Posted on May 30, 2003

The Taunton Press has announced the launch of Inspired House, a new magazine for readers who want to design and personalize their homes. Taunton, the publisher behind magazine like Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding and Fine Cooking, will launch the consumer home design space magazine on October 14, 2003.

Inspired House will be a perfect-bound glossy measuring 9"x11" and carrying approximately 100 pages. Published bimonthly, Inspired House launches with a guaranteed circulation of 180,000 and a cover price of $5.99.

A multi-media launch, Inspired House debuts with a companion television show, The Inspired House, currently being produced in conjunction with WTTW public television in Chicago, and slated to air in 2004. The Inspired House is a weekly, 30-minute show that will produce 13 episodes in its first season. The Taunton Press is also developing a series of Inspired House-themed books.

Inspired House helps readers explore how to use the core principles of architecture, decorating and interior design to make informed choices about their own homes. Inspired House was developed as "the antidote to the 'McMansion' and everything it stands for," said Editor-in-Chief Marc Vassallo. Also an architect and writer, Vassallo has been a member of the Inspired House team since its inception. He joined Taunton in 1995.

Contributing writers include Sarah Susanka, the award-winning architect and best-selling author of The Not So Big House, Creating the Not So Big House and Not So Big Solutions for Your Home and John Connell, the Vermont-based architect, founder of the Yestermorrow Design/Build School and host of the The Inspired House television show.

"At Inspired House we're devoted to the full home design experience: the learning, the trial, the errors, the elements of design that allow homeowners to put more of themselves and their families into their homes," said Vassallo. "It's not enough for us to present an end result and simply pass judgment on it; we want to help people understand why certain design ideas work the way they do and help them use that knowledge to personalize their own homes."
