· Slate Magazine, an online magazine funded by Microsoft, announced that Jacob Weisberg will assume the magazine's top editorial post, beginning immediately. Weisberg has been writing and editing for Slate since September 1996. Jacob Weisberg is the author of several books including "In Defense of Government and Bushisms," based on the popular feature in Slate. As Slate's Chief Political Correspondent, Weisberg covered both the 1996 and 2000 presidential campaigns for Slate. Before his tenure with Slate, he worked at Newsweek and the New Republic. Weisberg will begin as Editor immediately and will be based in Slate's New York Bureau.

· USA Today announced the appointment of Carol Stevens as Editorial Page editor effective June 1. Karen Jurgensen, editor of USA Today, made the announcement. Stevens, 46, replaces Brian Gallagher, who was named executive editor last month.

· The Air Force Association (AFA) has named Robert S. Dudney to be the next Editor-in-Chief of Air Force Magazine. Dudney, currently the magazine's Executive Editor, succeeds John T. Correll, who retires today after almost 20 years on staff. Dudney joined the magazine in 1987 as a Senior Editor and became its second-ranking editor in 1989. Before joining Air Force Magazine, he was national security correspondent for US News & World Report. He also has headed the Defense Writers Group in Washington, D.C. since 1979.

· Primedia and its Consumer Magazine and Media Group announced that John Marriott, 38, has been appointed general manager of its Liberty Productions group, a producer of auto shows and a group acquired by Primedia last year from Emap USA. Mr. Marriott will oversee Liberty's business management and will be primarily focused on further solidifying Primedia's leadership in the automotive category. Mr. Marriott will report to Louis Mohn, president of Primedia's Motor Trend Group and he will work closely with Liberty's founder Robert Lilley. Mr. Lilley remains with Liberty as its international auto show director and will continue to be actively engaged in all aspects of Liberty's business.

· Hoover's, Inc. a provider of business information, announced that John Lysinger has joined the company as vice president of enterprise subscription sales. Lysinger brings to Hoover's more than 20 years of experience with such companies as Ingram Micro, Sprint and AT&T. Lysinger will report directly to Jeffrey R. Tarr, chairman and CEO. Joe McWilliams, vice president of advertising sales, will now also report directly to Tarr. McWilliams has been with Hoover's for more than six years. Previous to Hoover's, McWilliams sold advertising for Hart Publications, publishers in the energy industry, with information products serving the oil and gas sectors.

· Playback Media, an elearning content solutions provider, has appointed Dr. Mark R. Edwards as Chief Learning Officer. As Chief Learning Officer, Dr. Edwards is responsible for the design and development of competency based content that is aligned with the training needs of organizations.

· Lori A. Hickok, chief corporate development analyst for The E. W. Scripps Company, has been named vice president and controller for the company, effective June 1. Hickok's appointment continues a relationship with Scripps that dates to 1988 when she was hired as a financial analyst in the corporate finance department. She has been chief analyst for corporate development since January of this year. Prior to that, she served two years as controller for the company's new media operations.

· Scholastic Inc. announced the appointment of Andy Yablin to the newly created position of Vice President Global Logistics reporting to Beth Ford, Senior Vice President of Scholastic Global Operations and Information Technology. Andy Yablin joins Scholastic from his most recent position as Director North American Transportation at the Pepsi Bottling Group. In his new role, Yablin will be working with all of Scholastic's American divisions and International companies to develop and implement logistics strategies that minimize cost and maximize both efficiency and service.

· Spa Finder, a source for spa information and travel reservations, announced it has expanded its executive staff. The appointment of Jose Barreiro as vice president, travel and Scott Caldwell as vice president, business development comes on the heels of a recent round of executive hirings.

Digital Publishing

· GlobalMentor, Inc. and John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced the publication of Graph Theory and Geography, an electronic book that uses animation and user interaction to enhance the learning process. The ebook can be read using GlobalMentor's Mentoract Reader. The work is part of the Wiley Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization, and was written by professors Sandra Arlinghaus, William Arlinghaus, and Frank Harary, renowned experts in the fields of geography and graph theory. Author Sandra Arlinghaus explained that while printed books can only show non-moving graphs, "using an electronic medium allows a human reader to click on portions of a graph, then move sections of the graph, and immediately see the results -- right within the pages of the book."

· Wireless Generation, a new company dedicated to producing handheld technology products for K-12 education, announced anchor publishing partnerships with Wright Group and six other key educational publishers for mCLASS:Reading, its soon to be released observational assessment tool for early reading. Through these publishing partnerships, teachers will be able to use mCLASS:Reading for on-going classroom-based reading assessments with hundreds of leveled readers. The seven anchor mCLASS:Reading publishers are Wright Group, Capstone Press, Compass Point Books, Newbridge Educational Publishing, Pacific Learning, READING A-Z, and Sundance Publishing.

Content Deals

· Easyriders Inc. announced that a sale of all its assets was approved at a hearing held on May 1, 2002 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, San Fernando Valley Division. A bidding process took place before the Bankruptcy Court at the hearing held on May 1, 2002 between Vintage Capital Group, LLC and Paisano Publications, LLC. The Bankruptcy Court concluded that an all cash bid of $12.3 million submitted by Paisano Publications, LLC was the winning bid. Paisano Publications, LLC is wholly owned by former Company chairman Joseph Teresi. The sale of all of the operating assets of Easyriders, Inc. and Paisano Publications, Inc. (collectively the "Debtors") to Paisano Publications, LLC closed on May 2, 2002.

· ConsumerReports.org and Carfax, a provider of vehicle history reports, announced a content distribution agreement. Carfax visitors will be able to access a variety of free Consumer Reports used-car buying advice and information. Additionally, Consumer Reports will be prominently featured on the Carfax.com website.

· Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company, announced an agreement with The Yomiuri Shimbun to add The Yomiuri Shimbun (Japanese language), The Yomiuri Shimbun News Wire (Japanese language) and The Daily Yomiuri (English language) to its collection of global news and business information. Factiva will receive up to 1,000 articles per day from The Yomiuri collection, representing a significant increase in local Japanese language content for Factiva users.

· Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, announced that nine newspapers, including six owned by Media General, Inc., have joined The Wall Street Journal Sunday network. The addition of these papers raises the total circulation of The Wall Street Journal Sunday by 262,000 to 9.6 million. A total of 62 newspapers are now carrying The Wall Street Journal Sunday's branded pages in their Sunday editions. Media General, Inc., based in Richmond, Virginia, has become the third major newspaper group to commit to carrying Sunday Journal under a corporate agreement covering multiple newspaper properties. The other two are Lee Enterprises and five of the 12 daily and 17 weekly Ottaway Newspapers owned by Dow Jones. The six Media General newspapers covered by this initial agreement are Winston-Salem Journal (Sunday circulation: 98,210), Independent Tribune serving Concord and Kannapolis, NC (Sunday circulation: 22,841), Hickory Daily Record (Sunday circulation: 21,531) in Hickory, NC, Statesville Record & Landmark (Sunday circulation: 15,416) in Statesville, NC, Potomac News & Manassas Journal Messenger (Sunday circulation: 19,476) in Woodbridge and Manassas, Virginia and The News Herald serving Morganton, NC (Sunday circulation: 12,332).

Launches and Redesigns

· Hispanic Business Inc., publisher of Hispanic Business magazine, announced that it has teamed up with Garcia Media to modernize the magazine’s look and content. Garcia Media, which won acclaim recently for its redesign of The Wall Street Journal, is a international consulting firm specializing in magazine, newspaper, Web, and corporate communication design. Hispanic Business will unveil its new look -- complete with a new color palette, logo, and other design features -– in its June issue, which also features the Hispanic Business 500, a directory of the nation’s largest Hispanic-owned companies. The new format will also provide greater content integration by linking stories online and in print.

· Security Sales & Integration Magazine has revamped its website. The enhanced site for security industry professionals includes a new design and user-friendly format, as well as more content including security stock information and supplier and association directories.

· Forbes.com announced the launch of the Forbes.com Video Network, featuring "Business View." Four times a business day, anchor Tara Murphy presents executive bulletins, each lasting less than two minutes but packed with the Forbes perspective on the important business and markets news stories of the day. The Forbes.com Video Network also offers links to related headline news, scrolling market indices, industry conference calls, and earnings reports, as well to video content partners, and including the Forbes On Fox "Makers and Breakers" segments.

· Educational Directories ' Unlimited announced the launch of EducationforAdults.com, an online directory of degree completion programs designed for the adult learner.

· America Online announced the launch of AOL Car Care, a new area featuring resources on all aspects of car maintenance and repair, including online and local offline car care products. Available on AOL's Autos Channel and the autos areas of Netscape, CompuServe and AOL.COM., AOL Car Care (Keyword: CarCare) will provide content, features and commerce opportunities covering car-related needs.

Miscellaneous

· HarperCollins Publishers announced that it has acquired Black Sparrow Press' rights to publish three major literary authors - Paul Bowles, Charles Bukowski and John Fante. The deal encompasses 49 backlist books by all three authors, as well as five yet to be published books by Bukowski. The agreement includes world rights for all of the yet to be published books and for the majority of the backlist titles. The books, including novels, short stories and poetry, will be published by Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins. As a result of this deal, Ecco, which was already the publisher of a substantial set of Paul Bowles' works, will now publish the complete works of Bowles and Fante, as well as the main body of work by Bukowski. David Steinberger, President of Corporate Strategy and International for HarperCollins negotiated the deal with John Martin, Founder of Black Sparrow Press.

· The first Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism will be presented to Daniel Pearl in memoriam, and accepted by his family, at the 44th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards on Saturday evening, June 22, 2002, it was announced by L.A. Press Club President Patt Morrison, and Executive Director Alex Ben Block. This new award, created by a unanimous vote of the club's Board, is named for the Wall Street Journal reporter slain while on assignment in Pakistan.

· Nominees competing for The 6th Annual Webby Awards, The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences have been announced. The Academy unveiled the nominees for the best websites in 28 categories, including activism, finance, community, film, travel, personal websites, sports, spirituality, and weird. · North Shore Pictures Entertainment Inc., an entertainment think tank for features and made for TV/cable movies, announced that it has purchased the upcoming novel and screenplay, Waikiki by Peter Kahalani. Waikiki is a novel and screenplay based on the father of Kamehameha the Great, the first king of the Hawaiian Islands.
