McCorkindale, chairman, president and CEO of Gannett Co., Inc. He will replace Tom Curley who departed to join the Associated Press. Curley becomes president and CEO of the AP on June 1. Moon, who was executive vice president of Gannett's Newspaper Division until his appointment, will report to McCorkindale and serve on the Gannett Management Committee. From 1991 until last year, Moon was president, then president and publisher of The Tennessean in Nashville. · P. Anthony "Tony" Ridder, chairman and chief executive officer of Knight Ridder in San Jose, Calif., was elected chairman of the Newspaper Association of America at its annual meeting, held during the Association's Annual Convention, April 27-30, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers. Ridder succeeds William Dean Singleton, vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group Inc., Denver, who will continue to serve on the Board as immediate past chairman. Ridder was named chairman and CEO of Knight Ridder in 1995. He has served as president since 1989. Ridder joined the Knight Ridder corporate staff as president of the Newspaper Division in 1986. He moved to the corporate post from his job as president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News. Ridder also serves on the executive committee and board of The Associated Press and on the board of Classified Ventures. · The American Governance & Leadership Group has appointed veteran healthcare journalist Ron Shinkman as editor of its monthly newsletter, Healthcare Leadership & Management Report. Mr. Shinkman's affiliated firm, RFS Consulting, will also provide marketing expertise to the AG&L as it seeks to grow membership and subscribers for its publications. From 1996 to 2001 Mr. Shinkman was a staff writer for Modern Healthcare magazine, and served the last three years of his tenure as its Los Angeles Bureau Chief. · Ann Zacarian has joined Newsweek magazine as director of worldwide marketing, Executive Vice President and Worldwide Publisher Greg Osberg announced. Zacarian comes to Newsweek from senior positions at AOL/Time Warner, BMW and Sony. · CMP Media LLC announced that Fritz Nelson, VP/Publisher of Network Computing magazine, will also serve as VP/Publisher of Network Magazine. This dual role has been created to maximize complementary offerings between the two publications, while a recently combined sales force will provide advertisers with additional reach. In his capacity as VP/Publisher of Network Magazine, Nelson replaces Bill Howard. · MediaBay, Inc., announced that Carl Wolf has become Chairman of MediaBay. Mr. Wolf was appointed Co-Chairman in November 2002 and has rapidly familiarized himself with the operations of MediaBay. Mr. Wolf will assume greater executive responsibilities as Norton Herrick has stepped down as Chairman of MediaBay. · David H. Lipson, Jr., President and Publisher of Philadelphia Magazine and President of Metrocorp, which also owns Metrocorp Publishing, Boston Magazine, and Boston Magazine Publishing, announced key management restructuring in the organization, naming Marian Conicella, previously Associate Publisher of Philadelphia Magazine, as Publisher of Philadelphia and all Metrocorp Publishing publications, and Paul Reulbach, previously Associate Publisher of Boston Magazine, as Publisher of Boston and all Boston Magazine Publishing publications. David Lipson will remain company President, in charge of strategic planning and new project development, and D. Herbert Lipson will remain company Chairman. In addition, Frederick (Rick) Waechter, COO/CFO of Metrocorp, will now be expanding his role to oversee all day-to-day operations management of the company as well as all financial and administrative functions. Dan Scully has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Boston Magazine. · PBI Media, LLC announced that Jim McKenna has been named editor-in-chief of Rotor & Wing and conference chair of Emergency Response 2003 Conference and Trade Show. Jim brings more than 15 years of experience in all aspects of the aviation industry to the positions. Jim has been a featured speaker at professional meetings and conferences, including those conducted by the Aerospace Industries Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and SAE Aerospace. Jim, formerly the managing editor of Aviation Maintenance magazine has consulted on aviation related media issues for the FAA, CNN and the Flight Safety Foundation. Jim is a licensed pilot, a certified EMT and volunteer fireman. · International Data Group (IDG), a technology media company, has announced the appointment of Rick LePage to president and editorial director of Mac Publishing LLC, publisher of Macworld, a magazine for the Apple Macintosh industry. Following a period as vice president, business development and general manager of CreativePro.com, LePage was appointed editor in chief of Macworld in 2001. In his new role, LePage will be responsible for Macworld magazine and its associated online properties, Macworld.com and MacCentral.com, as well as Linuxworld.com and Javaworld.com, which are also managed by Mac Publishing. · Gannett Co., Inc. has announced five promotions on its headquarters staff: Thomas L. Chapple, senior vice president and general counsel, has added the title and duties of chief administrative officer. Jose A. Berrios, vice president/staffing and diversity has been named vice president/human resources and diversity. Roxanne V. Horning, vice president/employee benefits, has been named vice president/compensation and benefits. Todd A. Mayman, senior legal counsel, has been named vice president/associate general counsel and secretary. David P. Fleming, also a senior legal counsel, has added the title of general counsel/Gannett Broadcasting Division. · NewsStand Inc., a digital distributor for print media publishers, announced that Myles Fuchs has joined the executive team as senior vice president of sales. Prior to NewsStand, Fuchs worked for more than 20 years in key sales and marketing and management positions. He most recently served as vice president of sales and business development for CareerBuilder.com. In his new role, Fuchs' responsibilities will include the development and implementation of strategic business and sales initiatives for existing and new business sectors; managing relationships with key publishing partners and overseeing sales for both international and domestic markets. · Barnes & Noble, Inc. has announced that Larry Zilavy, Chief Financial Officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc., has been appointed Executive Vice President of Corporate Finance and Strategic Planning, reporting to Leonard Riggio, Chairman of Barnes & Noble, Inc. Joseph Lombardi, Vice President and Controller of the company, has been named the company's Chief Financial Officer. Both appointments will be effective on May 1. Mr. Zilavy joined Barnes & Noble in June 2002 as Chief Financial Officer following a 25-year career in banking, which began at the former Chase Manhattan Bank. In his new position, he will be responsible for all corporate finance functions, including all banking and investment-banking relationships and acquisition activities. He will also oversee the company's public investments, including Barnes & Noble.com, GameStop and, along with Chief Executive Officer, Steve Riggio, Barnes & Noble's investments in publishing, including Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. and iUniverse. In addition, Mr. Zilavy will assist Chairman Riggio with his governance responsibilities on the boards of Barnes & Noble, Inc., Barnes & Noble.com, and GameStop. Mr. Lombardi joined Barnes & Noble in May 2002 as Vice President and Controller. He spent eleven years at Ernst & Young where he served as a partner in its Consumer Products Practice. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble he was Chief Financial Officer at The Museum Company Inc. · The Society of American Business Editors and Writers elected eight new board members, including six to full three-year terms, at its 40th annual conference last Monday. The organization's four new officers also began their duties with Monday's board meeting. They include: syndicated columnist Kathy Kristof as president; Fort Worth Star-Telegram Managing Editor for News Rex Seline as vice president; Jonathan Lansner, business columnist at The Orange County Register as secretary; and Becky Bisbee, business editor at The Seattle Times, as editor of The Business Journalist. MSN Money Managing Editor Charley Blaine was appointed to a one-year term and Craig Schwed, managing editor for business, technology and sports at Gannett News Service was appointed to a two-year term. Also Monday, SABEW presented lifetime achievement awards to James K. Gentry, dean and professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas; and Randall D. Smith, assistant managing editor at The Kansas City Star. Content Deals · MSNBC.com, MSNBC Cable and NBC News, The Washington Post, Newsweek and Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive have renewed their alliance to share news material and technological and promotional resources. The alliance was originally announced in November of 1999. As part of the alliance, Newsweek's website will remain on MSNBC.com, but its domain name will change from Newsweek.MSNBC.com to Newsweek.com on MSNBC. The co-branded Newsweek site includes the entire weekly magazine, posted on Sunday mornings, plus daily features including Web-exclusive columns from Howard Fineman, Jonathan Alter and breaking news. Under the renewed agreement, MSNBC.com has continued access to content from The Washington Post newspaper and washingtonpost.com. Similarly, washingtonpost.com and Newsweek have continued access to NBC News multimedia content, including broadcast, cable and the Internet coverage. Journalists from The Washington Post and Newsweek appear regularly on NBC News and MSNBC Cable. · Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. has announced that it is building a new omnimedia brand, "Petkeeping with Marc Morrone," as part of the MSO brand family. The new how-to brand, dedicated to the care and keeping of pets in the home, will use MSO's omnimedia business model to showcase the talent of nationally known petkeeping expert Marc Morrone. In making the announcement, MSO's Chairman and CEO, Martha Stewart, said that MSO's independent production unit, Martha Stewart Living Television, will produce a new weekly half-hour syndicated program, Petkeeping with Marc Morrone. The first season consists of 22 weekly shows comprised of original segments as well as selected repackaged petkeeping segments from Marc's appearances on Martha Stewart Living. Petkeeping with Marc Morrone builds on the audience of Marc's current show, The Pet Shop with Marc Morrone. The new Petkeeping with Marc Morrone brand will be supported with a microsite, petkeeping.com. · Kingdom Ventures, Inc., a church development company, announced that it has acquired the Christian Times' South Texas Edition. Christian Times is the largest regional Christian newspaper chain in the U.S. with a monthly circulation of over 200,000 copies through more than 6,000 churches and Christian retail outlets. The South Texas edition has been in publication for just over a year, and has circulation of 25,000, with hundreds of churches, bookstores, and other retail outlets for its primary distribution. · MediaSpan Group, Inc., a provider of software and Internet new-media programs for newspapers and radio stations, announced that it has acquired FMW Works, Inc. d/b/a First MediaWorks. Based in San Clemente, CA, First MediaWorks is the provider of online programs and marketing solutions for radio stations, currently serving more than 1,500 broadcast properties worldwide. With the addition of First MediaWorks, MediaSpan will enhance its presence in the radio market and will further complement its HarrisBaseview Division, which has more than 2,900 newspaper and print customers. · International Data Group (IDG), a technology media company, announced that IDG Netherlands reached an agreement with HCC, the largest Dutch association of computer users, to acquire HCC Media. IDG will gain gaming magazines: PCZone Benelux, GameQuest, PlayNation, DVDNation, and FlightZone. Together with Computer! Totaal, Tips&Trucs, Internet Tips&Trucs and ZOOM Magazine, IDG Netherlands now reaches more than 1.6 million Dutch technology readers. Launches and Redesigns · NYTimes.com announced that it has launched DriveTimes, a weekly email newsletter and editorial feature with industry news and auto reviews from The New York Times. Written in a compendium format, DriveTimes will be both a weekly email and a feature on the autos section of the website, with links to top stories from other auto publications and websites including Edmunds.com. · R.R. Bowker, a publisher of bibliographic information, has introduced a Web-based subscription product of Spanish language books, audiobooks and videos available at spanishbooksinprint.com. Spanishbooksinprint.com users will be able to locate Spanish language materials published in the U.S., Spain and Mexico that are carried by U.S.-based suppliers. In addition to title data and availability, Spanishbooksinprint.com also offers additional content such as reviews, cover images, annotations, author biographies, awards and bestsellers. Miscellaneous · Target Stores will be the presenting sponsor of the 2003 Chicago Tribune Printers Row Book Fair. The Fair -- the largest free outdoor literary event in the Midwest -- is expected to draw more than 80,000 book lovers to the two-day showcase, set in Chicago's historic Printers Row neighborhood and scheduled for June 7-8. This year's Fair is expanding from its traditional street locations into the adjacent Dearborn Park, where the Target Family Area will feature events and programming for the young and young at heart. Barney, Angelina Ballerina and the PBS KIDS "Share a Story" Stage Show are among the children's characters scheduled to perform.
