Thomas Nelson Plans to Publish Fewer Titles

Posted on February 14, 2003

Thomas Nelson, Inc., a publisher, producer, and distributor of books emphasizing Christian, inspirational, and family value themes, has announced a realignment of its publishing operations. The realignment includes cost cutting and streamlining which will result in termination of about 30 employees. The company also plans fewer titles in the future.

Sam Moore, President and CEO of the company, said, "The primary purpose of this realignment is to organize our Company's structure with our basic business strategy. We continue to experience more of our sales coming from fewer of our authors. In a competitive environment where consumers are overwhelmed with choices, they tend to reach for the brands they know and trust. This is as true with books and Bibles as it is for other consumer products. Therefore, our strategy will be to develop more products with our established author brands and to begin to identify and build the emerging author brands of the future. As a result, we intend to publish fewer, but better performing titles.

"As an added benefit," Moore continued, "this realignment also streamlines our operations and reduces our operating overhead. The streamlining has resulted in the net elimination of approximately 30 employee positions in the Company. I have every confidence that this strategy will result in the Company being stronger than ever, in terms of financial and competitive positions."

The publishing company will now be organized as follows: The Thomas Nelson Bible and Reference Group will be under the leadership of Phil Stoner, Executive Vice President and Group Publisher; the Thomas Nelson Book Group will be under the leadership of Michael Hyatt, Executive Vice President and Group Publisher; and the Thomas Nelson Sales and Conferencing Group will continue to report to Lee Gessner, Executive Vice President.

A major part of the new strategy includes the formation of The Thomas Nelson Book Group under the leadership of Michael Hyatt. This group will consist of Nelson Books, W Publishing Group, J. Countryman, Tommy Nelson, and a general trade division, consisting of WND Books, Rutledge Hill Press, and Cool Springs Press.
