· SmartMoney, a joint venture of Hearst Communications, Inc. and Dow Jones & Company, announced that Russ Mitchell will contribute a weekly column on technology investing for SmartMoney Select, a subscription-based website. In his column, titled "Techwise," Mitchell will look over the horizon at developing technologies and impending shifts in the marketplace, and then report back to SmartMoney Select's subscribers with the investment implications. The column will debut on April 7.

· Fashion Wire Daily, a syndicated newswire service dedicated to fashion, beauty, and celebrity style, announced the appointment of Godfrey Deeny as editor-in-chief. Lynn Krominga, CEO of Fashion Wire Daily, made the announcement. Deeny, European editor of Fashion Wire Daily since 1999, has spent nearly 20 years as a journalist covering fashion, beauty, and lifestyle news for Conde Nast, Fairchild Publications, the Associated Press, and Dow Jones. As editor-in-chief of Fashion Wire Daily, Deeny will have the final word on the newswire's content, look, and brand image, and will be responsible for setting the editorial calendar and directing the overall quality of Fashion Wire Daily's coverage. Deeny will lead Fashion Wire Daily's network of reporters and photographers in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Milan. He will continue to oversee the European editorial operation of the newswire. Deeny expects to be permanently based in Fashion Wire Daily's New York headquarters by summer and will frequently travel to each of the newswire's bureaus.

· Cathy Weeden, currently the Vice President & General Manager of Fox Sports Net Arizona, has been named to the same position at Sunshine Network, Florida's largest and leading regional sports network, it was announced by Bob Thompson, president of Sunshine Network and Fox Sports Cable Networks. She succeeds Jim Liberatore, who was named president of Speed Channel in August 2001. Weeden, who will relocate to Sunshine's Orlando headquarters in the next few months, will be responsible for all aspects of the network's ongoing operations including programming, production, advertising sales, marketing and promotions, affiliate relations, media relations and administration.

· Kings Road Entertainment, Inc. reported that Mr. Michael Berresheim has resigned from the Company's Board of Directors and that, in addition, Mr. Berresheim has resigned as President, although he shall still remain a consultant to the Company for an indefinite period of time. A new director, Mr. Wolfgang Stangl, has been appointed to the Board of Directors. Mr. Stangl has been selected for his experience in the area of international finance, which will complement the Company's film, television and multimedia activities. The Company, which was founded in 1984 as an independent film production company, has lately been expanding into other areas of the audio-visual market. Mr. Christian DeFrank, who joined the Company as Chief Operating Officer in May, 2001, has also assumed the position of Company President.

· The Los Angeles Times has appointed Miriam Pawel as assistant managing editor for state and local news, it was announced by Editor John Carroll and Managing Editor Dean Baquet. Pawel had served as California editor for The Times since 2000. Pawel will manage The Times' combined California (formerly Metro) section, Orange County, San Fernando Valley, Ventura and State staffs, and coordinate region-wide beat reporting on major Southern California trends and issues. Prior to joining The Times in 2000, Pawel was assistant managing editor/Long Island for Newsday.

· C. Dean Buckner, M.D., an expert in leukemia and bone marrow transplantation, has assumed the role of Scientific Editor for the new CancerConsultants.com Physician Portal. In addition, Janet Waller, RN, BS, OCN, is the new VP of Operations for the Physician Portal.

· Cox Interactive Media (CIMedia) announced that Michael Burns has been promoted to studio manager of Charlotte city site GoCarolinas.com. The announcement came from Tom Bates, CIMedia vice president of product and marketing. Burns was most recently senior producer for GoCarolinas.com. He joined GoCarolinas.com as a sports producer before being promoted to senior producer in October 2000.

Digital Publishing

· Compaq Computer Corporation announced plans to provide educators with web-based learning tools and ebooks, along with its computers sold to educational institutions around the United States. The company has formed an alliance with Houston- based author, Hariett Fabrick, and Wildflower USA Publishing, to include her web-based educational materials and Furello book series (in electronic-book format) to schools to enhance the overall learning experience for youth. Compaq's website will include a link to the Furello ebook series, along with student workbooks and teacher manuals, including interactive crossword puzzles, word searches, riddles, scrambles, graphic organizers, charts and more.

Content Deals

· Travelocity.com, a travel site on the Web, announced it has reached an agreement to purchase Site59.com, Inc., an online seller of last-minute merchant model air, hotel and rental car inventory. Site59 launched in May 2000 and was developed and backed by iFormation Group, a partnership between The Boston Consulting Group, Goldman Sachs and General Atlantic Partners. Under terms of the deal, Travelocity.com will acquire Site59 for $43 million in cash.

· Fast Company, a business magazine, and TechTV, a 24-hour cable television network focusing on technology, announced "TechTV Presents Fast Company" -- a multi-platform content and sponsorship program launching in the first quarter of 2002 and extending throughout the year. TechTV is airing a succession of video vignettes based on Fast Company content. Each vignette includes a feature segment followed by a sponsor's 30- second commercial. Sponsors also receive advertising space in Fast Company magazine as part of the program. TechTV and Fast Company are producing three sponsored series, each consisting of 12 vignettes.

· FluentMedia, a content-licensing agency of Tribune Media Services (TMS), has added The Wall Street Journal to its roster of information providers. The announcement was made by John Twohey, general manager of FluentMedia. TMS is a subsidiary of Chicago-based Tribune Company. Under an agreement with Dow Jones, FluentMedia will offer current news from the Journal to corporate clients for use on their intranets and extranets.

Launches and Redesigns

· Scholastic, a children's publishing and media company, announced that it will launch Scholastic News presents Clifford, a new magazine for pre-school teachers and children that provides classroom curriculum support and materials. Clifford is the star of the best-selling books with 94 million copies in print, and the animated television series on PBS KIDS. Scholastic News presents Clifford debuts in September for the 2002-2003 school year with a circulation of 200,000. Annual subscriptions are priced at $4.95 per student for 16 issues.

· ElectronicAccountant.com, a website providing news and analysis about the tax and accounting industry, re-launched Monday with a new look and enhanced features. Capitalizing on the site's most popular feature, the daily newswire has been moved to the home page enabling visitors to access the industry's latest stories. Also a weekly survey has been added to gain feedback from those in the profession about issues related to the tax and accounting industry. Each of AMG's sister publications -- Accounting Today, Practical Accountant and Accounting Technology -- now have their own sections on the site, allowing visitors to browse through current and past issues. Also, through a new affiliation with Amazon.com, there is now a bookstore on the site featuring many of the top business titles.

Miscellaneous

· WebSideStory, Inc., a provider of outsourced ebusiness intelligence services, reported that Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 has captured the number two spot among browser versions behind Internet Explorer 5, and is taking significant market share from Netscape. As of March 25, 2002, IE 6's global browser usage share was 30.5 percent, up from 2.4 percent shortly after its initial launch only seven months ago, according to WebSideStory's StatMarket. Meanwhile, Netscape's global usage share has sharply declined. Netscape held steady with about a 12 percent global usage share for more than a year, until the release of IE6, at which point it began dropping precipitously. Netscape's global usage share is currently just over 7 percent.

· Michael Viner and Deborah Raffin, co-presidents of New Millennium Entertainment, and Jessica Kaye, president of The Publishing Mills, have announced that The Publishing Mills audio library will merge into the New Millennium publishing program. The Publishing Mills will continue its own audio publishing program as an imprint of New Millennium Audio. Jessica Kaye will continue to acquire titles for The Publishing Mills through her law firm and literary management company Kaye and Mills. The Publishing Mills has a library of 200 titles in every category; New Millennium Audio has a library of more than 500 titles in every category, including fiction, non-fiction, biography, mystery, thrillers, classics, and children's titles. The merger will make New Millennium Audio one of the world's largest independent audio companies. New Millennium Audio and New Millennium Press are divisions of New Millennium Entertainment. The company is based in Beverly Hills, CA.
