Black announced that Valerie Salembier, who has served as vice president and publisher of Hearst's Esquire since 1996, has been named senior vice president and publisher of Harper's BAZAAR. Replacing her will be men's magazine veteran Kevin O'Malley, who makes his return to Esquire, where he was advertising director from 1987-1992. At Esquire, Salembier helped lead the men's title in 2002 to its best year in the past decade. Before joining Hearst in 1996, she was senior vice president and publisher of Family Circle. She was also president of the New York Post and publisher of TV Guide. O'Malley was most recently president of Emap USA's Sports Division, where, since August 2000, he oversaw a number of men's sports-focused publications. Cynthia R. Lewis, publisher of Harper's BAZAAR since April 2000, will join forces with Mandi Norwood, former editor-in-chief of Mademoiselle and British Cosmopolitan, to develop a new women's style magazine, planned for a spring 2004 test. Prior to joining BAZAAR, Lewis served as publisher of Marie Claire from 1997-2000 and associate publisher from 1994-1997. Previously, she worked at Elle and Town & Country. · Salem Communications Corporation, a radio broadcaster focused on religious and family themes programming, announced that Curtis M. Johnson has been hired as the Corporate Vice President of Human Resources. In this role, Mr. Johnson will assume the leading role of managing and implementing all of the Human Resources programs and systems required to support continuous growth. Mr. Johnson has had a progressive career spanning 19 years with Rockwell International, leading to the executive position of Director of Human Resources & Communications. Salem Communications Corporation also announced the promotion of company veteran Ron Walters to Vice President of Church Relations, according to Executive Vice President of Radio, Joe D. Davis. Walters will assume the leading role to oversee pastoral and congregational communications strategies and assist in National Ministry Development, through directing corporate wide efforts to deepen relationships with local church pastors and their congregations. · AmericaEconomia, a business publication in Latin America, recently announced the appointment of Ian McCluskey as its new publisher. As part of his plans for 2003, McCluskey will launch a new ranking of the top 100 globally competitive companies in Latin America, in addition to a series of special reports on entrepreneurs in the region and a guide on how Latin American companies can begin doing business in South Florida. He is also developing a network of alliances with the leading newspapers from the region. McCluskey served as Editor-in-Chief, a responsibility now assumed by Raul Ferro who has been the magazine's General Editor since 1999. McCluskey joined AmericaEconomia in 1997 as Editor of the Brazilian edition. · Jupitermedia Corporation has that Alan M. Meckler, chairman and CEO of Jupitermedia, has started writing a several-times-per-week Weblog. The weblog contains Meckler's innermost thoughts about the launch and development surrounding Computer Digital Expo and the intention of replacing Comdex this November 17-21 in Las Vegas, Nev. · Tribune Broadcasting has named veteran broadcast executive John Vitanovec as regional vice president of Tribune Television. Currently vice president/general manager of WGN-TV (WB9), Chicago, Vitanovec will add responsibility for overseeing the operations of WXIN-TV (FOX59) and WTTV-TV (WB4), the company's two-station cluster in Indianapolis, Ind., and WXMI-TV (FOX17) in Grand Rapids, Mich. Vitanovec has served as vice president and general manager at WGN Television since May 1999. From 1997 to 1999, Vitanovec was vice president/director of operations for Tribune Broadcasting. Previously, he was vice president and general manager of WLVI-TV, Boston. · The McClatchy Company has named Valerie D. Canepa president and publisher of The Herald in Rock Hill, SC, effective March 10. Canepa is being promoted from her position as director of community publications for The Fresno Bee. In that role, she has supervised the operations of four weeklies: The Clovis (CA) Independent, CityView Neighbors, Vida en el Valle and Visalia (CA) CityView. Canepa joined The Fresno Bee in 1995 as an assistant metro editor and became editor of community publications two years later. She was promoted to director in 2001. · Tribune Broadcasting has announced that vice president and chief financial officer Thomas D. Leach has expanded his responsibilities to include news and broadcast operations. Effective immediately, Cissy Baker, vice president/news and bureau chief of Tribune Television's Washington News Bureau, and Tonina Grisanti, director/broadcast operations, will report to Leach. Leach will also assume responsibility for the division's Business Systems Development group. Currently Leach directs group staff activities for finance, planning and development for the company's television, radio and entertainment businesses. Content Deals · The Knot, an online wedding resource, announced that it has extended its agreement with MSN. According to the renewed agreement, The Knot will continue to be the wedding content partner with permanent presence on the Weddings area of MSN Women, providing wedding planning information, interactive tools, wedding gown galleries and community. · Salem Communications Corporation, a radio broadcaster focused on religious and family themes programming, announced that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Concord Media Group Inc. to acquire WJGR 1320AM, WZNZ 1460AM, WZAZ 1400AM and WBGB 106.5FM, in Jacksonville, FL for $9.25 million in cash. These stations will continue to be programmed in their existing formats. · Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced its Cygnus Expositions division has acquired the Solid Surface International Trade Show and Expo from the Nevada-based International Solid Surface Fabricator's Association (ISSFA). The event is the only one of its kind servicing the $1 billion solid surface and engineered stone industry. This is the second trade show acquisition for Cygnus Expositions this year. The division acquired 25 shows in January from Penton Media. Launches and Redesigns · The new edition of the online magazine Shared Spaces is now published. This digital magazine from the Netherlands Ministry of Spatial Planning, Housing and the Environment is a quarterly publication that looks at living, space and the environment. The goal of the publication is to bring attention to these subjects and serve as a platform for the exchange of visions, ideas and practical examples, with the emphasis on finding solutions to problems. The theme of this new edition is urbanization. The digital magazine is supplemental to the existing international Wwebsite of the Netherlands Ministry of Spatial Planning, Housing and the Environment. The international site is a medium in which the ministry departments focus on international issues and share policy information with their colleagues abroad. · Mobile Electronics, Auto Trim & Restyling News and Truck & SUV Performance magazines joined have forces to create AftermarketZONE.com, a new directory that gives automotive retailers access to over 5,000 suppliers and manufacturers and the ability to search in more than 850 product categories. Miscellaneous · Xlibris, a provider of print-on-demand publishing services to self-published authors, announced that royalties paid to authors using its services have reached the one million dollar mark. "A million dollars in royalties is the best news we could have," according to Chief Executive Officer John Feldcamp. According to Xlibris, its authors published more than 7,000 titles and sold over 300,000 books last year. Xlibris is a strategic partner of Random House Ventures, LLC, a subsidiary of Random House, Inc. Xlibris is a publishing services company based in Philadelphia, PA. · Warner Bros. Pictures announced the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will commence principal photography in Leavesden, England on February 24. Actors Gary Oldman, Timothy Spall, Michael Gambon, David Thewlis, Pam Ferris and Paul Whitehouse have joined the ensemble cast of the film, which is being directed by Academy Award nominee Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Great Expectations, A Little Princess) and produced by David Heyman, Chris Columbus and Mark Radcliffe. The executive producers of the film are Michael Barnathan and Callum McDougall. The screenplay is by Steve Kloves. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and his friends Ron and Hermione return as teenagers to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their third year of study, where they delve into the mystery surrounding an escaped prisoner who poses a dangerous threat to the young wizard. · The 81 finalists for the 49th Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards, which honor b-to-b editorial excellence, have been announced. Winners and a new award recognizing editorial courage and integrity will be announced at a luncheon ceremony on March 12 at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York.
