People

· Commonwealth Business Media announced the appointment of Robyn Nissim to the position of Editor of The Florida Shipper magazine. She will play a key role in the company's plans to develop the content and regional focus of the weekly magazine, which serves as a resource for the Florida international transportation community. She will be based in the company's Miramar, Florida office and report to Peter Tirschwell, Editorial Director for The Journal of Commerce Shipper Group, which includes The Florida Shipper, as well as The Journal of Commerce, Pacific Shipper, Shipping Digest and Gulf Shipper magazines. Robyn most recently served as Senior Vice President of Communications for the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.

· National Lampoon has announced that the company is continuing its expansion under its new senior management team by naming Sheri Kelton to the new post of Vice President of Creative Development. Kelton, a well-known talent manager who helped develop a roster of comedy hits, including Everybody Loves Raymond, The Hughleys and the annual HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, will work closely with management on National Lampoon's creative development of projects for the company's full range of media, including live events, film, TV, Internet and print.

· Primedia Inc., a targeted media company, announced that Robert Metz, (50), has been promoted to Executive Vice President. With this promotion, Mr. Metz will maintain his current roles and responsibilities within Primedia as a Corporate Officer and President & CEO of Primedia's Consumer Guide Group. Prior to joining Primedia, Mr. Ritts was Chairman and CEO of Digital Entertainment Network (DEN) and before that, served as Commissioner of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA.) He was co-founder of Channel One News in 1989, and he began his career at the New York advertising agency, Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, Inc.

· The Board of Directors of the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) has named Janice Honeyman-Buck, PhD as the new editor-in-chief of The Journal of Digital Imaging (JDI), the official publication of the Society. She succeeds Steven C. Horii, MD, who served as editor in 2001 and 2002.

· Harcourt Educational Measurement, a Harcourt Assessment company, announced that former South Dakota Secretary of Education Ray Christensen has joined the company as senior director for program management. Christensen is well known for bringing technology to schools. In 1996, South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow tapped him to coordinate the state's Wiring the Schools program, a major initiative that brought the Internet and elearning to schools throughout the state.

· Four executive appointments were announced recently in the Newspaper Division of Gannett Co., Inc.
  • Margaret E. Buchanan was named president and publisher of The Cincinnati Enquirer. She previously was president and publisher of The Idaho Statesman in Boise.
  • Leslie J. Hurst succeeds Buchanan in Boise. She previously was president and publisher of The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, WV.
  • Elizabeth (Pat) Thompson Frantz succeeds Hurst in Huntington. She previously was president and publisher of the Great Falls (MT) Tribune.
  • James V. Strauss succeeds Frantz in Great Falls. He previously was executive editor of the Tribune.
· Jacques D. Kerrest has resigned his position as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Harte-Hanks Inc. Kerrest is leaving to become Chief Financial Officer of Equant. A national search is underway for his replacement. Harte-Hanks Inc., San Antonio, Texas, is a worldwide, direct and targeted marketing company that provides direct marketing services and shopper advertising opportunities to local, regional, national and international consumer and business-to-business marketers.

· Salem Communications, a radio broadcaster focused on religious and family-themed programming, has announced that Dave Armstrong, Regional Vice President of Operations and General Manager for Salem of Los Angeles, will be relocating to New York to oversee Salem's radio operations in the northeast. With this move, Armstrong will serve as General Manager for WMCA-AM and WWDJ-AM in New York, and also assume operational oversight for Salem's stations in the Boston market. Armstrong has been a General Manager for Salem Communications since 1994 and played a large role in the creation of Salem's contemporary Christian music format, The Fish.

Digital Publishing

· BookExpo America in partnership with the Open eBook Forum will premier The eBook Experience, a learning environment featuring hands-on displays of the latest digital reading devices, software, services and eBook titles in a coordinated series of exhibits at BookExpo America. The special interactive center will be located prominently in the Concourse Foyer and is free to all registered attendees. The eBook Experience and all presentation sessions are free of charge to BookExpo America attendees. Sessions run Friday, May 30; Saturday, May 31; and Sunday, June 1, 2003.

Content Deals

· The May Department Stores Company and Hearst Magazines announced a license agreement to jointly market a wide variety of home merchandise with the House Beautiful trademark. The House Beautiful merchandise, with products ranging from home decor to textiles to dinnerware, will be offered beginning in 2005 in May's 362 full-line department stores nationwide.

· Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business media company, announced that its Cygnus Publishing division has acquired Finishing & Restoration magazine from Woodland Hills, California's McCloskey Communications. The publication has been serving the wood finishing and restoration market for six years and adds to Cygnus Publishing's Building and Home Products segment which reaches over 300,000 industry professionals. Finishing & Restoration will be overseen by Group Publisher Tony Dellamaria who also manages Wood Digest, Solid Surface Magazine and Surfacing Solutions. Finishing & Restoration is a bi-monthly magazine that reaches 15,000 readers in the industrial, professional and advanced amateur sectors who finish and restore wood and wood products. The magazine will be strategically aligned with Wood Digest and its online portal Woodworkingpro.com.

Launches and Redesigns

· Bizjournals, the new media division of American City Business Journals, a publisher of metropolitan business newspapers, has launched a redesign of its 43 websites. The sites, will increase their coverage of local business and community news and add new features for advertisers.

· Christopher Lowell, the Emmy Award-winning host and motivating force behind the Discovery Channel's The Christopher Lowell Show, provides paint project ideas on Paintideas.com, a site designed to inspire DIYers to get creative with their own projects. As the Paintideas.com guest designer, Lowell will share 12 paint projects through August 31, 2003. Each project provides step-by-step instructions for transforming everyday items into decorative home accents.

· Green Car Journal Special Edition is a new full-color consumer magazine that intends to demystify the advanced technologies and vehicles that are bringing a new level of environmental performance to new car showrooms. The magazine is a new launch by the publisher of the Green Car Journal industry newsletter Green Car Journal Special Edition provides a forum for serious and even-handed technology and policy discussions amid colorful layouts and exciting feature stories about fuel cell vehicles, alternative fuels, high-performance hybrids, and production vehicles.

· The launch of Nurse Recruitment and Retention monthly newsletter has been announced by PubWorld, Inc. The periodical provides advice and best practices for attracting and keeping an adequate staff of talented nurses, despite the current nursing shortage. The target audience includes hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, ambulatory facilities, and any other healthcare entity in which nurses play a vital role. PubWorld, Inc. is an independent, privately held national medical newsletter publishing company headquartered in Naples, Fla. The Managing Editor is Peggy Mattern and the Vice President-Development for this newsletter is Ann "Rainey" Norins.

· Espresso Fiction is a new service for fiction readers. Espresso Fiction delivers short stories by email on a weekly basis. Espresso Fiction is ideal for "time poor" individuals who would normally read novels but find it impractical and yet miss the buzz they get from reading a good story. Miscellaneous

· With one month remaining before its release, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) has already surpassed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) as Amazon.com's largest new product release ever, with more than 500,000 copies ordered in just four months. Amazon has received more than 875,000 orders for the book on all of its websites worldwide (including amazon.com ). Previously Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was Amazon.com's largest new product release, with more than 350,000 orders placed on amazon.com in the five months leading up to its July 8, 2000 release, and 410,000 copies ordered in advance of its release on Amazon sites worldwide.

· The San Diego Daily Transcript newspaper is changing its banner and masthead back to The Daily Transcript, a name it operated under from 1886 to 1972. Covering all major vertical industry sectors, including real estate, construction, finance, law, technology and general business, the paper has grown to be one of the largest daily business newspapers in the state. The name change reflects the reality of the newspaper's evolution as a news, data and information source serving all of the business community of San Diego County and the surrounding region. The name change affects only the newspaper. The company, under present ownership, will continue to operate as the San Diego Daily Transcript Co., and its website remains the San Diego Source.
