NYSSCPA Financial Journalism Award Winners Announced
The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants
has announced winners for its Excellence in Financial Journalism
Awards to be presented at the Society's Annual Election and
Dinner at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City on Thursday,
May 9. According to Alan Kahn, Chairman of the Society's Public
Relations Committee, 68 entries were submitted for work
produced from January 1 through December 31, 2001.
Winners selected were:
- Business Week, David Henry and Nanette Byrnes for their articles, "The Numbers Game", "Why Earnings are Too Rosy" and "Confused About Earnings?"
- Newsweek, Jane Bryant Quinn for her series of personal finance and money management columns
- Wall Street Journal, Tom Herman for his tax column
- Accounting Today, William Carlino for his article, "Top 100 Most Influential People"
- Bloomberg News, Russell Hubbard, Jim Kennett and Mark Johnson for their wire service report, "El Paso Corp. Secured Off-Balance Sheet Financing"
- SmartMoney.com, Donald Luskin for his entry, "Rising from the Ashes"
- NBR Enterprises/WPBT Miami - Nightly Business Report, Jack Kahn, Erika Miller, Diane Eastabrook and Jeff Yastine for their broadcast, "The NBR Guide to Buying Bonds"
- WBBR Radio (Bloomberg), Peter Schacknow for his report, "Tax Smart Now"
The Society presents Excellence in Financial Journalism
Awards to recognize reporters from the national and local press
who contribute to a better understanding of business topics.
Entries are judged on accuracy and thorough research, the
ability to communicate an understanding of the topic and the
fair and balanced representation of the issue.
The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA)
is the oldest and largest state accounting organization in
the nation and represents nearly 30,000 accountants and CPAs.
Incorporated in 1897, the Society is a nonprofit
organization that seeks to establish and maintain high standards
of integrity, honor, and character among certified public
accountants. Its members are CPAs working in public or private
practice in a state that serves as the home of Wall Street
and major financial centers.
