· Fortune announced that Carrie Welch will take over leadership of the Communications Department as Director of Communications. Welch, formerly the deputy department head, will be responsible for all editorial promotion of the magazine, as well as strategic planning and execution for events, conferences, special projects, media relations, and publishing-side promotion at both Fortune and FSB: Fortune Small Business. Welch is a veteran of several Time Inc. publications, with experience on both editorial and publishing sides of the business.

· Game Informer Magazine announced that Doug Faust has joined the company to direct the publication's advertising sales efforts. Doug comes to Game Informer with over 16 years of sales and management experience in consumer and business-to-business publishing. A veteran of the computer & video game magazine publishing industry, Doug's recent career history includes Vice President GamePro Magazine, published by IDG, as well as Publisher of Next Generation Magazine, PSM (PlayStation Magazine), and Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine for Imagine Media. Mr. Faust will be responsible for increasing Game Informer's profile and presence within the advertising community and will also be involved in positioning the publication for further expansion.

· Giorgio Stock has been named to the newly created position of vice president, global licensing, Disney Publishing Worldwide, it was announced by Deborah Dugan, president of the unit. Stock previously held the position of vice president, global children's book group, for the division. Stock, who is fluent in seven languages, will assume responsibility for pioneering new global partnerships and growing global licensing revenue with licensees across all publishing categories and territories. He will now oversee Disney Publishing's regional teams, dividing his time between Disney Publishing's Paris office and global headquarters in New York City.

· Discovery Communications, Inc. (DCI) and The New York Times Company announced the appointment of Vivian Schiller to be general manager of Discovery Civilization Channel, which the two companies co-own and will jointly develop and re-launch in an agreement announced last month. Schiller comes to this venture from CNN, where she has been responsible for its long-form programming. Schiller, who takes up her new post in early summer, will oversee all programming, management and operational aspects of the network. She will be based in Bethesda, where the channel is headquartered, and will spend time working in New York with The New York Times Company management.

· PennWell Corporation announced the addition of Michael Wolf as Publisher of Lightwave Europe magazine. Mr. Wolf was most recently the International Sales Director-Technology for McGraw-Hill's BusinessWeek magazine. Mr. Wolf has previously held the position of Managing Director-International for Data Communications and tele.com magazines; and has held sales director positions for Telecommunications, Microwave Journal, Journal of Electronic Defense, and Communications magazines.

· CMP Media announced the promotion of Steve Weitzner to chief operating officer and named Jeff Patterson his successor as president of CMP's Electronics Group. Steve Weitzner, former editor, publisher and group president, will oversee the development and implementation of CMP's operating plans, focusing on corporate and group strategies. Jeff Patterson, previously VP/Managing Director of the Electronics Group, has more than twenty years of sales and marketing experience in the electronics industry. Mr. Patterson will be based in CMP's Waltham, MA offices.

· The Chicago Tribune has a new test kitchen director -- long-time food journalist Donna Pierce. Pierce joins the Tribune's award-winning Good Eating staff, where she will do double duty in print and on air: testing and preparing recipes for the Good Eating section, which appears every Wednesday in the Chicago Tribune, and taping weekly segments for CLTV's companion television show, Good Eating, which airs Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays. Pierce is a native of Columbia, Mo., and comes to Chicago from the Columbia Daily Tribune, where she served as food editor. Pierce also is a contributing food editor to Upscale, a national African-American magazine based in Atlanta.

· IDG Games Media Group, publisher of GamePro magazine and GamePro.com, announced key appointments to the company's sales and marketing departments. Greg Fox has been promoted to National Ad Sales Director of GamePro magazine and GamePro.com. He will be responsible for managing the sales team, driving revenue and building strategic partnerships for the GamePro brand. Additionally, Chris Kobran has been promoted to Eastern Ad Sales Director of GamePro magazine and GamePro.com. Chris has been with the company for three years and previously was the East Coast Sales Manager for GamePro. Sherry Pedrin has been promoted to lead the marketing department in her position as Marketing Manager. She joined GamePro over three years ago as a Marketing Specialist.

· Dolan Media Company said it named Patrick Boulay as vice president and publisher of its Finance and Commerce, Inc., unit in the Twin Cities. The promotion puts Boulay, 49, firmly in charge of all Dolan Media newspaper and printing operations in Minnesota. He already is editor and publisher of the St. Paul Legal Ledger. The appointment was announced by James P. Dolan, president and chief executive of Dolan Media, and Samuel B. Spencer, president of the company's Regional Group. Boulay has worked at Finance and Commerce since 1986, when he was hired as its editor, a job he continued to hold after the paper was acquired by Dolan Media in January 1993. He moved to the top job in St. Paul after Dolan Media acquired the Legal Ledger in June 1997. Previously Boulay was the editor of the Minnesota Real Estate Journal in Minneapolis, editor of the Shakopee Valley News, and a reporter and editor with the San Antonio, Texas, Light.

· Cygnus Expositions, the Minnesota-based exposition division of Cygnus Business Media, announced that Ken Romeo has joined the company as Vice President of Operations. In this role, Romeo will be responsible for the overall operations management of its 14 annual trade shows, working closely with the publishing arm of Cygnus to develop strategic partnerships.

· Vivendi Universal announced that, effective immediately, Jay Itzkowitz has been promoted to the position of Senior Vice President of M&A. Mr. Itzkowitz recently joined Vivendi Universal following 10 years in senior positions in various units of The News Corporation Limited. Mr. Itzkowitz will continue to be based in both New York and Paris and will report in this role to Guillaume Hannezo, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He will work closely with Messrs. Hannezo and Jean-Marie Messier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Itzkowitz succeeds Jean-Laurent Nabet, following Mr. Nabet's recent appointment as Directeur General Adjoint of Canal+. Mr. Itzkowitz most recently assisted in the Company's sale of its professional publishing businesses. His immediate focus in his new position will be debt reduction and debt restructuring.

· The McClatchy Company has promoted two editors to new assignments at its newspapers in Minneapolis, MN, and Raleigh, NC. Anders Gyllenhaal, executive editor at The News & Observer in Raleigh, assumes the top editor position at the Star Tribune, serving the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. He replaces Tim McGuire, who is retiring. Melanie Sill, managing editor of The News & Observer, will succeed Gyllenhaal in Raleigh.

· Deryk Van Brunt, DrPH, former chief business officer of the HealthCentral.com, has been named the new CEO of eMedicine.com. He will immediately assume the day to day operations of the company. Van Brunt, who was personally selected by Scott Plantz, MD, the former CEO and co-founder of eMedicine, will also take charge of shaping the future strategic direction of eMedicine. Dr. Plantz has chosen to focus on eMedicine's publishing projects and spend more time on practicing clinical medicine. Dr. Van Brunt is also an assistant clinical professor of health informatics at the University of California at Berkley's School of Public Health where he teaches and conducts research.

Digital Publishing

· Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a provider of handheld electronic books, has signed an agreement to be a handheld distributor of Business - The Ultimate Resource from Bloomsbury Publishing, Plc. The agreement calls for Franklin to make available this business reference for all leading PDA and ebook reading platforms. The handheld ebook version will include more information than its print counterpart and will be released simultaneously with the U.S. and UK print versions. Bloomsbury's print partner in the U.S. is Perseus Publishing. Business - The Ultimate Resource will be published in September 2002.

Content Deals

· VCampus Corporation, a provider of web-based elearning solutions, announced a strategic alliance with Element K, a provider of training solutions for information technology and business skills, that will significantly increase the number of technical courses available to VCampus clients. VCampus now offers over 800 self-paced courses from Element K, covering topics related to computer professionals, office productivity, Cisco internetworking, telecommunications, project management, and design and media. The partnership brings the total number of courses offered through the VCampus library to more than 5,000.

Launches and Redesigns

· The Wall Street Journal Online at WSJ.com, announced that it has bolstered its online offerings by adding two new personal finance columns from Ian McDonald and Terri Cullen. Ian McDonald, formerly of TheStreet.com, is providing a look into the world of fund investing with his column, Fund Fiend. His column puts readers on top of important trends and strategies in the world of mutual fund investing. Terri Cullen, a veteran of The Wall Street Journal Online, recently launched her column, Fiscally Fit. This personal finance column gives readers useful advice on a range of thorny investment issues such as how to save for your kids' college and how to protect yourself from identity theft.

· UPN has revealed its new image campaign and logo design to advertisers and news media attending UPN's 2002 Upfront Presentation at Madison Square Garden in New York City, it was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS, and Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment, UPN. The network's new image campaign, graphic look and logo, which will be used in all of UPN's on-air, print and outdoor marketing and promotional materials, goes into effect this fall in conjunction with the network's 2002-2003 schedule. T The new logo replaces the circle, triangle and square graphics, which have been used since the network launched in 1995.

· EE Times, an electronics industry news source for engineers and technical managers, announced a new weekly editorial section focused on the rapidly emerging semiconductor design and manufacturing market, called Silicon Engineering, scheduled to launch July 1, 2002. EE Times increased coverage in the semiconductor design and manufacturing market marks the end of Integrated System Design, a monthly CMP publication. EE Times is a technology and business newsweekly serving the information needs of more than 160,000 engineers and technical managers.

· BISYS, a national provider of training solutions for the financial services sector, announced its acquisition of Louisiana-based Dalton Publications, a provider of educational materials and training solutions for candidates preparing for the Certified Financial Planners certification examination.

· Scholastic, a children's publishing and media company, announced the expansion of Scholastic Reading Counts!, a computer-based reading motivation and assessment program that boosts reading ability, raises test scores, and helps kids develop a lifelong love of reading. Available to educators in August 2002 (certain series available now), Scholastic Reading Counts! will offer custom-generated, computerized quizzes for commonly used textbook series' including McGraw Hill Reading, Open Court Reading, Scott Foresman Reading, Harcourt Trophies, and Houghton Mifflin Reading. Quizzes will be available for the Student Anthologies, Leveled Readers, and Trade Books series.

· Weblisten.com is launching an Internet subscription for mp3 and wma downloads. The service, which Weblisten.com bills as the cheapest online, has already been implemented in Europe. It is a nine-hour subscription which allows the user to download his/her favorite music from the available catalog. Weblisten.com is a European platform of online music which has been operating in the Internet for more than four years. Its present music catalog has more than 125.000 mp3 and wma titles by the major artists and bands worldwide available for downloading and streaming.
