Dugan previously held the position of executive vice president and managing director for the company. Dugan joined Disney Publishing in 1998 as vice president of business development and strategic planning and was promoted to senior vice president and managing director two years later. · Steven Crofts, formerly Senior Vice President Conferences and Europe, and Gordon Haight, General Manager of Core IT Group, have assumed new, expanded responsibilities as Executive Vice Presidents of 101communications. Crofts oversees The Data Warehousing Institute, E-Gov, Federal Computer Week events, the U.S. Conference Group, all European operations. Haight is responsible for Federal Computer Week, Syllabus and the Core IT publications -- Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine, Application Development Trends and Enterprise Systems -- as well as all of the associated web and e-products. · Amazon.com, Inc. announced that Warren Jenson, Amazon.com's Chief Financial Officer, intends to resign later this year. Mr. Jenson has served as the Company's CFO since September 1999. Mr. Jenson has agreed to continue in his duties for several months and to assist Amazon.com in recruiting his successor. · The Financial Times announced that Lionel Barber will succeed Robert Thomson as the FT's US managing editor. Barber, currently editor of the FT's Continental European edition, will have responsibility for the FT's US edition and all aspects of North American print and online editorial operations. He will take up his post in May. · R.H. Donnelley Corporation, a marketer of yellow pages advertising, announced that Steven M. Blondy, 42, has been appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Blondy was previously Senior Vice President - Corporate Development for Young & Rubicam Inc., a global marketing and communications group. · Reuters, an information, news and technology group, has appointed Thomas Gros as Executive Vice President and Global Head of Commodities and Energy. In this role, Tom, 40, will take control of all aspects of Reuters existing commodities and energy business, which focuses on providing solutions for Reuters pre-trade information and analysis services. Based in Houston, Texas, he reports to Sarah Dunn, President, Reuters Corporates and Media. · Yahoo! Inc., an Internet communications, commerce and media company, announced the appointment of Christine Castro as senior vice president and chief communications officer. An executive with more than twelve years of experience in corporate communications and public relations, Castro previously was vice president, corporate communications at The Walt Disney Company. Castro will be responsible for leading Yahoo!'s worldwide communications efforts, including public and media relations; corporate reputation management; corporate, financial and employee communications; and crisis and issues management. Castro will report to Yahoo! Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Terry Semel. · Cygnus Publishing, a division of Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced that Marianne Stone has joined the company as Publisher of Photographic Processing magazine. The publication is a trade magazine serving industry professionals who purchase equipment, products and services as it relates to image output. · MGM Distribution Co., a unit of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., has appointed Florante Sabado Vice President - National Field Operations for the division. Mr. Sabado will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of field publicity and promotions campaigns for both MGM and United Artists films throughout the U.S. and Canada, and will supervise the planning and execution of all press junkets. He reports to Jamie Geller Hawtof, Senior Vice President - Publicity. · Marie Savard, MD has joined Medical Broadcasting Company (MBC). Dr. Savard will support MBC's Division of Science and Medicine, contribute to strategic consulting, and participate in the planning and development of patient education and continuing medical education programs. She joins Michael Golub, MD, and John DeMaio, MD, in providing MBC's roster of pharmaceutical clients with insight into physician behavior. As part of the MBC Science and Medicine team, Dr. Savard will also work with the company's creative staff in the development of new approaches to meeting professional and consumer education and information needs. · DevX, Inc., a provider of information and services for the corporate IT development community, announced the appointment of Michael "Mac" McCarthy to the newly created position of Vice President, Editorial Director. In this role, Mr. McCarthy will set the editorial and content direction of the site and lead DevX's editorial team. He will also join DevX's Executive Committee. Mr. McCarthy is a longtime editor and publisher of print and Web-based technology magazines. He was founder and publisher and editorial director of Web Publishing Inc. an IDG business unit publishing Web-only technical magazines; he was editor-in-chief of SunWorld Magazine, founding editor-in-chief of IDG Books, and headed the reviews department of computer-industry weekly InfoWorld. · Consumers Union (CU), the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports.org and Consumer Reports magazine, announced the appointment of Jerry Steinbrink to the position of General Manager and Senior Director, New Media. In his new position, Steinbrink will oversee all new media business initiatives for the Multimedia Publishing Division and will report directly to John Sateja. Steinbrink assumes the position previously held by Sateja, who was recently promoted to the newly created position of Vice President of Multimedia Publishing at CU. · Primedia, Inc., a targeted media company, announced that Margery Gladstone, 50, has been appointed the president of the American Baby Group, a division within the Consumer Magazines and Media Group of Primedia. Ms. Gladstone succeeds Darcy Miller, who last year was named president of the Primedia Integrated Sales and Marketing Group (PRISM). Ms. Gladstone was the former president of Primedia's Modern Bride Group, which was recently sold to Conde Nast Publications. In her new post, Ms. Gladstone will focus on the further development of cross-platform sales between the American Baby Group's multiple magazines, television shows, Internet sites and consumer events. She will report directly to John Loughlin, president and CEO of Primedia's Consumer Magazine and Media Group. · Currently in her seventh season with Paramount Domestic Television's Entertainment Tonight, Jann Carl has signed a new, multi-year deal with the entertainment newsmagazine. She becomes primary substitute anchor for Mary Hart and will continue to serve as weekend anchor and correspondent, it was announced by Greg Meidel, president of programming for the Division. · Rob Karwath has been named associate managing editor for business and financial news of the Chicago Tribune. The announcement was made by James O'Shea, managing editor of the newspaper. Karwath first worked at the Tribune in 1985 as a newsroom intern and joined the newspaper the next year as a City Desk reporter. He became the newspaper's political editor in 1994, holding the dual role of Sunday metropolitan editor until 1997. From 1997 to 1999, he was chief of Tribune's northwest suburban news bureau before moving to the business side of the newspaper as general manager. He has served as director of regional development since January 2001. · Dick Robinson, Chairman, CEO and President of Scholastic Inc., announced that Neal Goff has joined the company as President of Scholastic Library Publishing, which includes the reference imprints of Grolier, Grolier Education, Grolier Reference, Grolier On-Line, Children's Press and Franklin Watts. · Michael Eigner, president of Tribune Cable, announced that he is retiring effective May 1, bringing to a close a career that spans more than 35 years in the television industry and more than 16 years with Tribune Company. Eigner will stay on at Tribune Cable until May 1, 2002, to help with the transition to a new management team. He will also continue in a consulting role for Tribune Broadcasting into the future. Digital Publishing · Accumedia announced the release of version 2.5 of its Accumedia Convergence Platform (ACP) for Media, a web services content management and delivery solution specifically developed for the media industry. In January 2002, American Health Consultants, a publisher of health care newsletters and a division of Thomson publishing, selected Accumedia and the ACP for Media to address its Web operations for BioWorld Online. Content Deals · VNU, an international media and information company, announced that its VNU Business Media Europe division has acquired the Spanish publishing house Publicaciones Profesionales SA. The company produces publications and organizes industry events for the advertising and marketing industries. The acquisition includes the weekly Anuncios, the yearbook Los Anuncios del Ano and awards including La Fiesta de la Publicidad. Furthermore, the company owns the website Anuncios Online and the daily newsletter Anuncios Press, with information about the advertising industry. Publicaciones Profesionales was founded in 1980 and employs approximately 25 people. The annual revenues are approximately EUR 3 million. The current management team will continue to lead the company. · Barnes & Noble, Inc., a leading bookseller, announced a strategic partnership with R.R. Bowker, a publisher of bibliographic information, in which Bowker's Books In Print has been designated as a source for Barnes & Noble stores and Barnes & Noble.com of all bibliographic data for North American publishers. In meetings to be scheduled throughout 2002 with individual publishers, Barnes & Noble and Bowker will review how bibliographic information is communicated. The goal is to reduce the effort and expense of all parties involved in the exchange of data, and to improve the sales of publishers' titles through more accurate title information. · EarthLink, an Internet service provider, and Forbes.com, an Internet media company, have reached an agreement to provide EarthLink subscribers with Forbes.com's news, content and portfolio services directly from their EarthLink Personal Start Page. The agreement places Forbes.com content and services across a number of sections on EarthLink's customizable Personal Start Page subscriber portal. As part of the deal, Forbes.com's preferred business news headlines, lifestyle news headlines, and portfolio tracker services will be featured on the EarthLink Start Page and its Finance Channel. · Slate Magazine, an Internet magazine, will provide content to MSNBC.com's opinion section. MSNBC.com Opinion will now be called "Opinions with Slate." · Buy.com, Inc., an online store, announced its partnership with Baker & Taylor (B&T), a premier supplier of books, music, and video to libraries and retail stores, to provide fulfillment services for its entertainment categories including music, books, videos and DVDs. · Crain Communications has teamed with Edmunds.com, a consumer resource for automotive information, to provide additional features to the readers of automotive publications AutoWeek and Automotive News. Launches and Redesigns · Mag Rack, Rainbow Media's video-on-demand (VOD) service, announced that three new VOD niche magazines -- COOK with the PROS, SportsCamp and Modern Parent -- will premiere in March. The addition of these video magazines brings Mag Rack's lineup to a total of 22 specialty categories. · Federal Times is redesigning their weekly newspaper and website. The new Federal Times and FederalTimes.com are improved versions of the newspaper and website. The news and features are packaged in a new format with a contemporary design. The company also says the new Federal Times has better graphics, more visuals and a clean, easy-to-read style. Federal Times was first published March 3, 1965 followed by its online partner in November 1996. Federal Times is published by Army Times Publishing Company, which is a subsidiary of Gannett Co., Inc. · America Online, Inc., an interactive services company, announced the launch of AOL@SCHOOL Version 2.0, which features a teaching tool with a "study kit" for students, a faster, more relevant educational search tool and easier navigation, as well as a customized look-and-feel for each of its six portals -- each designed for a specific grade level. · Primedia's Consumer Magazine and Media Group announced that Soap Opera Weekly has been updated with a complete design upgrade and Soap Opera Digest has also received a major graphic makeover. This initiative follows a year focused on the upgrades of editorial content. The redesign will appear in the March 19 issue of each publication. · Earful of Books, Inc., an audiobooks-only retail chain, announced that listeners can rent more than a thousand audiobook titles at its website. Visitors to Earful's website may choose from h undreds of non-fiction, fiction, literary, and children's audiobook titles to rent for seven, 14, or 30 days. Because Earful is not a publisher, it carries a wide selection of titles from many audiobook publishers. Audiobooks rented from Earful's website arrive by mail with a postage-paid return envelope for renters to send the audiobook back to Earful. Visitors may also purchase titles for their personal libraries. Miscellaneous · This month, the Cheerios franchise kicks off its literacy campaign on over 28 million boxes of Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios, MultiGrain Cheerios and Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, which all offer three free award-winning children's books published by Knopf Delacorte Dell Young Readers Group, a division of Random House Children's Books.
