Laura Martin as Executive Vice President of Investor Relations and Financial Strategy, effective January 1, 2002. Prior to her appointment as head of Investor Relations at Vivendi Universal, Ms. Martin served as a managing director and senior equity research analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston.

· SBC Communications Inc. has named William M. Daley president. Daley, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, will report directly to SBC's Chairman and CEO Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. As President of SBC, Daley will be responsible for strategic planning, regulatory matters, governmental initiatives, external affairs and international affairs. Daley's appointment by SBC's Board of Directors will be effective Dec. 1, 2001.

Digital Publishing

· Zinio Systems Inc., a developer of digital magazine technology and services, announced it has licensed the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) library from Adobe Systems Incorporated and that it will integrate key components of Adobe PDF into Zinio digital magazine technology. Zinio, which will commercially launch its services in Q1 2002, delivers cover-to-cover digital versions of print magazines.

· Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a provider of handheld electronic reading devices, announced the granting of manufacturing and exclusive distribution rights for its award eBookMan technology to First Convergent Communications Worldwide, Inc. of the Philippines. Franklin has licensed eBookMan technology for manufacture and distribution in the Philippines of handheld eBooks. First Convergent announced that it has selected Pycon Inc., a US-based contract manufacturer with global production facilities including those in the Philippines, to handle the manufacturing aspects of the venture. First Convergent has contracted Alemar's Booklight Inc., a chain of bookstores in the Philippines, as its distribution partner.

· ScreamingMedia and Verizon Wireless announced an agreement to provide Verizon Wireless' digital Mobile Messenger customers with access to current information, powered by ScreamingMedia. Through a technology integration, ScreamingMedia is providing filtered third-party content and data to Verizon Wireless' text messaging service website, vtext.com, which was launched on November 15, 2001.

· Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de, online retailers in the United Kingdom and Germany, have selected Lightning Source Inc. to provide their digital infrastructure and fulfillment services for their newly launched ebook stores for the UK and Germany. Lightning Source currently provides print on demand and digital fulfillment services to Amazon.com in the United States, as well as print on demand services to Amazon.co.uk in the United Kingdom.

· Follett Higher Education Group, a college store operator, announced that later this month it will offer study guides and other ancillary course materials in both Microsoft and Adobe eBook formats. efollett.com opened earlier this year with ebook titles in Microsoft Reader format and announced that it has added thousands of new titles in Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader format as well.

Content Deals

· Penton Media, producers of Internet World events, announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership with The NanoBusiness Alliance to produce a series of conferences, trade shows, and venture capital events focused on the emerging nanotechnology industry, as well as other small technologies. The first event under this partnership, NanoBusiness Spring, will be held at The Roosevelt Hotel, New York City, May 19 - 21, 2002. Future events include a venture capital summit, slated for third quarter 2002.

· The Economist Group and Commonwealth Business Media, Inc. have completed the sale of the assets of the Journal of Commerce Group to Commonwealth. The Economist Group will receive cash and a stake in the Commonwealth business. The Journal of Commerce Group is a supplier of information to trade and transportation industries in the U.S. and internationally. Its activities include magazine and database publishing with associated web sites and directories.

· Monster.com, an online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide Inc., has announced the launch of a co-branded job search site on the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's website Starbulletin.com. The alliance marks Monster's first partnership in the newspaper arena in the U.S.

· Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a licensing agent for text reproduction rights, and Cahners Business Information, a provider of business-to-business information, announced the launch of Rightslink, CCC's digital rights management solution, on Cahners' TVinsite portal with these online publications: Multichannel News, Broadcasting and Cable, and Cablevision.

· Telescan Inc announced plans to merge IndividualInvestor.com and WallStreetCity.com to form a suite of online financial tools and analytics for investors. The newly merged site will be called IndividualInvestor.com at WallStreetCity.

· ebrary, a provider of information distribution and retrieval services, announced that it has signed agreements with two more major publishers, Wiley and The Greenwood Publishing Group, to distribute their titles through online channels. The announcement of the relationships with Wiley and Greenwood add two significant names to ebrary's roster of over 80 publishing partners signed to-date.

· Wolters Kluwer North America has acquired the print and electronic accounting industry products of Strafford Publications, Inc., Atlanta, a provider of specialized information services. The products will become a part of Aspen Publishers, New York City, a provider of legal, business and health care information and a Wolters Kluwer North America company. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Launches and Redesigns

· Founded by educational expert Cheli Cerra, Eduville is a new website offering parents and teachers information, advice, discussion forums, coaching, consulting, and books on educational issues. Downloadable ebooks will be available in the near future. As the Principal At Your Fingertips, Cerra offers guidance with issues ranging from learning disabilities to school safety to getting the best quality education for your child.
