Texterity And St. Martin's Launch Electronic Galleys

Posted on January 14, 2002

Texterity, Inc., a provider of epublishing services, announced the availability of its E-Galley service. E-Galley enables publishers to distribute pre-production books to reviewers, bookstores, libraries, and other customers and partners.

Publishers typically distribute galleys, or advanced review copies, to reviewers at magazines and newspapers to help promote their latest titles. This new service uses ebooks to distribute the ``advance reader'' copies, in an attempt to expand the audience beyond the initial print copies sent to reviewers. St. Martin's Press is the first publisher to use E-Galley with the launch of Acrobat, a new book by author Gonzalo Lira. However, many book reviewers may not be ready or willing to review an electronic galley.

The E-Galley service includes conversion of publisher's ready-to-print PDF galley copies into multiple ebook formats, including Microsoft Reader (LIT), MobiPocket, and Adobe eBook PDF. Texterity also provides a private-labeled, hosted site that can be used to register users and provide additional promotional information.

Matthew Baldacci, Director of Marketing for St. Martin's Press stated, ``We're very excited about the potential of e-galleys. While we're continuing to provide the same number of printed galleys that we always have, e-galleys give us an almost no incremental-cost process of getting galleys into the hands of additional store personnel and reviewers who would not have received a galley. For a book like Acrobat -- one that has a read that really delivers -- this is a great way to promote the book and build enthusiasm. We can track downloads and collect feedback, adding a promotional analysis that hasn't been available previously.''

``We are excited to have St. Martin's Press using the E-Galley service and are pleased that they have selected us,'' said Cimarron Buser, Vice President of Marketing for Texterity. ``The E-Galley service provides a completely new use of eBook technology for publishers -- to increase revenue for the print title. We believe that this innovative approach of merchandising the print book with ebook technology will expand the ebook market, and provide an even greater incentive to publishers to move towards electronic publishing.''
