Stewart has been named Editor of the Harvard Business Review. Previously, he was on the Board of Editors at Fortune magazine and most recently was Editorial Director of Business 2.0, both of which are published by Time Inc. The announcement was made by David Wan, President and CEO of Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP), which publishes Harvard Business Review. · Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. announced that Ray Hopkins will join the Company as Executive Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing. He will be based in Pasadena, and will report directly to Company Co-President and COO, Jeff Shell. Ray replaces Mark Allen, who left the Company in May 2002. Tonia O'Connor, who has led the Company's affiliate team in the interim, will report to Ray, and will continue to be based in Radnor, Pennsylvania, where she will manage the Company's interactions with Comcast among her other duties. Ray will join the Company on October 28th, 2002. In his new role, Ray will be responsible for Gemstar-TV Guide's entire interaction with U.S. cable and satellite providers. Hopkins comes to Gemstar-TV Guide from Fox Cable Networks, where he served as Senior Vice President, Affiliate Sales and Marketing since June 1999 and was one of the original senior executives since 1997. · Spa Finder Magazine, a spa travel and lifestyle publication, has announced the appointment of Maria A. Padova as Vice President, Associate Publisher. As Vice President, Associate Publisher, Padova will manage the overall sales efforts and brand positioning for all the company's media properties, including Spa Finder Magazine, the Spa Enthusiast newsletter and spafinder.com. She will be responsible for growing advertising revenue and developing marketing and sales strategies that integrate all of Spa Finder's marketing opportunities. Before joining Spa Finder, Padova ran a consulting company. Padova's experience includes eight years at The Hearst Corporation where she was promoted to Group Director, Beauty and Fashion. · Homestore, Inc., a supplier of online media and technology tools to real estate professionals, announced that Allan Dalton has joined the company as President of Realtor.com. Since 1997, Dalton has been a senior executive within several of Cendant Corporation's residential real estate units. · Reed Business Information (RBI), a publisher of business-to-business publications and a member of the Reed Elsevier Group plc, announced the promotion of Andrew Rak to vice president and general counsel. Andrew, who has served as RBI's deputy general counsel since November 2001, is responsible for overseeing all of the company's legal matters. He will report directly to Henry Horbaczewski, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Reed Elsevier Inc. Andrew has been with RBI since 2000. Before joining Reed, Andrew was Senior Counsel for Fortune Brands, Inc. · Univision Communications, a Spanish-language media company in the United States, announced the appointment of Timothy I. Krass to the position of Executive Vice President, Affiliate Relations, effective immediately. Krass will be responsible for managing affiliate relations within the cable and satellite industries for Univision, Telefutura and Galavision. Krass will also manage Univision's and Telefutura's broadcast affiliate relationships. Based in Los Angeles, Krass will report to Michael D. Wortsman, President of the Univision Television Group. Prior to joining Univision, Krass was Senior Vice President, Affiliate Sales and Marketing at Intertainer, Inc.. · Tribune Publishing, a unit of Tribune Company, announced that Efrain Hernandez Jr. has been named to direct the reporting arm of Metro, the company's two-year program designed to prepare African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans with limited journalism experience for full-time reporting/editing positions at one of Tribune's 12 daily newspapers. Metro has two tracks, one for copy editors at Long Island-based Newsday and the other for reporters at the Los Angeles Times. Hernandez will oversee the Los Angeles training. · The Detroit Free Press announced Tuesday that Thom Fladung is returning to the Free Press newsroom as its managing editor. Fladung, 42, has been managing editor of the Akron Beacon Journal for the past two years. From 1994 until 2000, he worked in a variety of editing jobs at the Free Press. As the Free Press' managing editor, Fladung will be responsible for putting out each day's newspaper. Fladung replaces Hutton, who was promoted to executive editor in June following the death of Executive Editor Robert G. McGruder in April. Fladung is to start in late October. Digital Publishing · Xlibris, a provider of print-on-demand books for self-published authors, has launched the Press Release Campaign. This new service for authors will write and distribute press releases to the media in order to help authors publicize their books. Additionally, Xlibris will serve as the authors' press contact, fielding media inquiries and requests for review copies. Content Deals · Infotrieve has announced a new linking partnership between Infotrieve and Institute of Physics Publishing (IoPP). This collaboration allows customers to link from references in IoPP Electronic Journals services to Infotrieve's document delivery services. · Wolters Kluwer North America announced that its Aspen Publishers, Inc. has purchased the assets and business of Bowne & Co., Inc.'s securities publishing division, the company's business unit engaged in the sale of books and videos on securities, corporate and legal topics. Bowne's securities publishing division assets will become part of Aspen Publishers, New York, NY, a provider of legal and business information. · Lee Enterprises has completed the sale of two publications in southern Oregon to Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. They are the Ashland Daily Tidings, a Monday-Saturday afternoon newspaper with circulation of 5,100, and Nickel Want Ad Newspaper, a classified advertising publication in Medford, with weekly distribution of 30,000. · Safari Books Online, a joint venture between IT publishers O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. and The Pearson Technology Group (PTG), a division of Pearson plc, announced an agreement between Safari and Microsoft Press to publish Microsoft Press books in the Safari Tech Books Online service. With this new agreement, programmers and administrators who subscribe to Safari will now be able to search for key words as well as read the full text of Microsoft Press technology books online. · PricewaterhouseCoopers' Entertainment & Media Practice and The Hollywood Reporter announced the renewal of their online editorial collaboration and the expansion of their relationship to include additional joint marketing and promotional activities. The online editorial collaboration -- PricewaterhouseCoopers' Media Analyst Corner on HollywoodReporter.com -- offers users industry analysis, data and forecasts from PricewaterhouseCoopers, as well as articles from select industry trade publications. The two companies will expand their relationship to include several event co-promotions, beginning with The Hollywood Reporter's participation at a PricewaterhouseCoopers executive seminar event. The two organizations will also jointly market the PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2002-2006, a five-year international market forecast. Launches and Redesigns · Network Computing, a provider analysis of technologies, vendors and products to IT Experts, has launched a redesign of its publication. The redesign commenced with Network Computing's September 30th issue. In addition to aesthetic changes, the redesign will also impact the magazine's layout by revising various editorial sections throughout the book. One notable change is Network Computing Incorporated (NWC, Inc.). A unique editorial concept, NWC, Inc., will serve as a real-world lab environment that integrates business applications, integration issues and deployment concerns. Based on direct feedback from readers, the magazine also upgraded the Report Cards section that provides more insight into product ratings and evaluations. Additional changes include vendor viability charts and ROI analyzers. · CMP Media's TechWeb Network has launched The Open Enterprise, a news-and-analysis website covering open-source and standards-based software in a corporate setting. The website is produced collaboratively by two TechWeb Network member sites, InformationWeek.com and InternetWeek.com. Updated throughout the day, The Open Enterprise features news on open-source corporate use combined with a different big-picture, technology-rich feature kicking off each week. That feature is then augmented every day that week with related content -- product reviews, interviews with "open" enterprises, reader forums, case studies, research results and vendor interviews. · The premiere issue of Digital Media Law & Policy Weekly has launched. The publication provides briefings on digital media law and policy matters to those in the digital media and entertainment arena. The weekly publication is produced by Digital Media Wire, Inc., a strategic information provider devoted to objective coverage of news stories related to the convergence of media, entertainment and technology. The electronic publication is targeted at law professionals and media and entertainment executives. Digital Media Law Report is delivered via email every Wednesday. · VR1 Entertainment President Richard P. Wnuk announced the company has joined with Jaleco USA, a publisher of entertainment software, to form the multi-platform software gaming publisher Jaleco Entertainment. Jaleco Entertainment unites the developing talent of VR1 with the publishing expertise of Jaleco USA to become a producer of quality entertainment software for the global market. The company will introduce nine titles on six different platforms in the fourth quarter of this year. Leading its list of soon-to-be-released titles is Trailer Park Tycoon, a resource management game for the PC; an upgrade of the massively multi-player aerial combat simulator game, Fighter Ace 3.5; and a number of action and adventure games for the Game Boy Advance, Playstation 2, and GameCube. The new company is based in Buffalo, N.Y., with European headquarters in London, England. · e.Digital Corp. has launched its new broadband entertainment website, WeDigMusic.com. WeDigMusic.com features music from thousands of musicians through e.Digital's affiliations with content providers such as Pressplay, MP3.com, Liquid Audio, and EMusic. WeDigMusic.com also provides streaming music for free using the WeDigRadio Internet radio service. · StudyAbroad.com has announced the launch of CollegeAbroad.com, a resource for researching four-year college programs overseas. At launch, CollegeAbroad.com offers U.S. students the opportunity to research over 550 four-year programs abroad base in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, The United Kingdom and Ireland. Miscellaneous · Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., two adult volunteer literacy organizations, have become ProLiteracy Worldwide. ProLiteracy Worldwide has programs in 45 developing countries as well as in the U.S. where it represents some 1,450 adult volunteer literacy organizations. ProLiteracy serves more than 350,000 adult new learners around the world each year. ProLiteracy's publishing division, New Readers Press, produces and distributes approximately 500 titles of adult educational books and materials to literacy organizations, schools, libraries, and other institutions nationwide. New Readers Press also publishes News for You, a weekly newspaper for adult new readers, which is read by 90,000 adult learners. · CareerBuilder, LLC and Gannett Co., Inc., announced that Gannett has acquired a one-third interest in CareerBuilder joining media companies Knight-Ridder, Inc. and Tribune Company as owners. The companies also announced that more than 90 Gannett newspapers will become CareerBuilder affiliates and that CareerBuilder will power the career channel on USAToday.com. In print, CareerBuilder will now deliver local help wanted ads to a combined Sunday circulation of 15 million through more than 130 newspapers. Online, CareerBuilder will be exposed to nearly 26 million monthly unique visitors through the Gannett, Knight Ridder and Tribune newspaper websites. · Marvel Studios, a division of Marvel Enterprises, Inc. announced that it finalized an agreement with Universal Pictures to bring two more of the company's most intriguing super heroes to the big screen: Sub-Mariner -- the first-ever super hero created by Marvel Comics -- and Prime. These deals come as post-production continues on the first project being jointly developed by Marvel and Universal -- the June release of The Hulk starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly and directed by Ang Lee. · MediaBay, Inc., a company specializing in spoken audio content, announced that it has obtained $1.5 million in additional funding from a company wholly-owned by MediaBay's chairman, Norton Herrick. The Company has received $1.0 million with an additional $150,000 to be received in October and $350,000 in November. This new investment puts the total investment by Mr. Herrick, his sons and wholly owned affiliates in MediaBay at approximately $20 million. The money will be used by the Company to expand its marketing efforts for its Audio Book Club business and its new continuity programs.
