· Ronald L. Sessions, 52, has been named a Senior Editor at Motor Trend magazine, it was announced by Kevin Smith, Editor-in-Chief. Mr. Sessions brings experience and expertise in automotive magazines to the Motor Trend team, and will be playing a central role in planning and executing road tests, comparisons and feature articles.

· Upside Magazine, a monthly business and finance magazine focused on the business of technology, announced the appointment of John Carroll as President and CEO. Mr. Carroll has extensive experience in publishing and especially in technology markets. He has held executive positions at Penton Publishing, Medical Economics Company, and PennWell Corporation.

· Zoom Media Group (ZMG) announced that Fernan Martinez would become President of LOFT and a partner of ZMG effective immediately. Martinez will work with ZMG Chairman and Editor in Chief Isaac Lee in the editorial development of LOFT and will continue the operations of his talent management company Fernan Martinez Communications. Before working as worldwide publicist for Julio Iglesias, Martinez (48) was a journalist working for EL TIEMPO, a newspaper of Colombia. Soon after, Martinez was hired as General Producer for El Show de Cristina with Univision Networks.

· Kenneth A. Bronfin, previously deputy group head of the Hearst Interactive Media group, has been named president of the Hearst Interactive Media division of The Hearst Corporation. The announcement was made by Frank A. Bennack, Jr., president and chief executive officer of The Hearst Corporation. The appointment is effective immediately. Bronfin will assume the duties formerly held by Alfred C. Sikes, who carried out a long-planned departure from active employment with the Company on December 31 to assume a position as a consultant to Hearst in order to devote more time to his charitable work and other interests.

· The New York Times Company has announced that Christian C. Gwinn has been appointed senior vice president of NYT Television, The Times's television production unit. Mr. Gwinn will report to William M. Abrams, president, NYT Television. Mr. Gwinn will be responsible for NYT Television's international distribution, co-productions and the development of international nonfiction programming. He will also continue to work closely on developing and implementing The Times's strategic initiatives in television by working closely with the newsroom and NYT Television. Mr. Gwinn will work out of offices in New York and London.

· San Francisco Chronicle Vice President and Managing Editor Jerry Roberts will be leaving the newspaper, effective March 1. Roberts, 53, joined The Chronicle in 1977, and served as reporter, political editor, political columnist, editorial page editor and city editor before being named managing editor in 1997. A frequent TV commentator on political affairs, Roberts is also the author of a biography of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. No replacement for Roberts was announced. Bronstein has named current Chronicle Senior Editor Narda Zacchino as Assistant Executive Editor and current Chronicle Sunday Editor Kenn Altine as Associate Managing Editor. Zacchino and Altine will assume many of Roberts' responsibilities while the paper conducts a nationwide search for a managing editor.

· Andrew S. Rosen has been named president of Kaplan, Inc., a provider of educational services to individuals, schools and businesses. Kaplan is a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company,. Rosen, 41, previously served as Kaplan's Chief Operating Officer.

· IT media company TechTarget has announced the addition of three senior editorial staffers to Storage, a monthly magazine to debut in March 2002. John Chilson joins as the magazine's managing editor, Rich Friedman as features editor, and Alexandra Barrett as trends editor. The new team joins Editor-in-Chief Mark Schlack, who previously held the position of editor in chief of BYTE Magazine and vice president and editorial director of ITWorld.com.

· Ziff Davis Media Inc. announced that Peter T. Mayer will be joining the company as a Corporate Sales Director. Mayer was most recently Regional Sales Manager for IDG's InfoWorld magazine. In his new position, Mr. Mayer will manage the IBM, Computer Associates, Intel and WorldCom accounts for Ziff Davis Media, as well as develop new business. He will report to Ken Beach, Vice President of Corporate Sales.

· Photo Trade News (PTN), photo/imaging industry journal, announced the promotion of Dan Havlik to editor of the magazine. Mr. Havlik was most recently Managing Editor of Studio Photography & Design (SP&D), another photographic publication that helps to make up Cygnus Business Media's Cygnus Imaging Group.

· CMP Media LLC's Network Computing Magazine announced that Rob Preston will lead the publication as editor in chief. Before joining Network Computing, Preston served as editor-in-chief of InternetWeek.

· Knight Ridder Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder announced that Pat Mitchell, president and CEO of the Public Broadcasting Service, has been elected to the Knight Ridder Board of Directors. Mitchell, 59, has headed PBS since March 2000, the first woman and first producer to oversee the operations of the nation's only noncommercial media enterprise.

Content Deals

· iVillage Inc., a women's media company, and Promotions.com, Inc., a promotion and direct marketing company, announced that iVillage has agreed to acquire Promotions.com through an exchange offer and merger transaction.

· BusinessWeek and USA Today have entered into a partnership to jointly produce and publish editorial features on personal finance and investing. Beginning in April, the two publications will share newsgathering, editorial, marketing and sales resources on joint projects, which will run simultaneously in both publications several times a year. The first joint effort planned under the agreement announced will be a special section focused on "Investing for Growth" and include The BusinessWeek 50, the magazine's annual list of the best-performing companies in the S&P 500. The section will appear in a special issue of BusinessWeek on April 2, with shared editorial content appearing in USA Today's Money section the next day. All future joint editorial features will appear in the full print runs of both BusinessWeek and USA Today.

· The Ohio Art Company and Random House Children's Books announced that they have entered into a licensing agreement granting Random House the rights to publish books in North America based on Ohio Art's Betty Spaghetty doll and friends. Under the terms of the agreement, Random House will publish titles across a wide variety of formats for young readers including coloring and activity books, picturebooks, and novelty books.

Launches and Redesigns

· JLC Online, the popular Web home for The Journal of Light Construction magazine, has been completely upgraded to allow builders and remodelers to research thousands of articles and to access an new professional tools and services. The site, owned by Hanley-Wood, LLC, a media company for the residential building industry, was revamped in February 2002. It now features a searchable database that includes all articles and Q&A topics published by the magazine since its inception in 1986. Hanley-Woods' Remodeling Online, has also been upgraded. Among other features, Remodeling Online now provides remodelers with filtered news feeds from 2,600 national news sources, as well as editorial content from Remodeling magazine and other Hanley-Wood construction industry publications.

· Kanakaris Wireless is launching PocketPCentral.com, which it bills as a new retail and editorial website devoted to everything about Pocket PCs, handheld computing and wireless Internet connectivity. Kanakaris Wireless announced that it is seeking Premier Partnerships with manufacturers of hardware and software, wireless Internet service providers, and content providers for the launch of PocketPCentral.com.

Miscellaneous

· Upper Deck Entertainment has announced exclusive rights to market and distribute the latest Japanese trading card craze, Yu-Gi-Oh!, in North America. Backed by a multi-million dollar marketing campaign, Upper Deck will ship the first edition trading card game to retail stores March 1st.

· The Ziff Davis Media Game Group has announced a media sponsorship of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on May 22-24, 2002 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. As media sponsor, the Ziff Davis Media Game Group will be responsible for publishing the E3 Show Daily, the newspaper published all three days of the show. Editorial Director John Davison and his team of editors from Electronic Gaming Monthly, Official PlayStation Magazine, Computer Gaming World and GameNow will scour the show to provide attendees with stories and news from the show floor.

· Robert De Niro will host "9/11," the exclusive insider's account of the World Trade Center attack from French filmmakers Gedeon and Jules Naudet. The eyewitness story, featuring extraordinary video that has never been broadcast, will be seen in a two-hour CBS Special Presentation, Sunday, March 10 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. De Niro, who has won two Oscars and is a preeminent actor, director and producer living in New York City, is a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Center, which is located just a few city blocks from Ground Zero.
