· The Magazine Consultancy, Inc., an international advertising sales and marketing company for Bauer Publishing, has appointed former Wenner Media executive Peter Michalsky to the newly developed position of group marketing director. Michalsky will report to Mike McCafferty, Chairman, The Magazine Consultancy. As Group Marketing Director, Michalsky is responsible for overseeing advertising sales and marketing for all Bauer publications in the United States, including In Touch Weekly, Woman's World, First for Women, J-14, TWIST, M, Soaps In Depth and Life Story. Prior to The Magazine Consultancy, Michalsky served as executive director for Wenner Media, where he oversaw corporate marketing for Rolling Stone, US and Men's Journal.

· Thomson Financial, an operating unit of The Thomson Corporation, and a provider of information and technology solutions, has appointed Jerry Borrell as senior editor of Venture Capital Journal. As senior editor, Mr. Borrell is responsible for a wide range of writing and reporting. Jerry reports directly to Lawrence Aragon, Editor of Venture Capital Journal and Private Equity Week.

· Primedia Inc. has named Daniel Wilhelm, age 45, president of its Primedia Digital Video Unit. Mr. Wilhelm, who has held senior management positions with FOX/Liberty Networks, Prime Network and Lighthouse Global Network, will oversee strategy and lead business development initiatives that will capitalize on Primedia's video assets. He will report directly to Jim Ritts, president and CEO of Primedia Television.

· The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. has announced a new global organizational structure designed to integrate businesses under common leadership, leverage synergy opportunities and reduce costs. The company's businesses will be managed in four newly defined groups, each headed by a president: Thomas D. Gardner, Reader's Digest International; Eric W. Schrier, Reader's Digest North America; Robert E. Raymond, Consumer Business Services; and Gary S. Rich, QSP. The four group presidents will report to Thomas O. Ryder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

· Technology attorney John Yates, who helped pioneer Atlanta's technology community, will be a weekly columnist for Local Tech Wire, an online publication serving the Southeast. His first column appears today. Topics will include entrepreneurism, venture capital financing and corporate governance as well as intellectual property, contracts and other legal issues. The importance of philanthropy and community service for tech companies and regional business cooperation will be addressed as well. The column, titled "The Yates Perspective," will occasionally feature prominent co-authors.

· Tribune Company announced that David Hiller, Tribune Interactive president, has been appointed senior vice president/publishing effective immediately. In this new position, he will be responsible for Tribune Classified Services, Tribune Media Services, The Hartford Courant and CLTV, and will continue to oversee Tribune Interactive. In his new role, Hiller will oversee Tribune Classified Services, the division that manages the company's print and online classified business; Tribune Media Services, a domestic and international provider of information and entertainment products for print, electronic and on-air media; The Hartford Courant, the oldest continuously published newspaper in the nation and the largest daily newspaper in Connecticut; and CLTV, the Chicago area's only 24-hour cable news station. He will report to Jack Fuller, Tribune Publishing president.

· The Board of Directors of Encyclopaedia Britannica has appointed Gordon T. Macomber to the new post of Chief Executive Officer of Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, a subsidiary of Encyclopaedia Britannica, Incorporated, and to a seat on the Encyclopaedia Britannica Board of Directors. John M. Morse, current President and Publisher of Merriam-Webster, will remain in that position and will report to Macomber. Prior to joining Merriam- Webster, Macomber was President and CEO of NYUonline, a subsidiary of New York University.

· SCP Communications has announced the addition of Melissa Warner as President of The Oncology Group (formerly PRR, Inc.), a division of SCP Communications, Inc. Ms. Warner was most recently President, Medical Division of Medical World Communications. Currently located in Melville, NY, The Oncology Group publishes information related to the fields of oncology and hematology, including Oncology, an independent clinical oncology publication.

· Congressional Quarterly Inc. (CQ) announced that political analyst Craig Crawford is joining the CQ news team as a columnist and special contributor. Crawford will write a weekly column for CQ Today, a news-daily that provides coverage of legislative and public policy activities on Capitol Hill. The column will launch on Monday, March 3, and will appear every Monday through the presidential primary season and the national conventions, according to David Rapp, editor and senior vice president in charge of CQ news publications. Crawford appears regularly on the MSNBC and CNBC cable news channels and on CBS News, where he is a network news analyst for the CBS Early Show and the CBS Evening News.

· Vantage Learning, a provider of online assessment and essay scoring technologies, has announced the appointment of Harry Barfoot to Vice President of Marketing, Vantage Laboratories, the parent of Vantage Learning. The announcement was made from the floor of the Fourth Annual Association of Test Publishers (ATP) Conference in Amelia Island, FL. In his new position, Barfoot will oversee all corporate marketing functions, including marketing and sales strategy, direct marketing, channel marketing, advertising, public relations, and industry conference initiatives. Barfoot joins Vantage having served as vice president and general manager of Scholastic Reading Counts, a business unit of Scholastic Inc.

Digital Publishing

· Lulu Enterprises, Inc. announced that Lulu Press, a web-based electronic publishing company focused primarily on customized book publishing in the higher education market, has evolved into Lulu.com, a marketplace for digital content that includes images and art, as well as textbooks, fiction, and other work. Lulu Enterprises is the latest venture of Red Hat, Inc. co-founder and open source enthusiast Bob Young. Lulu.com allows anyone to publish and sell digital files over the Internet. Publishing work on Lulu.com is free, and content creators are asked to establish a royalty fee for each item they upload. Lulu's revenue model is based on receiving a percentage of each content purchase, as well as on fees for a line of planned additional services, such as editing and formatting.

Content Deals

· MSN House & Home, a part of the MSN network of Internet services, has announced a national multiyear distribution agreement with Primedia Inc.'s Real Estate Division. The agreement brings together MSN House & Home's section with Primedia's database of residential real estate listings and related content. Primedia will also provide consumer assistance technologies, such as Home Valuation analytics tools; the ability to match, filter and direct qualified real estate buyers and sellers to the real estate industry; and its search capabilities. The launch of the integrated site will take place early in the second quarter of 2003.

· Bitpipe, Inc., a syndicator of IT vendor content, has announced that it has launched research libraries for several of the business technology sites produced by Ziff Davis Internet including PCMag.com, eweek.com, and extremetech.com.

Launches and Redesigns

· CNET Networks, Inc., a technology media company, has relaunch its ZDNet website. In addition to its new look and feel, the most significant changes to the new ZDNet site include "IT Priorities" and the "Power Center." IT Priorities is a market intelligence program and monthly report that combines user survey information with audience behavior tracking across CNET Networks' enterprise websites, which also include Builder.com, News.com, and TechRepublic.

· BillOReilly.com is now online for fans of the Fox News broadcasting personality. Bill O’Reilly is personally involved in his new website and offers “behind the scenes” access to the members of his new service. BillOReilly.com and its email newsletters are updated daily with new content from O’Reilly’s “No Spin” radio, television, and newspaper features.

· Terra Lycos, a global Internet network, has announced the launch of Tripod Blog Builder. Tripod combines the new Blog Builder feature with its home page building tools, giving Tripod members more ways to express themselves online. The new Tripod Blog Builder tool is included in Tripod's subscription packages, letting consumers create, edit and publish online without learning complex software commands. Content is automatically organized by time, day and month, creating an automatic archive.

· Casino City has launched its new Casino City Times website where gaming enthusiasts can find the latest in gaming news and advice on the most popular casino games. Gaming enthusiasts can also find out how play and win at Slots, Blackjack, Craps, Video Poker and other popular games with bestselling author and expert, Frank Scoblete, slots expert, John Robison, Midwest gaming guru, John Grochowski, Blackjack expert, Alan Krigman, player advocate, Mark Pilarski, and table games experts, Barney Vinson and Henry Tamburin. Casino City Times also provides gaming news and a free weekly newsletters.

· The Hartcourt Companies, Inc. announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Hartcourt Capital, Inc., will launch a bimonthly magazine called China Report on March 4th, 2003. The first issue will have a circulation of 20,000 copies, distributing directly to the investment community including investment banking firms, fund managers, venture capitalists and brokerage houses throughout the US, Europe and Asia. The magazine will also be available via website, china-report.net, and through weekly emails to registered readers starting May 2003. The objective of the magazine is to provide investors with updates and analysis on the fast-changing investment environment and opportunities in China.

· Hector V. Barreto, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced the launch of women-21.gov, a new website to help women small business owners deal with the ever-changing business climate and identify federal government resources for women.

· MusicMoz.org, a new directory for music sites, aims to be a comprehensive directory of music, built by volunteers around the world, with contributions from the web public. MusicMoz only offers volunteer editing positions. MusicMoz, aka The Open Music Project, was created because music information is one of the most searched topics online, and a very important application of the internet. MusicMoz and many of its features were inspired by the Open Directory Project. MusicMoz also uses Open Directory Project data, which any site may do providing they display the correct attribution. MusicMoz is not affiliated with Netscape, although many of their volunteer editors also edit at the Open Directory Project.

Miscellaneous

· iUniverse, a provider of self-publishing services, announced that two more authors who launched their careers with iUniverse have landed contracts with major, traditional publishing houses. The authors are:
  • Marky Stein, author of Fearless Interviewing: What to Do Before, During and After an Interview. McGraw-Hill Trade has assumed publication of the book, now titled Fearless Interviewing: How to Win the Job by Communicating With Confidence.
  • Gary Wassner, author of GemQuest, The Twins. Windstorm Creative has signed Wassner to a three-book publishing contract; this title and the next two books in the GemQuest saga will be released as a series in January 2004.
· Bauer Publishing USA, publisher of top newsstand titles including Woman's World and First For Women, announced that the ABC Fas-Fax confirms significant increases in paid circulation for its teen titles J-14 and M. J-14, a publication for teen girls, has reported a 10.7 percent increase in total paid circulation from last year. M magazine, geared for the younger tween girl, has reported a total paid circulation increase that tops 40% over the last reported period.
