The Ideas section will debut in September. It will be dedicated to cutting-edge thinking on the issues of the day, from new perspectives on the news of the week to reports on cultural, intellectual, and social trends. Star, 34, worked at The New Republic from 1991 through 1994, serving as associate editor and assistant literary editor. He led Lingua Franca from 1994 through its final issue in October, 2001. · Yahoo! Inc. announced the appointment of Daniel Rosensweig, 41, as chief operating officer. Reporting to chairman and chief executive officer, Terry Semel, Rosensweig will oversee the operations of Yahoo! worldwide. Functions reporting to him include product development, marketing, international operations, and North American operations, which encompasses the Company's six business units and advertising sales. Rosensweig will be based in Sunnyvale, Calif., and will assume his duties May 13. · Fashion Wire Daily, a syndicated fashion newswire service, announced the appointment of Jessica Athanasiou as Photography Director. The announcement was made by Lynn Krominga, CEO, Fashion Wire Daily. In her new role, Athanasiou will oversee Fashion Wire Daily's worldwide team of photographers and will be responsible for the coordination, production, and syndication of images taken by the newswire. Previously, Athanasiou was Photo Editor at Talk magazine, where she managed the publication's photography department and produced and coordinated all cover and feature projects. Athanasiou will report to Godfrey Deeny, Editor-in-Chief of Fashion Wire Daily. She succeeds Jennifer Graylock as Photography Director. · Jean-Marie Messier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vivendi Universal, has appointed two new Senior Executive Vice Presidents, Agnes Touraine and Philippe Germond, to work with Eric Licoys, Chief Operating Officer of Vivendi Universal. Both will retain their operational responsibilities for the subsidiaries they head up. Agnes Touraine, who remains Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vivendi Universal Publishing, is named Senior Executive Vice President of Vivendi Universal with responsibility for content in Europe. Philippe Germond remains Chairman of Cegetel Group, Vivendi Telecoms International and Vivendi Universal Net. He is named Senior Executive Vice President of Vivendi Universal with responsibility for technologies and distribution. · Blackboard Inc., an elearning infrastructure company, announced the appointment of Stavros Cademenos to Vice President of International Strategic Development. In his new position at Blackboard, Dr. Cademenos will play a key role in the company's international expansion and is charged with leading efforts related to channel partner development, software localization, publishing and content relationships as well as technology alliances. Dr. Cademenos joins Blackboard Inc. from WebCT, a higher education focused elearning tools company, where he served as Vice President and Managing Director, International. Digital Publishing · Kluwer announced the launch of an ebookstore for academic and research professionals. The site features ebook titles in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) in numerous subject areas, including biology/medical science, chemistry, computer science/electrical engineering, physics/materials science, and social sciences. · Texterity, Inc., a provider of ebook conversion and logistics, announced that it will be providing ebook services for Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a provider of handheld ebooks. Under the agreement, publishing partners can choose to have their TextCafe conversion process create ebooks using the MobiPocket format. Texterity will include automated conversion of TextCafe-generated files into MobiPocket format, and deliver the results automatically as secure files to retail distributors. · babEbook, a customizable web-to-print multimedia baby journal, is a new way to keep track of children's milestone. Users start by selecting from hundreds of suggested starter topics related to a child's first years (such as the date baby first rolled over, or details on their first trip to the zoo). At each step, they can modify a topic to fit their personal experiences or create entirely new questions. By adding photography and audio, parents can incorporate the sights and sounds of life with baby. After parents have told their child's story in their own way, babEbook will custom-publish a hardcover book and accompanying CD-ROM. The new service is the premiere offering of InScribe Publishing, a developer of custom-publishing solutions for memory keeping. Content Deals · MarketWatch.com, Inc., an online source of financial news and information, announced the acquisition of Hulbert Financial Digest (HFD), a publication devoted to tracking and analyzing investment newsletters. Related to the acquisition, MarketWatch.com has launched a new online newsletter center on its flagship financial news site, CBS MarketWatch.com, featuring the Hulbert Financial Digest. The monthly Hulbert Financial Digest is now being offered by paid subscription exclusively at CBS.MarketWatch.com -- in addition to customized reports on specific newsletter sectors. This is MarketWatch.com's first fully owned content offering via paid subscription. · Renaissance Learning, Inc., a leading provider of comprehensive school improvement programs to the K-12 school market, and Weekly Reader Corporation, publisher of Weekly Reader periodicals serving over 11 million school children, announced that quizzes assessing student understanding of Weekly Reader magazines will be available through Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader reading management software. The quizzes will be sold in annual subscriptions starting with the fall semester, and will be electronically delivered to subscribing schools as they receive each issue of the magazines. Launches and Redesigns · IDG.net, a network of technology-specific sites around the world, announced the launch of CIO Briefcase, a new online resource providing chief information officers access to targeted news and information. CIO Briefcase, the result of a collaboration with Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), enables HP to reach thousands of technology professionals with customized information on infrastructure technology issues and solutions. · Sega.com, Inc., a network entertainment company, announced the launch of Sega Mobile, a new division of Sega.com dedicated to bringing Sega gaming to cellular phone and PDA users in North America. Sega Mobile is tapping into Sega's extensive content library launching titles such as Pengo, Flicky, Puyo Puyo, and Monaco GP. Beginning this summer, Sega Mobile will be bringing the title Monkey Ball to wireless devices nationwide. Sega Mobile will round out the launch repertoire of games by publishing new puzzle, sports and entertainment titles. Sega Mobile is led up by Shiratsuchi, a 23-year veteran of the IT industry. Winners will be announced at ConJosé, the 60th World Science Fiction Convention, held in San Jose, California, USA in August, 2002. · Andrea Yates, the Houston mother who drowned her five children and is serving a life sentence for the crimes, will be the subject of a book to be published by Simon & Schuster in 2003. The book, which will take a critical look at the crime, trial, medical, mental health, legal, and religious issues surrounding the tragedy, will be written by investigative reporter Suzanne O'Malley, whose dispatches on the Yates trial appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Salon.com, O, The Oprah Magazine, and on Dateline NBC. Hardcover and paperback rights to the book were acquired jointly by Simon & Schuster and Pocket Books from Morton Janklow and Tina Bennett of Janklow & Nesbit Associates. Simon & Schuster will publish the book in hardcover in 2003; Pocket Books will publish it in a mass market edition approximately a year later. Simon & Schuster's Editorial Director Alice Mayhew will edit the book. · The "Top 10" garden communicators were announced by the Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA) at a press conference at the New York Horticultural Society Library in Manhattan. Five individuals and five companies were awarded a 2002 Garden Globe Award for Best Talent or Best Product for work they produce during the previous year.
