Steven Ainsley will succeed Lynn O. Matthews as president and chief operating officer for the Regional Newspaper Group after Mr. Matthews retires at the end of 2002. Mr. Ainsley, 49, was named senior vice president for the Regional Newspaper Group in 1999. · Penton Media, Inc. announced it has merged its Penton Technology Media and Penton Lifestyle Media divisions into a new division called the Penton Technology & Lifestyle Media Division. David B. Nussbaum, president of the Penton Technology Media Division and a corporate executive vice president, will serve as president of the newly formed division. Penton now operates three divisions: Penton Technology & Lifestyle Media, Penton Industry Media and Penton Retail Media. Nussbaum, 44, joined Penton in 1998 as executive vice president and group president. · Allrecipes.com, an online meal-planning resource, announced the addition of advertising veteran Carl Trautmann to its executive team. Based in New York, Trautmann will be responsible for expanding Allrecipes' marketing and sponsorship revenues and driving the effort to build company awareness amongst the key advertising agencies nationwide with a focus in the New York and Chicago areas. Most recently, Trautmann was with the Meredith Corporation. · Nancy L. Green, has been promoted to the new position of vice president for circulation at Lee Enterprises. Mary Junck, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said the appointment reflects Lee's emphasis on circulation growth, recent expansion by 16 daily newspapers and Green's achievements as director of circulation/distribution, sales and marketing. · Pamela J. Browning, advertising director at the Asheville Citizen-Times in North Carolina, will join Lee Enterprises as publisher of The Sentinel in Carlisle. She succeeds Wayne Powell, who resigned to become publisher of the Journal Tribune in Biddeford, Maine. Browning began her newspaper career in 1984 while earning a degree in marketing at Southwest Missouri State University, joining the News-Leader in Springfield. Digital Publishing · The Tablet PC Digital Publishing Conference was announced by the Open eBook Forum, an event focusing on the impact the Tablet PC platform from Microsoft Corporation will have on epublishing markets. Scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the McGraw-Hill auditorium, the one-day conference will showcase the powerful new features of the Tablet PC platform and how book, magazine, newspaper and other publishers can provide digital versions of their publications for an excellent on-screen reading experience. Tablet PC devices will be available on November 7th from a range of manufacturers, including HP, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Acer, ViewSonic and Motion Computing. Content Deals · LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc., a developer of technology-based learning products, announced its new educational offering for high schoolers featuring content and strategy contributions from Kaplan, Inc., providers of test preparation materials. The LeapFrog iQuest Test Prep solution leverages Kaplan's study techniques and content to offer an interactive solution that helps students prepare for college entrance exams. · FluentMedia, a content-licensing agency of Tribune Company, announced plans to provide premium news content from America's top newspapers, wire services and trade publications to airline passengers via the Verizon Airfone JetConnect inflight data service. The JetConnect custom content portal will deliver news from FluentMedia's premium information providers through Verizon's existing delivery network. Passengers will access the information using their personal laptop computers, for a per-flight usage fee. The service will be available aboard select aircraft equipped with Verizon Airfone in-flight telephone service. CenterWatch, a division of Thomson Healthcare, and The HealthScoutNews Service, a division of ScoutNews LLC, announced an alliance to disseminate news and information about clinical trials and the development of new medical treatments. · The New York Times and Hoover's have announced a joint marketing agreement to promote Hoover's subscriptions and The New York Times Electronic Edition. As part of the agreement, Hoover's will place a promotional message on Hoover's Online that directs users to www.hoovers.com/nyt for subscription details on the special offer and how to subscribe. Users will then be directed to a unique online registration page for Hoover's and NYTEE. The New York Times will also place a promotional message on nytimes.com to direct users to the promotional page on Hoover's Online. The New York Times will also run promotional ads for the joint offer in The New York Times print edition. · MediaBay, Inc., a company specializing in spoken audio content, announced a distribution agreement with BBC Audiobooks America, a subsidiary of BBC Worldwide, Ltd. Under the terms of the agreement, BBC Audiobooks America will distribute, on an exclusive basis, the Radio Spirits' classic radio products to the North American library market and, on a non-exclusive basis, the products in the United Kingdom. · Aspen Publishers, Inc. announced that it has acquired Accounting Research Manager (ARM) from Arthur Andersen. ARM is an online databases of analytical accounting and auditing information as well as primary source data from accounting regulators and standards boards. ARM will become part of Aspen Publishers, New York, NY, a provider of legal and business information, and a Wolters Kluwer company. Approximately 16 Andersen accounting experts also will join Aspen as part of the acquisition. These individuals will remain based in Chicago. Launches and Redesigns · Noisebox.org has launched with the purpose of amplifying the voice of the non-profit community. Noisebox.org is a news wire to which non-profit groups can post news releases at no cost, and through which journalists and the public can stay informed of the tireless efforts of those serving communities worldwide. For the media professional, the news at Noisebox.org is searchable by location, date, and market sector. · MetaCrawler has relaunched with an updated design. Benefits of the new design include meta-search engine homepage and web search results pages that are cleaner and easier-to-use. The 40-page tabloid publication will premiere with companion DVD insert and IWN Expo and Festival’s official Program Guide at a Fall 2002 public Internet exhibition in Chicago, Illinois. · Dialog NewsEdge has launched its industry-specific news alerting service for corporations. Dialog NewsEdge combines up-to-the-minute news, analysis and research culled from thousands of global sources with customized editorial relevance ranking, managed by editors specializing in their industry sector. · BostonWorks, the recruitment services division of The Boston Globe, announced the relaunch of On Call -- a monthly magazine for healthcare professionals in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. In addition to the new look premiering with the October, 2002 issue, On Call will increase its circulation base by more than 10,000 additional readers from Worcester to Provincetown, and from southern New Hampshire to the Rhode Island border. On Call is published 10 times a year and has been a longtime professional companion to nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and psychiatric clinicians. · Where International has announced plans to update the design of its visitor publication, Where Magazine. Where International, the publishers of Where Magazine, is owned and operated by Miller Publishing Group, LLC, a Los Angeles based publishing company. · PBI Media has announced the launch of an event dedicated to the digital content delivery industry. The first Digital Content Delivery Expo (DCD Expo) will take place February 4-6, 2003 at the San Jose Convention Center in California. This event will feature more than 30 issue-related sessions and more than 100 exhibitors on the tradeshow floor. Formerly REPLItech, DCD Expo has expanded its scope to include the entire spectrum of digital content delivery processes, and will provide a forum for industry education as well as a platform for networking and business development. · TechTarget has launched of two new e-mail newsletters and a yearlong Webcast series aimed at enterprise IT professionals. The bi-weekly "IT Career Expert" newsletters deliver information about the skills and technologies enterprise IT professionals need to succeed in their demanding roles. The Webcast series will run twice a month across three TechTarget sites and will feature expert advice for enterprise IT managers, administrators, and developers on IT certification, training and other ways to further their careers. · Gist Communications, an independent developer of interactive television guides, announced that its onscreen television magazine, known as TVMAG, has been deployed with the Digeo Basic iTV service to more than 600,000 Charter Communications, Inc. customers in 18 markets. The TVMAG information is updated daily with fresh content, which is served from Gist's headquarters in New York. · The Gray Sheet, published by F-D-C Reports, an Elsevier Science company, and Jacoti bvba, medical device reimbursement consultants, announced the launch of GLOBALDeviceReimbursement.com, a bimonthly electronic newsletter focusing on medical device reimbursement in Europe and the U.S. GLOBALDeviceReimbursement.com will examine medical device payment policies and issues within the European Union as well as the U.S. The publication will also feature regular reports on developments in the Asian markets. · IListenToBooks.com, sponsored by Brilliance Audio Inc., have announced its new audiobook sharing website. The site suggest audiobook readers, "have some fun and share your love of audiobooks with a stranger by leaving your audio book anywhere someone else could pick it up ... in a coffee shop, in the lunchroom at work, on an airplane, or on your commuter train." The website follows a similar theme started by BookCrossing. Members register an audiobook at IListenToBooks.com by entering a title or ISBN number, and get a unique tracking label to printout. Miscellaneous · iBill, a provider of e-transactions and Yaga, Inc., a provider of an advanced payment platform, announced that TIME.com is using a combined Yaga-iBill solution to power sales of TIME.com's archived content. variety of options for purchasing, including micropayments, subscriptions, time based passes and gift subscriptions to generate revenue from the site's digital content. In 2001, TIME.com launched the TIME Archive as a premium content service. The TIME Archive provides users with access to the full-text of over 30,000 TIME articles that have appeared in the magazine since 1985 and selected articles dating back to 1932. · Eighty-one percent of Americans feel they should write a book, according to a survey of 1,006 adult Americans commissioned by Jenkins Group, Inc., a Michigan publishing services firm, which sponsors the annual Independent Publisher Book Awards and issues the monthly online magazine Independent Publisher. · Vivendi Universal Publishing (VU Publishing) has announced several new games as part of its Games division's (VU Games) long-term agreement with Tolkien Enterprises to develop interactive entertainment based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The new titles include The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Online, an Online Massively Multi-player (OLMMP) role playing game, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring, a real time strategy (RTS) game, and additional PC and console titles based on Tolkien's The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The new titles join VU Games' previously announced Tolkien line-up, which includes The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring titles due this fall from Black Label Games, and The Hobbit from Sierra Entertainment due for release in 2003. · SEGA of America, Inc. announced that it has partnered with bestselling author Michael Crichton to develop a new video game based on an original concept to be created by Michael Crichton in association with SEGA. The partnership will bring together top SEGA game developers and Michael Crichton in a collaborative venture resulting in a new game currently scheduled for release in 2004.
