Apple Jr., chief correspondent for The New York Times, has been appointed associate editor, effective immediately. In his new role, Mr. Apple will continue to be based in Washington and will travel widely to write about the arts, culture and gastronomy, as well as foreign and domestic affairs and politics. Mr. Apple, 67, became chief correspondent of The New York Times in 1997. Previously he served as chief Washington correspondent and Washington bureau chief. · The New York Times Company announced today that Jennifer C. Dolan, executive director of the Forest Products Group, has been named vice president, forest products, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Michael Golden, vice chairman and senior vice president, to whom she will report. · Lee Enterprises has promoted Randy Rickman from general sales manager to general manager of its Nickel Publications operations in the Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Ore., regions. The operations include the Little Nickel, a classified advertising publication based in Lynnwood, Wash., with weekly distribution of 320,000 in the Seattle area. The Portland publication, Nickel Ads, has weekly distribution of 175,000. Rickman succeeds Mario van Dongen, who has left the company. · AltaVista Company, a provider of search services and software and a majority-owned operating company of CMGI, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMGI), has appointed Jeff J. Lehman to the position of senior vice president of Sales and chief revenue officer for its Internet division. Lehman will lead worldwide revenue generation for AltaVista's Internet search division. Most recently Lehman served as a board advisor to numerous technology and marketing companies and as start-up CEO for JustArrive, Inc. · HealthGate Data Corp., a provider and electronic publisher of healthcare information for health-related organizations, announced it has appointed Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, a medical educator and preeminent expert in integrative medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), as its Medical Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Glickman-Simon will oversee HealthGate's intellectual properties in alternative health, including recently-acquired content from The Natural Pharmacist, an electronic resource on complementary and alternative medicine, and will report directly to HealthGate's CEO, Bill Reece. · Time Inc. has named Martha Nelson Managing Editor of People magazine, effective April 1st. Nelson has been Managing Editor of In Style since its inception in 1994. She succeeds Carol Wallace, who at her own request is stepping down after five years as People's top editor. Charla Lawhon will be the new Managing Editor of In Style, where she currently serves as Executive Editor. The announcements were made by Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstine, Editorial Director John Huey, and Corporate Editor Isolde Motley. · Tom McGrath has been named President of the Viacom Entertainment Group's newly formed Paramount Enterprises. He will maintain his position as Executive Vice President of the Viacom Entertainment Group. As a result of restructuring, Mr. McGrath will head-up the newly-created Paramount Enterprises, which is comprised of Paramount Parks, Famous Players Inc., Paramount's other interests in theatrical exhibition which primarily include Paramount's interest in United Cinemas International, Famous Music Publishing, Consumer Products, and Paramount Digital Entertainment. · Ziff Davis Media Inc. announced the promotion of Jason Young to Senior Vice President and General Manager of Ziff Davis Internet. He was formerly Vice President of Internet Sales. He will report directly to Robert F. Callahan, CEO of Ziff Davis Media. In his new role, Mr. Young will now oversee Ziff Davis Media's Internet activities, including sales, marketing, production, business development and technology for the company's websites. These sites include: PCmag.com, ExtremeTech.com, eWEEK.com, SmartBusinessmag.com, Baselinemag.com, CIOInsight.com, TheNetEconomy.com, YIL.com and gamers.com. In addition, he will manage the company's eSeminars business. · Caren Downey recently joined Gardenia Press as Promotions Director. Caren, a Dallas area resident, has a Bachelor of Arts in communications and has worked extensively in the field of public relations and as a freelance writer. She will be responsible for all promotional activities for Gardenia Press, including writing press releases, arranging book signing events and other related responsibilities. · Under the leadership of Michael Cusumano and Sue Petrie, the MIT Sloan Management Review has become an outstanding publication. Sue recently announced her plans to seek new challenges in the field of consulting. The MIT Sloan School of Management will immediately begin a search for her successor as Publisher. Since Michael Cusumano is on sabbatical, Arnoldo Hax has agreed to serve as Faculty Chair to ensure a smooth transition to new leadership. Content Deals · Alaska Air has teamed up with Sasquatch Books, publisher of the award winning Best Places guidebook series, and with AccuWeather to create a new online trip planning resource at www.alaskaair.com. · Light Reading, an information resource for the optical networking industry, announced that it has acquired all assets of Unstrung Inc., a privately held on-line publisher of news and paid research about the wireless market. Under Light Reading's ownership, the Unstrung Website will provide coverage of all layers of the wireless network. The acquisition of Unstrung is the second new wireless venture being announced by Light Reading this week. The company also is launching a new paid research service: Wireless Oracle. Launches and Redesigns · The Principal Financial Group announced the rollout of its new online tool Principal Health News. The new site provides visitors personalized health and wellness information in several categories, including nutrition and fitness; lifestyle and wellness; alternative health; disease and illness; pregnancy and baby; and work and health. Information is also available concerning different life segments, including health content specifically designed for men, women, children and seniors. Principal Health News is available at no cost to all visitors. Principal Health News includes a searchable medical library, self care centers and links to additional resources. Web calculators are also offered to help in determining childhood immunization schedules, daily calorie use, target heart rate and Body Mass Index. · CMP Media's TechWeb Network announced the relaunch of the InternetWeek.com website and newsletter focused on four areas: Supply Chain, Security, Web Development and IT Services. In addition to refocusing the editorial content of the Website, InternetWeek.com will continue to publish its InternetWeek NewsBreak newsletter -- with coverage in the same four core areas -- to its 150,000 subscribers. InternetWeek.com began publication in 1984 as the print magazine Communications Week and, in 1997, the magazine changed its name to InternetWeek. In January 2002, CMP Media ceased publishing the print magazine, shifting editorial and advertising attention to the publication's Website. Miscellaneous · Defense News, a weekly global source for the news and analysis of politics, business and technology of defense is establishing a news bureau in the Middle East and naming veteran defense journalist Riad Kahwaji as bureau chief. · Sierra announced that it has officially changed its name to Sierra Entertainment, Inc. A studio of Vivendi Universal Publishing, Sierra's new name reflects the company's commitment to developing a broad range of entertainment products, including games for both the PC and next-generation consoles. As a 22 year veteran in the game publishing business, Sierra has published King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Hoyle, Space Quest, Half-Life, Tribes, SWAT, and NASCAR. · The parents and sisters of Daniel Pearl have issued a statement expressing their appreciation for the outpouring of support they have received.
