· AOL Time Warner Inc. announced that Jonathan F. Miller, formerly President and CEO of USA Interactive's USA Information and Services (USAIS), has been named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of its America Online, Inc. division. Mr. Miller, 45, will be responsible for all of America Online's businesses, including the flagship AOL service, and will report to Don Logan, Chairman of AOL Time Warner's Media & Communications Group.

· Neil Amdur, sports editor of The New York Times since 1990, has been appointed senior editor for staffing/national recruiting. Howell Raines, executive editor, announced the appointment yesterday and said Mr. Amdur's assignment was to identify reporting and editing candidates for all sections of The Times. He said Mr. Amdur would oversee a search for his own successor, both inside and outside the staff, before assuming the new post later this year.

· The Reader's Digest Association announced Dawn Zier as Vice President and Circulation Director for Reader's Digest, the largest paid circulation magazine in the United States. Zier is responsible for marketing, fulfillment, planning and managing the circulation of the company's special interest magazines including The Family Handyman, American Woodworker, Selecciones, and Reader's Digest Large Print. She will report to Eric Schrier, Senior Vice President & Global Editor-in-Chief and President, U.S. Magazines.

· Commonwealth Business Media, Inc. announced the promotions of Tracy Winters and Cynthia Cronin to the positions of Associate Publisher/Sales Manager. Winters will assume responsibility for JoC Week and Shipping Digest, while Cronin will be responsible for Gulf Shipper and The Florida Shipper. As Senior Advertising Managers, Cronin and Winters were instrumental in creating marketing strategies for the magazines and helped develop and launch websites for JoC Week, Shipping Digest, The Florida Shipper, and Gulf Shipper. Both Cindy Cronin and Tracy Winters will report to Commonwealth Business Media's Chairman, President and CEO, Alan Glass. Cronin will work out of the company's Miami, FL location. Winters will work out of the company's Newark, NJ location.

· Washington Techway, a newsmagazine for the nation's technology capital, has hired Joel Goron as Maryland Sales Director. Most recently, Goron served as Senior Account Manager for Plan B Technologies, a network systems integrator. Prior to his position with Plan B Technologies, Goron served for four years as Regional Sales Manager of Phillips Business Information in Potomac, MD.

· Latina magazine has named David Kahn its publisher. In this position, he will oversee and develop strategies for the magazine's advertising sales and corporate marketing efforts. Kahn joins Latina from The New Yorker, where he served as publisher and previous to that, associate publisher.

· Financial Planning, a publication for independent financial advisers and money managers, has named Eric Garland as its new editor-in-chief. Mr. Garland worked as editorial director of Adweek, before moving on to Time, Inc.'s Money magazine. Financial Planning has also added a new managing editor to its editorial team. The new managing editor, Pat Durner, has previously worked for several other Thomson publications. Ms. Durner was editor of Bank Investment Marketing and editor and publisher of Mutual Fund Market News, Annuity Market News and Investment Management Weekly.

· Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc., a developer of handheld electronic books, announced that Kurt A. Goszyk has been elected to the office of Vice President, Engineering, Chief Technology Officer of the Company effective August 12, 2002. Goszyk was Vice President, Engineering of Franklin from 1984 through 1987. Most recently he was President of Cyberscan Technologies, Inc., a developer of advanced computer peripheral devices related to optical motion tracking and measurement, eye gaze input, and scanning.

· E. John Wolfzorn, treasurer for The E. W. Scripps Company, will be taking on an expanded financial management role as a vice president of the corporation. Wolfzorn, 56, will be working more closely with the company's pension fund investment managers, assuming one of the responsibilities previously held by the company's former chief financial officer, Daniel J. Castellini, who retired in May. Scripps has also named Vikki C. Neil as director of online marketing for Scripps newspapers. Effective Aug. 30. Neil, 29, rejoins The E.W. Scripps Company after spending the previous year as the Internet advertising manager for The St. Petersburg Times.

· Judy L. Hu, has been named General Manager for Corporate Advertising and Marketing Communications for General Electric. Hu will join GE August 22 from General Motors, where she has served most recently as the Executive Director, Diversity and Growth Markets. At GE, Hu will report to Beth Comstock, Corporate Vice President of Communications. Hu replaces Richard Costello who will depart GE in September to begin a brand and research consultancy, with GE serving as one of his clients. In her new position, Hu will be responsible for directing advertising, branding and marketing communications for GE. She is charged with developing strategies to strengthen and position the GE brand globally. Working closely with all of GE's business units, Hu will be responsible for managing consistency of the GE brand message and for driving leadership of GE's marketing communications function throughout the Company.

· VCampus Corporation, a provider of web-based elearning solutions, announced that the company has named Kathleen Keating Hanafan as Vice President, Commercial and Higher Education Sales and Marketing. Prior to joining VCampus, Hanafan was Vice President, Core Commercial Services, at Dallas-based Primedia Workplace Learning Solutions, an elearning company and subsidiary of Primedia Corp.

· Borders Group, Inc. has named John Campradt to the position of Managing Director, Borders Pacific Rim. Vin Altruda, president of Borders International Stores, made the announcement. Campradt's most recent post was as Regional Manager for Woolworths Ltd.

· Adobe Systems Incorporated, a provider of network publishing software, announced the appointment of Ivan Koon to the new position of senior vice president of Adobe's ePaper Business unit. Koon will report to Shantanu Narayen, executive vice president of Worldwide Products. Koon comes to Adobe from his most recent role as president of the New Technologies Division at BEA Systems in San Jose, Calif. At Adobe, Koon will be chartered with building on Adobe's current Acrobat business.

Digital Publishing

· Questia Media announced that it has launched a monthly list of the books most frequently used on Questia, an online library of books. The first installment of the list reveals the top 20 accessed titles for July 2002 out of Questia's collection of more than 70,000 books and journal articles spanning a broad range of subjects in the social sciences, history, and the arts, among others. The list will be published on a monthly basis at www.Top20eBooks.com.

· International Typeface Corporation has released the ITC eBook Font Pack for both the Palm OS and Pocket PC versions of the Palm Reader Pro software. ITC Charter, ITC Kabel and ITC Officina Sans comprise the typefaces in the newly available pack. The Palm OS version of the pack includes five sizes for each bitmapped font, while the Pocket PC version includes a scalable TrueType font for each type style. Palm Reader Pro users have the option of displaying their ebooks in different font styles and sizes based on their personal preference and the resolution of their handheld devices.

· Technology Review, MIT's magazine of innovation, announced the availability of digital subscriptions to its publication. Now available at technologyreview.com, the electronic version offers readers exact digital replicas of the magazine delivered to their desktops. As part of the launch, Technology Review also announced a partnership with Zinio Systems, Inc., a provider of software applications and services that enable the digital creation and delivery of magazines. The two companies launched a beta of Technology Review's digital subscriptions in early June, resulting in 600 new Technology Review subscription orders in fewer than three days.

· The Open eBook Forum has announced Open an eBook Week -- seven days of counts on ebooks, a host of new electronic title introductions and other special promotions, running from August 5th through the 11th. Information and links to the many special offers including ebooks from best-selling authors can be found at openanebook.org. The Open eBook Forum is a non-profit international industry trade and standards organization comprised of leading for-profit international publishers, distributors and technology companies that champion electronic books as a convenient and exciting platform for reading.

Content Deals

· Alloy, Inc., a generation Y-focused media and marketing company, announced that it has acquired substantially all of Youthstream Media Networks, Inc.'s high school and college targeted marketing and media assets. This includes over 20,000 out-of-home display media boards in high schools and on college campuses, media placement capabilities in college and high school newspapers, and event marketing services and contracts. Alloy paid $7 million in cash to complete the acquisition.

· Prima Games, a division of Random House Inc. and a strategy guide publisher, announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with Namco to write, publish and distribute strategy guides for Tekken4 for PlayStation2 computer entertainment system and Dead to Rights for the Xbox gaming system in North America. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

· DAG Media Inc. announced it has purchased the business and assets of The Blackbook from Brandera.com, Inc. The Blackbook is a publisher of photography and illustration directories that act as a reference source for finding creative photographers, illustrators and graphic designers in North America. The books display works and portfolios of commercial artists in high-end quality, full color prints. The Blackbook is used by more than 40,000 art directors, creative directors, designers and corporations to find the creative talent they need. DAG Media publishes and distributes three yellow page directories in print and online and operates a portal website at newyellow.com.

Launches and Redesigns

· LentilHealth.com, a new health news resource powered by moreover.com, provides health news from over 2000 online publications, updating as often as every 15 minutes. New publications are added daily to their database.

· Wisdom Digital Media, a developer of interactive business and entertainment websites, and The Barbra File, a bimonthly newsletter, announced the launch of BarbraFile.com, a new website dedicated to the career of Barbra Streisand. Features on BarbraFile.com include a complete annotated Barbra discography, videography and book guide with photos, award notes, video and audio clips, fan ratings and reviews, a song-search database, interactive quizzes, fan surveys, comprehensive facts and data about Barbra in statistics and archived magazine articles, the "Barbra Top Ten" and an online store.

· Automation Alley announced that Michigan Technology News.Com and Motor City Interactive will develop a monthly statewide newsletter for glima, Automation Alley's Association for Interactive Professionals. Michigan Technology News.Com will produce the content; Motor City Interactive will create and distribute the newsletter for glima chapters in Pontiac, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and up to a dozen other cities. The first newsletter will be published Aug. 27 and then on the fourth Tuesday of every month after that.

Miscellaneous

· Total magazine advertising revenue for the month of July increased 8.6% compared to July of last year, closing at $1,129,948,932, according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB). Ad pages for July totaled 15,125, up 0.5% from last year. Year-to-date, advertising revenue closed at $8,832,741,748, a decrease of 0.3%, and ad pages were 120,607, down 8.6% over the same time period last year.

· INT Media Group is preparing to change its name to Jupitermedia Corporation. Jupiter Research, a research advisory organization specializing in business and technology market research, and Jupiter Events, were acquired by INT Media Group, Inc. on July 31, 2002. Jupiter is relocating to a new headquarters, occupying the entire 16,000 square foot fourth floor at 475 Park Avenue South in New York City. Jupiter Research will occupy the new space as of Monday, August 12.

· New York Times Digital, the digital business unit of The New York Times Company, and Google, developer of the award-winning Google search engine, announced that Google's targeted Web search results and sponsored links will be integrated into NYTimes.com and Boston.com search results. Available now on NYTimes.com, Google's search technology will be accessible to Boston.com users in the fall. When a user conducts a search on NYTimes.com, a page of article results is generated with links to current and archived articles. Google's search results will appear below these NYTimes.com links. Google's sponsored links will also appear in the search results.

· After a year off, New York is Book Country returns to New York City with the 24th annual New York Is Book Country (NYIBC) festival, September 25 - 29, 2002, co-sponsored by The New York Times. More than 175 activities will take place citywide, including author talks, readings, workshops, panel discussions, and performances.
