The New Yorker received nine nominations and won three awards; The Atlantic Monthly received five nominations and won three awards; Time received five nominations and won one award; Newsweek and Harper's Magazine received four nominations and won one award each; National Geographic Adventure received three nominations and won two awards. Details, Vanity Fair and Vogue received two nominations and won one award each. Winners were presented with an "Ellie," a reproduction of Alexander Calder's stabile, "Elephant," which is ASME's symbol of the award.

The awards honor magazines that consistently have superior execution in carrying out stated editorial objectives, innovative editorial techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise, and imagination and vigor in layout and design; and Internet sites that best use Web technology and design, and feature original content and a distinct editorial identity.

This year's program attracted a near record 1,495 print and online entries. The 97 finalists were chosen by a screening panel composed of 160 editors, art directors, educators and new media experts. The 19 winners were chosen by a separate panel of 75 judges.

Over the years, a number of 2002 award recipients have received multiple awards. The New Yorker has received 34 awards; The Atlantic Monthly has received 16 awards; Harper's Magazine has received 12 awards; National Geographic has received 11 awards (including one for its online magazine); Newsweek and Vanity Fair have received nine awards each; Time has received seven awards; New York has received six awards; Entertainment Weekly has received four awards; National Geographic Adventure and Vogue have received three awards each; and Print Magazine has received two awards.

This fall, Perennial, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, will publish ASME's third anthology of National Magazine Award writing. The Best American Magazine Writing 2002 will include a selection of articles from finalists and winners. The 2002 edition will include an introduction by author Sebastian Junger.
