In this new role, Roach, who retains the title of Executive Vice President, will oversee editorial for all magazines; all Martha Stewart books; newspaper columns; radio shows and all internet properties including marthastewart.com. Roach has served as Gardening Editor of Martha Stewart Living magazine and more recently managed the development and execution of marthastewart.com. Martha Stewart Living also announced the appointment of Shelley S. Nandkeolyar to the new position of Executive Vice President, President-Internet/Direct Commerce. Nandkeolyar was previously Vice President of the eCommerce division of Williams-Sonoma, Inc. · Ziff Davis Media Inc. announced the promotion of Dale Strang to Senior Vice President of the company's Game Group. The group publishes video and PC gaming magazines such as Computer Gaming World, Electronic Gaming Monthly, GameNow, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, Pocket Games and its newest launch, Xbox Nation. Strang was previously Vice President of the Ziff Davis Media Game Group. · The Online Publishers Association (OPA) announced that Cox Enterprises, Inc. and Forbes.com have joined as its newest members, expanding its current membership to 17. John Mellott, vice president of business development at Cox Enterprises, and Bill Flatley, vice president and chief advertising officer of Forbes.com, will serve as representatives to OPA. · Jim Spanfeller, president and CEO of Forbes.com announced the appointment of William J. Flatley to vice president, chief advertising officer, with responsibility for all of Forbes.com's advertising sales and sales marketing activities. Flatley, 54, was most recently a consultant to Forbes.com, and was formerly executive vice president at Ziff Davis Media from June 2000 - December 2000. · Knight Ridder Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder announced that John E. Warnock, co-founder and co-chairman of Adobe Systems, Inc., was elected to Knight Ridder's Board of Directors. Warnock, 61, co-founded Adobe in 1982 and remained co-chairman and CEO until his retirement in the fall of 2000. · Bruce Hallett has been named President of Sports Illustrated. He had been President of Time magazine. Hallett succeeds Mike Klingensmith, who became an executive vice president of Time Inc. in June 2001. Eileen Naughton, vice president for investor relations at AOL Time Warner, will be the new President of Time. · Belo announced that Scott L. Baradell has been named vice president/Corporate Communications. Baradell, 36, will report to Dunia A. Shive, executive vice president/Chief Financial Officer, and will be responsible for Belo's corporate branding, public relations, and internal communications activities. · Paul K. Scripps, a sixth generation journalist who for more than 30 years has put into action his family's ancestral love for the newspaper business, will retire Dec. 31 as a newspaper division vice president for The E. W. Scripps Company. Scripps, 56, will continue as a member of the Scripps board of directors and as a trustee of the Scripps Howard Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm. · Onvia.com, Inc., an online business marketplace, announced that the board of directors has promoted Clayton Lewis to president and chief operating officer (COO). Lewis will assume his new roles immediately and be responsible for day-to-day operations. Digital Publishing · iUniverse, a digital publishing infrastructure and services provider, announced that it has chosen Lightning Source Inc. to make its titles available in the UK. · XanEdu, a division of ProQuest Company, and Harvard Business School Publishing have entered a digital content relationship under which Harvard Business School case studies and reprints of Harvard Business Review (HBR) articles will be available through XanEdu's digital CoursePack System. Content Deals · Audible, Inc. a provider of downloadable spoken, announced that it will provide audio content for RealNetworks's RealOne, a resource for digital programming including music, entertainment, sports and news. RealOne subscribers will now have access to portions of audio books by John Grisham, Deepak Chopra, Bill O'Reilly, episodes from the Star Trek audiobook series, and Audible's original program from `sexpert' Susie Bright. · Cytura Corporation, a provider of content management software and services, announced a partnership with Garcia Media, an international online media design firm for newspapers, magazines and corporations. · VIBE magazine, a popular music magazine, has established a partnership with the Uncommon Media Group, Inc., it was announced by Lawrence Gallo, Chief Executive Officer of Uncommon Media. According to the contract, UMGi will develop and distribute interactive CDs to the readers of VIBE magazine, launching with a Q2 2002 issue. After the initial distribution, subscribers of the magazine will receive a collectable UMGi CD bundled with their magazine, with additional CDs coming out monthly or quarterly. · Building on Rainbow Media's MetroChannels and Primedia's New York magazine's existing joint venture relationship which launched newyorkmetro.com, the two companies announced that they will seek to develop and market new video magazine rack offerings serving audiences through Rainbow Media's Mag Rack video-on-demand service. The companies plan to initially focus on creating video-on-demand programming for parenting and automotive enthusiast audiences, leveraging the resources of American Baby, Automobile, Hot Rod and MotorTrend magazines. · Congressional Quarterly Inc. (CQ), a source of information and insight on government, politics and public policy, and Congressional Green Sheets, Inc., a provider of objective analysis of environment, energy and natural resources issues before the U.S. Congress, announced a signed agreement that will bring Congressional Green Sheets' content to CQ.com On Congress, a legislative tracking service. Congressional Green Sheets' five publications -- the Weekly Bulletin, Green Sheets Express (daily), Newsroom (daily), Floor Briefs and Special Reports -- will be available for subscription in searchable, online form and linked to all other CQ.com On Congress services. · Beginning December 31, Talk2DIY, an interactive how-to series on DIY - Do It Yourself Network, will incorporate home improvement reference books and thousands of colorful photographs and illustrations into the show's on-air segments, as well as its online counterpart on DIYnet.com. The new books and images are from the library of Creative Homeowner, a leading publisher of do-it-yourself publications aimed at the homeowner. In return for use of its books and image library, Creative Homeowner will receive on-air promotional credit, mention of individual book titles featured on each episode of Talk2DIY, and a featured link on DIY's website. DIY is part of Scripps category television networks, the architect of Home & Garden Television. · Freedom Magazines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Freedom Communications, Inc. announced the sale of the assets of Freedom Technology Media Group's CRM, Field Force Automation and Knowledge Management magazines and their websites to Line56 Media, publishers of Line56 magazine and Line56.com, for an undisclosed sum. · Scholastic Corporation, a children's publishing company, announced that it has acquired Tom Snyder Productions, a developer and publisher of interactive educational software for $9 million from a subsidiary of Torstar Corporation, the Canadian based publishing company. Included in the purchase is Soup2Nuts, an animated television production arm of the company. · Addison-Wesley, a Pearson Education company announced that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft Corporation and DevelopMentor, a developer training company, to create The Microsoft .NET Development Series. This series of books on .NET will be written by the principal authorities and pioneering developers of the Microsoft .NET technologies. Launches and Redesigns · QTMagazine.com, a publication offering free gay and lesbian travel information, has launched its newly redesigned site in response to user feedback. The monthly magazine format features a different theme each month, articles about a travel destination and beautiful cover art. Now with the site revamp, the site also includes additional features such as daily updates, up-to-the-minute travel packages featured on the home page and improved navigation. · Raven Moon Entertainment, Inc. has unveiled today its new website for Gina D's Kids Club. Parents and Kids can visit the website, learn about the programs, its characters, mail in a ``Kid Vid'', play Tic-Tac-Toe, join the Kids Club, and order products. · The Media Center at the American Press Institute has launched an email newsletter for news-industry executives focused on the future of Internet and multi-platform convergence publishing. NewsFuture provides analysis and data to help media executives make strategic and operational decisions. The December issue includes articles on paid Web content, interactive television, out-of-control news home pages, and online news credibility. Free email subscriptions are available here. Miscellaneous · Wiesner Publishing LLC of Englewood, Colo. has announced that Software Magazine, a field guide for helping IT managers select the software and service partners they need, will publish Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter editions in 2002. The Spring edition is scheduled for March 2002, and the Software 500 issue as the Summer edition. John P. Desmond, president of King Content Co., a partner with Wiesner Publishing on Software Magazine, has been named Publisher and Editor to guide the magazine in its next phase of growth. · Google Inc., developer of Google search engine, has unveiled its Year-End Google Zeitgeist, providing an inside look into the top queries searched on Google during 2001. The Year-End Google Zeitgeist webpage features the 2001 Year in Review Timeline and lists of top search terms. · As a result of the pending contribution of its Entertainment Group to a joint venture with Vivendi Universal, USA Networks, Inc. announced that the company will be renamed USA Interactive. The company's internet commerce group includes HSN.com, ticketmaster.com, Match.com, Hotel Reservations Network, and Expedia (pending). · AssignmentEditor.com CEO and Founder, Jim Lichtenstein, confirmed media reports that the company is for sale.
