Journal Register Company Acquires Main Street News

Journal Register Company Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Robert M. Jelenic announced the Company's acquisition of the assets of the Essex, Connecticut-based Hull Publishing, Inc., which includes one weekly newspaper and two annually produced magazines. Main Street News, a 5,000-circulation weekly newspaper, serves Lyme, Old Lyme, Chester, Deep River Essex (including Ivoryton and Centerbrook), Old Saybrook and Westbrook; and two annually produced magazines with total distribution of approximately 20,000, The Newcomer's Guide, a resource guide for new or prospective residents to the Valley Shore area, and The Curious Tourist, a year-round tourist guide to the Lower Connecticut River and Shoreline areas.

Hull Publications, Inc. is a privately held company, which reported total revenues of approximately $600,000 for fiscal year ended May 2001. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Journal Register Company is a leading U.S. newspaper publishing company that owns 23 daily newspapers and 224 non-daily publications. Journal Register Company's Connecticut Cluster consists of five daily newspapers, including the New Haven Register, Connecticut's second largest daily and Sunday newspaper, and 73 non-daily publications with total distribution of approximately 1.7 million. Other Journal Register Company daily operations in Connecticut include The Register Citizen in Torrington, The Herald in New Britain, The Bristol Press, The Middletown Press and the Sunday Herald Press. Journal Register Company's weekly operations in Connecticut include the Litchfield County Times Group, the Bristol-based Imprint Newspapers group, Shore Line Newspapers based in Guilford, Housatonic Publications based in New Milford and Elm City Newspapers based in Milford. The Company also owns Connecticut Magazine.
