· David Ferm, President of Primedia's Consumer Magazine and Media Group, a targeted media company, announced the creation of the Primedia Consumer Automotive Group. The new unit brings together Motor Trend, Automobile, and Liberty Productions. As part of the announcement, Lou Mohn, previously the president of the Motor Trend Group, has been named President of the new unit, and David Forgione, formerly the Publisher of Automobile Magazine, will become the Group Publisher of both Automobile and Motor Trend. Other personnel changes include the naming of Steve Rousseau to the position of Advertising Director for the Automotive Group and Ralph Allora's appointment as Marketing Director for the Group.

· Philadelphia Magazine Publisher David Lipson announced a change in editorial leadership at the publication, naming Larry Platt as Editor-in-Chief to succeed previous editor Loren Feldman. Platt will assume the editor's chair September 9. Previously Editor-at-Large, Platt has been affiliated with Philadelphia Magazine for ten years, writing pieces on sports, politics, media and business. Platt's latest book, Crossover: Allen Iverson's American Dream, (Regan Books) is scheduled for publication on October 25, 2002.

· Ziff Davis Media Inc. announced the appointment of Jim Louderback as Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of Ziff Davis Internet. He will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing Ziff Davis Media's online editorial content, including online brands such as ExtremeTech and Microsoft Watch; and working with the editorial teams of the company's print products on related online sites, including pcmag.com and eweek.com. He'll report to Michael J. Miller, Editor-in-Chief of PC Magazine and Executive Vice President and Editorial Director of Ziff Davis Media, and Jason Young, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Ziff Davis Internet. Louderback, a Ziff Davis, Inc. veteran, will rejoin the company on August 19. Louderback launched the editorial programming for TechTV (formerly ZDTV) and developed PC Week Labs (now Eweek Labs).

· Carl Walworth, 41, has been appointed publisher/editor of the Mattoon Journal Gazette and Charleston Times-Courier. The announcement was made by Linda Lindus, Lee Enterprises group publisher for central and southern Illinois. Walworth has been employed by the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier for 17 years.

· The Hartcourt Companies, Inc. announced that its Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Dr. Wallace Ching as its CEO, and has appointed Mr. David Chen, its President, to be Acting CEO, while searching for the right candidate. Previously, Mr. Chen served as President of Sinobull Media, and Executive Vice President of Hartcourt Capital. His past experiences included Regional Advertising Director for Turner Broadcasting TBS International and Regional Marketing Director for CNN International, both AOL Time Warner companies. Other experiences included Managing Director of HelloAsia (recently acquired by Brience Inc.), CEO of V2 Technology and Business Development Manager of Management Publishing Group.

· The Board of Directors of Freedom Communications Inc. announced the appointment of Alan J. Bell as President and Chief Executive Officer. Bell joined Freedom in 1989 and most recently served as President of Freedom's Broadcasting Division, responsible for the company's eight network affiliates. He was also responsible for OCN, Orange County NewsChannel, which the company launched in 1990.

· Beth Laski has joined Universal Pictures as Senior Vice President, Media Relations, it was announced by Eddie Egan, Co-President, Universal Pictures Marketing. Ms. Laski's appointment is the final part of a strategic restructuring of the company's publicity department, which included promotions for Jeffrey Sakson, Stephanie Kluft, Michael Moses and Greg Sucherman. In her newly created position, Ms. Laski will serve as the chief liaison between Universal Pictures' senior management and journalists representing the national consumer press and industry trade publications. She will report directly to Mr. Egan.

· Palm Digital Media Director of Business Development Mike Segroves has been elected to the Open eBook Forum board of directors. The announcement was made by Open eBook Forum Executive Director Nick Bogaty.

Digital Publishing

· Windows & .NET Magazine, part of Penton Media has launched a new digital bookstore for the sale of Windows IT Technical Manuals. In addition to technical manuals published by the magazine, the site offers programming guides from leading IT publishers, including John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Complete hosting and digital rights management (DRM) services for the eBookstore is provided by OverDrive, Inc.

Content Deals

· San Diego Soccer Development Corp., dba Soccer Development of America (SDA), announced it has reached an agreement with Soccer Post, Inc. to market and distribute 90:00 Minutes Soccer Magazine in all 23 of their retail outlets nationwide. 90:00 Minutes Soccer Magazine is a monthly publication featuring photos, profiles and stories devoted to professional soccer worldwide.

· An alliance between MSNBC.com, the MSN network, and weather.com, provides users of MSNBC.com and MSN in the United States with weather information and statistics -- and will soon offer weather alerts and forecasts. Under the agreement, weather.com provides MSNBC.com and MSN with current conditions and five-day forecasts, along with links to additional weather information such as air quality and forecasts specifically for travel, golf, boating and beach, home and garden and skiing.

· Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced it has acquired AS3, the Aviation Services and Suppliers Super Show from The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) and The Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA). Both associations will remain as sponsors and advisors to the event. The AS3 show acquisition follows the acquisition of GSE International Expo, an aviation industry event dedicated exclusively to ground support equipment, services and solutions that was acquired by Cygnus 10 months ago.

· Infragistics, a publisher of reusable presentation layer components, announced that Dean Guida, CEO of Infragistics, has been named as a member of the Editorial Board of .NET Developer's Journal, a soon-to-be launched publication from SYS-CON Media, publishers of i-technology print magazines and Web portals.

Launches and Redesigns

· McGraw-Hill Professional, a division of McGraw-Hill Education, announced the release of AccessLANGE, a subscription-based online resource that combines LANGE's (McGraw-Hill's medical resources for on-going study, review, And reference) resources with the Internet. Along with offering the full content of ten LANGE Basic Science titles, AccessLANGE features hundreds of case studies, self-assessment questions, charts, tables, and diagrams that facilitate study for all levels of the USMLE, course review, and clinical rotation.

· Pearson, an educational publisher, announced that its Learning Network will return to its roots as Family Education Network (FEN). Family Education Network receives over 165 million unique visitors annually. FEN was created to provide a broad range of educational content, tools and support for teachers, as well as a wealth of age-appropriate learning tools and activities to motivate and encourage students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. FEN also includes activities and ideas to more fully involve parents in their children's educational lives.

· The New York Times Magazine has announced five new editorial features, which are listed below.
  • "Portfolio" is the magazine's new photography feature. "Portfolio" debuts September 22 and will appear on a regular basis. Portfolio will regularly feature a 10-page "art gallery," with portraiture, landscape and photojournalism.
  • On September 8, another new feature, "Diagnosis," delves into real life medical puzzles, with a physician taking readers through the process of diagnosing and treating a specific ailment.
  • On September 15, "Page Turner" introduces readers to today's young, artistic talent as they ascend into stardom via movies, television, books, art, music and theater. "Page Turner" refers to the section's format: a text-driven description designed to entice readers to turn the page for the accompanying photo.
  • On September 22, the magazine presents "Crash Course," its own version of an adult education primer, with the best available thinking from leading academics on hot subjects in the news.
  • And next year, "Domains" will offer a glimpse into otherwise off-limits' quarters, showing how people in the news -- from figures in entertainment to sports, from politics to business -- live their lives, making the private public.
Miscellaneous

· Source Interlink Companies, a provider of magazine information and front-end sales data, announced its direct-to-retail magazine distribution division, International Periodical Distributors (IPD), has been appointed the exclusive supplier of magazines to Barnes & Noble College Bookstores. IPD distributes more than 5,000 publications to more than 8,000 retail stores throughout North America. Barnes & Noble College Bookstores independently manages and operates over 400 campus bookstores on behalf of colleges and universities across the United States. Under the agreement, IPD will distribute a select list of titles customized for the 18-24 year old demographic market, the primary consumer in college bookstores.

· Salon Media Group, Inc., received notice from NASDAQ that its common stock will continue to be listed on The NASDAQ SmallCap Market via an exception from both the bid price and market value of publicly held shares requirements. While Salon Media Group, Inc. did not satisfy the bid price requirement on August 13, 2002 and failed to satisfy the $1,000,000 of publicly held shares requirement for the 30 consecutive trading days ended August 9, 2002, the temporary listing was continued subject to Salon meeting certain conditions. On or before November 11, 2002, the company must satisfy the market value of publicly held shares requirement and immediately thereafter evidence compliance for a minimum of ten consecutive trading days. In addition, on or before February 10, 2003, the company must demonstrate a closing bid price of $1.00 per share and immediately thereafter evidence compliance for a minimum of ten consecutive trading days. In the event the Company is deemed to have met the terms of this exception, it shall continue to be listed on The NASDAQ SmallCap Market. The Company believes it can meet these conditions, however, there can be no assurance it will do so. Salon intends to seek shareholder approval of a range of possible reverse stock splits. If at some future date the Company's securities should cease to be listed on The NASDAQ SmallCap Market, they may continue to trade on the OTC-Bulletin Board. For the duration of any grace period, the Company's NASDAQ symbol will continue to be SALNC.

· Bacon's Information Inc., a provider of media monitoring services and media databases, announced that it has acquired the assets of Media Pulse, Inc., a broadcast monitoring provider headquartered in St. Louis. Bacon's is a division of Observer AB, a Stockholm, Sweden-based provider of media and market monitoring and analysis for professionals in public relations and investor relations. Observer has operations in thirteen countries and established a North America presence in 2001 with the acquisition of Bacon's and Bowdens, serving the US and Canadian markets.
