· The McGraw-Hill Companies appointed Henry Hirschberg, 59, President of McGraw-Hill Education. Since 1999 he has been group president of the Corporation's Higher Education, Professional and International Publishing division. He replaces Robert Evanson, 66, who will retire on March 1, 2003. Mr. Hirschberg has 30 years of publishing industry experience. Before joining McGraw-Hill Education, he was president of Pearson plc's Higher Education Group.

· Holt, Rinehart and Winston announced that Rick Morgan, previously with Holt's parent company, Harcourt Education, has been named chief financial officer. The announcement was made by Holt President, Judy Fowler. Morgan's previous jobs with Harcourt have included director of the global supply chain and senior manager and applications architect for information technology.

· Primedia Inc., a targeted media company, announced that Sabrina Weill, 32, has been named Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. Ms. Weill most recently held the title of Executive Editor at CosmoGIRL, published by the Hearst Corporation. As Editor-in-Chief, Ms. Weill will be responsible for the editorial direction of Seventeen, evolving the magazine and brand, while building on its continued market-leading strength. Ms. Weill will help drive the integration of content from Seventeen across Internet operations, live events, books and television programs.

· Giga Information Group, Inc. announced that John Andrews has been named president and chief executive officer. Andrews will also be a member of Giga's board of directors. Before joining Giga, Andrews successfully led his first technology startup, eMedSoft.com, into a publicly held health services and technology company (now known as Med Diversified). Andrews is currently serving on the board of directors for Med Diversified Inc. and Trestle Corporation.

· Coinciding with the launch of Plate, veteran foodservice publisher Steven D. Mayer has signed on to lead the development of the new culinary journal. Mayer joins Plate from a 20-year career with Restaurants & Institutions magazine, where he was most recently Vice President and Publisher and the founding Publisher of Chain Leader magazine.

· MTS, Incorporated, dba Tower Records, announced the appointment of Bill Baumann to Senior Vice President, Technology and Supply Chain at Tower Records and its distribution company, Bayside Entertainment Distribution. He will also remain as the Chief Information Officer for the company. In his capacity as Chief Information Officer, Bill Baumann, 40, has worked extensively in the field of technology. As Senior Vice President, Technology and Supply Chain, Baumann will report directly to Tower's interim CEO, Betsy Burton.

· Advanstar Communications Inc. has announced the promotion of Barbara G. Goode to the position of Group Editorial Director. In this position, Ms. Goode will coordinate editorial opportunities among three manufacturing-focused publications at Advanstar: Sensors, Frontline Solutions, and Cadalyst. Ms. Goode, a resident of Hillsborough, has been Editor in Chief of Sensors for five years and is responsible for overseeing its editorial team; launching new products; and integrating the magazine, website, trade show, and conference.

· China Xin Network Media Corp., a Canadian-based global provider of financial, economic and business information on China, has announced changes in top management. Jean-Francois Amyot will step down from active management and George Lee, President of CXN Ventures, will become China Xin Network Media's overall Chairman and CEO. Mr. Amyot has elected to leave the Company to pursue other interests.

· The Los Angeles Times has appointed Nicholas Goldberg as Op-Ed editor, it was announced by Janet Clayton, editor of the Editorial Pages. He will assume his new position in early December. Goldberg's writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times, New Republic, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, the Nation, the Sunday Times of London, the Washington Monthly, American Lawyer and Conde Nast Traveler.

· The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the nation's non-profit entertainment software rating body, announced that interactive media veteran Patricia E. Vance has been appointed its president. Before joining the ESRB, she was executive vice president & general manager, Admissions Services for The Princeton Review. Prior to that, she served as president and CEO of HalfthePlanet.com, an online resource network for people with disabilities. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is a self-regulatory body established in 1994 by the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA). ESRB independently applies and enforces ratings, advertising guidelines, and online privacy principles adopted by the industry.

· Corzen, Inc, a provider of online market data and business information, announced that Kip Cassino, a senior media researcher and developer of AdAudit Services, will join Corzen as Vice President of Research. Additionally, the media data and analysis Cassino has developed for AdAudit will be made available online via the Corzen Indicators platform. Prior to joining Corzen, Cassino served as Research Director for several newspaper publishing companies, including Knight Ridder. Cassino will oversee the design and development of Corzen's proprietary data and analysis services.

· Trish Henry has been named Worldwide Advertising Sales Director of the Harvard Business Review. The announcement was made by Cathryn Cranston, Publisher of Harvard Business Review, which is a business unit of Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP). Ms. Henry, formerly an advertising category manager for Harvard Business Review, will start in her new role immediately reporting to HBR Publisher Cathryn Cranston. She will oversee HBR's 6 US field account executives and its 12 international sales teams, including those in the UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and China.

· Realtimepublishers.com, Inc., a provider of corporate-sponsored epublishing services, announced that Stephanie Evans has been appointed to Vice President of Operations and Dick Davison has joined the company as Director of Sales and Business Development. Stephanie Evans has been with Realtimepublishers since its inception in 1999.

· Universal Pictures has promoted Masako Ichino to vice president, business affairs, it was announced by Jimmy Horowitz, executive vice president, business affairs and legal affairs. In her new position, she will continue to negotiate deals for books, screenplays and other source material, as well as above-the-line talent agreements for writers, producers, directors and actors for Universal's motion picture projects. Ms. Ichino's promotion is effective immediately and she will continue to report to Mr. Horowitz. Ms. Ichino joined Universal Pictures as director, business affairs in July 1998. Prior to joining Universal, Ms. Ichino served as director of business and legal affairs at USA Broadcasting, Inc. and as manager of business and legal affairs at Savoy Pictures, Inc.

Digital Publishing

· Palm Digital Media, Inc., a publisher and retailer of eBooks for handhelds, announced that Palm Reader Pro was named Best eBook Reader at the Pocket PC Awards 2002 ceremony held at the Pocket PC Summit in Hollywood Oct. 23. The Pocket PC Awards are organized every year by Pocket PC magazine to honor the Best Pocket PC products.

Content Deals

· Movies.com, a website for movie fans offering movie reviews, trailers, local show times and other content, has integrated sister site, Ebertandroeper.tv, the online arm of Buena Vista Television's renowned Ebert & Roeper syndicated television program, as its premier movie review content. Ebertandroeper.tv content now has prominent placement on the homepage of Movies.com. The content includes theatrical release and video/DVD reviews from the popular Ebert & Roeper television show. The ebertandroeper.tv URL will remain in place and the site will now share the branding and navigation of Movies.com. In addition, the Movies.com URL will be promoted on Ebert & Roeper television broadcasts.

· Timberwolf Press, publishers of science fiction, mystery, military and other genre fiction, and Vapor Blade, a film and DVD media production company, announced a strategic allianc. Timberwolf will re-issue, in hardcover, the bestselling military science fiction Helmsman saga, by Bill Baldwin, in new, revised, "Director's Cut" editions. In addition, Baldwin will pen a new novel, The Turning Tide, launching a new series, where the existing series left off. Each title will be published in hardback as well as in Timberwolf's audiobook editions. Vapor Blade will develop interactive DVD's and trailers for Timberwolf's books and audiobooks.

· CityXpress Corp, a developer of solutions for media companies, announced that it has signed agreements with six additional U.S. newspapers to run auctions. The Ogden Standard-Examiner, Billings Gazette and Eau Claire Leader-Telegram are among four newspapers launching auctions in the month of November 2002. The Salt Lake Tribune and The Bakersfield Californian have also signed agreements to run auctions in the first quarter of 2003. CityXpress has conducted over 45 auctions for newspapers.

· New York Times Digital, the digital business unit of The New York Times Company, and Edmunds.com, Inc., an online consumer resource for automotive information, announced plans to launch an integrated, co-branded automotive resource on NYTimes.com that will be available in January 2003. The new offering at NYTimes.com/autos will deliver automotive research and transaction capabilities to readers, including vehicle information dating back to 1980, Edmunds.com True Market Value(R) pricing, True Cost to Own projections and other tools.

· FindLaw, a resource for information about the law, and Nolo, a publisher of self-help legal software and books, announced a new relationship with Microsoft bCentral, an Internet resource for small business. Nolo and FindLaw will provide all law-related small-business content and resources on the new bCentral Legal Center.

Launches and Redesigns

· Life OUTside, is a new nationally syndicated, commercial, radio-newsmagazine for, by, and about the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) Community. Life OUTside, airing in 40 markets on 70 radio stations across the country and on the Internet at lifeoutside.org, grabs 1.5 million listeners per show. With an all-gay on-air staff, the program brings in a mix of listeners through entertainment, news, politics, music, social topics and healthcare from a GLBT point of view. "Just being a gay radio program today isn't unique. It's the up-to-date, in-depth, quality news, features, entertainment and talk presented by us, about us, that discuss real life issues that makes us different," says Chris DeChant, the show's creator, host and executive producer.

Miscellaneous

· Activision, Inc. announced that it has been named master videogame licensee for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, the bestselling children's book series that is in development for a feature film by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. The license grants Activision the exclusive right to develop and publish products for all video game consoles, handheld platforms and the PC based on the franchise, A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Lemony Snicket series has been published in 29 languages with more than 6.3 million books in circulation in the United States alone.
