· AOL Time Warner Inc. announced the appointment of Michael J. Kelly, the founder and CEO of American Town Network and a former publisher of Entertainment Weekly magazine, as AOL Time Warner's president, global marketing solutions. Reporting to Don Logan, chairman of AOL Time Warner's Media & Communications Group, Mr. Kelly, 45, will oversee the Company's Global Marketing Solutions group.

· Playboy Enterprises, Inc. has named James S. Kaminsky to be Playboy's editorial director, the magazine's most senior day-to-day editorial position. He will succeed Arthur Kretchmer, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Kaminsky will work with Kretchmer until his retirement, which will begin after publication of the 50th anniversary issue of Playboy (January 2004). Kaminsky will be based in PEI's Publishing Group headquarters in New York. Kaminsky, 41, joins Playboy from Maxim magazine, which he joined as executive editor shortly after its launch. Prior to that, Kaminsky was a top editor at Conde Nast Women's Sport & Fitness.

· Reed Business Information (RBI), a provider of business-to-business information, announced the appointment of Colin Ungaro to President of the company's New Product Information (NPI) Division. Ungaro, who reports to Reed Business Information CEO James A. Casella, will lead the day-to-day operations of the division, which includes 18 print magazines, supplements, directories, webzines and online directories.

· Tribune Company, a leading media company, announced the appointment of Mike Plonski as vice president/Tribune Information Systems. Plonski will oversee Tribune's corporate technology infrastructure. He will also continue in his current role as Tribune Interactive's vice president/chief technology officer. Plonski was named vice president/chief technology officer of Tribune Interactive in December 2000 where he led the implementation of a proprietary standards-based content management and publishing platform across Tribune's national network of news and information websites.

· Element K, a provider of learning solutions for information technology and business skills, announced that effective August 30, 2002, Terry Nulty, the company's president, left the company to spend more time with his family. Going forward, Bruce Barnes Element K's CEO, will be assuming Mr. Nulty's primary responsibilities.

· Barnes & Noble, Inc. announced that Maureen O'Connell has resigned as Executive Vice President of Finance. Ms. O'Connell has left to become Executive Vice President, Chief Financial & Administrative Officer of Gartner, Inc., a research and advisory firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. At Gartner she will have responsibility for the company's worldwide finance, legal, tax, treasury, business development, human resources, workplace infrastructure, strategic pricing, investor relations and internal audit functions, as well as having direct client responsibilities. O'Connell will report directly to Michael D. Fleisher, Gartner chairman and chief executive officer.

· Nigella Lawson will write a column for The New York Times's Dining In/Dining Out section in alternate weeks starting on Sept. 18. The column will emphasize Nigella's "just do it" philosophy -- easy cooking, easy eating -- applied to casual entertaining for friends and family. Her first column, written and photographed during a recent trip to Italy, features Mediterranean recipes for a casual lunch in Tuscany. The column will be sold and distributed to other media via The New York Times Syndicate.

· VNU, one of the world's leading media and information companies, said that it has formally named Andrew L. Wing as president and chief executive officer of Nielsen Entertainment.

· Steve Van Thournout has been named president of Wright Group/McGraw-Hill, an elementary school supplementary materials provider, which is a unit of McGraw-Hill Education. Mr. Van Thournout reports to Buzz Ellis, president of the School Education Group. Mr. Van Thournout is currently president of McGraw-Hill/Contemporary, which publishes materials for the English as a Second Language, Adult Education and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) markets, and will continue to oversee the unit.

Digital Publishing

· The Akron Beacon Journal has launched a digital edition of its newspaper for readers who want their newspaper delivered over the Internet. Beacon Journal Digital is an electronic newspaper that uses Adobe Acrobat Reader to deliver the entire newspaper exactly as it appears in print.

· The World Almanac and Book of Facts is now available on handheld computers. The World Almanac Education Group and Town Compass, LLC announced the creation of the 2002 World Almanac databases for Palm OS handhelds. These databases are available for download from PocketDirectory.com. Town Compass is a software development and content management services company that enables business and organizations to publish content for delivery to handheld devices. The World Almanac Education Group is a division of WRC Media Inc., a publishing and media company.

Content Deals

· Officials with Global Gaming Business magazine, an international gaming trade publication, announced that they had reached an agreement with the American Gaming Association (AGA), naming the magazine as "An Official Publication" of the AGA.

· The McGraw-Hill Companies announced it has sold MMS International, a unit of Standard & Poor's, which provides real time fixed income and foreign exchange commentary and analysis, to MMS Group Ltd., a newly formed company. MMS Group Ltd. has been formed by a combination of institutional funds advised by Alchemy Partners LLP, the Halifax Bank of Scotland, plus senior MMS managers, led by Mickey Arora.

Launches and Redesigns

· Technology Review Inc. announced the launch of the MIT Technology Insider, a newsletter focused exclusively on the cutting edge research and emerging technologies, innovations, patents, licensing deals and start-up companies arising from the labs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Through interviews with campus researchers and scientists, and profiles of their labs, the Insider highlights technology innovation at its earliest stage. The monthly publication will be delivered via email on the first Tuesday of each month. Yearly subscriptions (12 monthly issues) to the MIT Technology Insider are now available for $95.

· Modern Bride magazine's website, ModernBride.com, has been revamped. In addition to a redesign, the site includes an overhauled Dressfinder tool which lets a bride-to-be search a database of the latest gown images and a revised and expanded Local Services section guides her to wedding services and vendors--reception sites, photographers, DJs and more.

· SBC Communications Inc. and Yahoo! Inc. have unveiled SBC Yahoo! DSL, a Internet broadband service.

· Snapshots International, a publisher of international market research overviews, is now offering its market research overviews online. Snapshots International currently publishes 1700 reports covering 35 industries in 23 countries; each report covers market size, market segmentation, market shares with web-links to the major players, distribution, socio-economic data for the country, forecasts, and sources for further research, such as trade associations.

Miscellaneous

· CXN Media Corporation announced that it is transferring its editorial operations, currently carried out in Beijing, to its Montreal Head Office. CXN Media is currently negotiating a cost-sharing arrangement with its joint venture partner CEINet, under which CEINet will continue to provide the exclusive content but all final editing activities now be performed in Montreal. The company has reassigned Mr. Raymond Boisvert to a wholly owned subsidiary of CXN Media Corporation named CXN Ventures. Mr. Raymond Boisvert has resigned as President, Secretary and Director of CXN Media Corporation to concentrate on his new task at hand and Jean-Francois Amyot takes over as President and CEO of CXN Media. CXN Media is also actively pursuing its acquisition of Smart Investor magazine and other related companies.

· As announced on August 9, 2002, Learn2 Corporation sold its elearning assets, including the rights to the name Learn2. As part of the agreement, Learn2 has changed its name to LTWC Corporation, and will retain the trading symbol LTWC.
