Krohn has served as Slate's associate publisher since February 1999. Before serving as associate publisher of Slate, Krohn directed the political advertising efforts for the Microsoft Network. Prior to his employment at Microsoft, Krohn produced programs for CNN's Crossfire and Larry King Live. He also worked in the White House for Vice President Dan Quayle in the Office of Administration and Special Projects from 1991-92. · Miramax Films has reached an agreement on a new three year contract extension with Jonathan Burnham, president and Editor-in-Chief of Miramax Books, to continue as head of the company's two-year-old book imprint, it was announced by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. The company's book division, formerly known as Talk Miramax Books, will now be known as Miramax Books. · Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced the promotion of Paul Andrews to Vice President of Interactive. In his new role, he will be charged with driving interactive sales strategies across the company. Cygnus currently owns and manages 70 websites. Mr. Andrews was most recently Vice President of Sales for the company's Firehouse.com web portal. · Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. announced the appointment of Heidi Diamond to the new position of Executive Vice President, President-Television. Ms. Diamond was previously Executive Vice President of AMC Networks. In her new post, Ms. Diamond is responsible for all business aspects of MSO's Television segment, which consists of the nationally syndicated, daily television program, Martha Stewart Living (MSLTV); daily cable programs from Martha's Kitchen on the Food Network, and from Martha's Garden and from Martha's Home on HGTV; periodic network primetime television specials; cable programs in Canada and Japan; and future domestic and international development and distribution. · David E. Garets has joined Houston-based Healthlink as executive vice president. Garets brings more than 25 years experience in information technology management to Healthlink,. Garets most recently served as group vice president for Gartner, an international information technology research and advisory firm, responsible for their healthcare industry research and advisory services. In his new role at Healthlink, Garets will be responsible for leading Healthlink's management consulting and IT strategy groups. · Primedia Inc., a targeted media company, announced it has hired Elizabeth Crow as Executive Vice President and Editorial Director of Primedia's Consumer Magazines and Media Group. Crow, a veteran of Conde Nast Publications, Gruner + Jahr Publishing USA and Rodale, will report to David Ferm, head of Primedia's consumer magazine business. In her new role, Crow will be responsible for the editorial direction of Primedia's portfolio of consumer magazines which include such titles as New York, Seventeen, Motor Trend, and Automobile; as well as the integration of content from those properties across, Internet operations, live events and television programs. · The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. has named Frank Lalli to the new position of Vice President for Development, responsible for expanding the Reader's Digest franchise through print, broadcast and new media projects. Lalli's efforts will build on the strengths of the flagship magazine, which reaches 43 million Americans each month, by creating new magazines, special "one-shot" niche publications, and content agreements with radio, television and Internet partners. Lalli will also work with other divisions in the company to create new publications and services. Lalli previously held a number of executive magazine positions, including Editor-in-Chief of George, where he succeeded founder John F. Kennedy Jr. · Deborah Forte, President of Scholastic Entertainment Inc. (SEI) and Executive Vice President of Scholastic Inc., has announced that Ken Olshansky will join Scholastic Entertainment as the Senior Vice President of Television Programming, effective immediately. In this new position, Mr. Olshansky will oversee the development and production of various Scholastic Entertainment television projects, including international co-productions and the Soup2Nuts production group in Watertown, MA. · Jacques Tortoroli has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of Infinity Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Viacom Inc., and Westwood One, it was announced by John Sykes, Chairman and CEO of Infinity Broadcasting and Joel Hollander, President and CEO of Westwood One. Tortoroli will report both to Sykes and Hollander. The appointment is effective immediately. · Rex Smith has been named editor of the Albany Times Union, publisher David White announced. Smith succeeds Jeff Cohen, who became editor of the Houston Chronicle in May. The newspapers are among 12 dailies owned by The Hearst Corporation. As part of a restructuring of the editorial department, Mary Fran Gleason has been named to the new position of managing editor, reporting to Smith. Smith had been managing editor/news. Gleason had been managing editor/features and sports. Under the new structure, those positions will be combined. Digital Publishing · ASM International, a materials information society, has made its 20-volume ASM Handbook available on a subscription basis through technology from eMeta Corporation's flagship eRights software. Using eRights, ASM International is able to offer its members yearly, unlimited access to the entire handbook collection for $179 - roughly the average cost of purchasing a single hardcover volume. Content Deals · Alloy, Inc., a Generation Y-focused media and direct marketing company, announced it has acquired MPM Holding Inc., whose sole operating asset is Market Place Media, a media placement and promotions company serving the college, multi-cultural and military markets. Alloy has paid $48 million in cash to complete the acquisition. MPM is a media placement and promotions company that reaches youth-oriented markets primarily through market-specific newspapers, community dailies, magazines and radio stations. · CCNMatthews, a Canada-based news distribution companies, announced the acquisition of the operations and newswire distribution business of e-News Services from BCE Emergis. CCNMatthews will now serve approximately 40 per cent of the total news distribution market in Canada and 50 per cent of the news distribution market for publicly traded companies. · American Achievement Corporation, Inc. of Austin, TX, a provider of class rings and school year books, announced the acquisition of a Philadelphia-area firm, Milestone Traditions, a specialty marketer of class rings and other graduation products to the college market. Launches and Redesigns · Rink Magazine and Reed Exhibitions have formed a partnership to present the North American RINK Conference and Expo (NARCE) to be held in Chicago, May 12-15, 2003. Conference programming will be coordinated and provided by serving the American Rinks and the US Figure Skating Association Basic Skills Program. · CyberEdge Information Services, Inc. announced the launch of its new website for virtual reality (VR) industry professionals and students. The site, CyberEdge On-Line, includes articles on VR and it's applications, technology, and impact. There are also reviews of VR books, several targeted bibliographies, the VR Lexicon, the Dictionary of Acronyms, and other features. · Nando Media has launched the New York Daily News Online Edition on its Digital Workbench publishing system. Under a three-year agreement, Nando Media will provide the Daily News with its content management solution, server hardware and system support. During a 15-week transition and working with Nando's technical support team, the Daily News completed its first major redesign in several years and launched the new site using Nando's template-driven design tools. · Universal Music Publishing Group, a music publishing company, has unveiled a new website -- universalmusicpublishing.com -- geared to showcase highlights of the company's song catalog and international roster of recording artists and songwriters. The website features hundreds of spotlight pages, which offer biographies, audio and video clips, links to labels and artists sites, as well as licensing information. · NYTimes.com announced that it is launching a destination at NYTimes.com/multimedia where users can access the full range of the website's multimedia features. This new section will be a showcase for exclusive streaming video and audio content, slide shows, and creative interactive features that are produced by NYTimes.com, often in conjunction with New York Times print features. · Space Holding Corp. announced the relaunch of Space.com, an online space resource and space news provider. Celebrating its third anniversary, the redesigned website provides space news, human space flight, science and astronomy, technology, and space images. New features include a headline news ticker, enhanced website search capabilities, and straightforward website navigation. Space.com also relaunched its online broadband channel, Space.com TV, providing seven new channels of streaming original programming. Miscellaneous · HarperCollins Publishers announced that it has acquired world English language rights to publish journalist Nina Munk's book about the controversial media conglomerate AOL Time Warner. The new book will be published under the HarperBusiness imprint in 2004. Marion Maneker, the Editorial Director of HarperBusiness, negotiated the deal with Munk's agent, Elyse Cheney, of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, INC. Nina Munk is a freelance magazine writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Fortune, Forbes, and The New Yorker. Prior to that, she was a Senior Writer at Fortune and a Senior Editor at Forbes. · Ingram Book Group has entered into a new bibliographic data alliance with Whitaker Information Services of the UK to access a data source that addresses the international data market for global products. In addition to enhancing the services Ingram provides US customers, the alliance heightens Ingram's profile worldwide by providing Whitaker customers with Ingram's US book information on international versions of Whitaker's bibliographic products. Whitaker will deploy Ingram's data on their Book Bank global CD-ROMs and DVD, their SourceData Global raw data feed, and the web services: LibWeb and Whitaker Web.
