High-tech publisher Extension Media has launched Chip Design, a print magazine targeted at engineers and engineering managers developing advanced semiconductor designs. The publication's first issue will be out in September, on an every-other-month schedule. An online version will be available at the Extension Media website.

"We believe strongly that this market deserves a dedicated publication, and based on conversations with potential advertisers, we believe the industry will support it," said Vince Ridley, president of Extension Media and publisher of Chip Design. "Just to offer one example of the viability of this market, a leading-edge design team will spend over $150,000 per engineer, per year on EDA tools. Vendors will want to reach IC engineers and managers through the most targeted publication in the industry."

Each issue of Chip Design will provides articles on such subjects as verification, tool interoperability, power control and reduction, design for verification, design for manufacturing, changes in design languages, and the need for higher levels of abstraction in system design. Chip designer and EDA publishing veteran Tets Maniwa will serve as editor-in-chief.

Tets Maniwa, editor-in-chief of Chip Design, holds a BSEE from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from St. Mary's College. He spent ten years as an engineer in semiconductor and product design. After completing his MBA, he spent ten years in applications engineering, marketing, and sales. Maniwa has served as the editor of Integrated System Design magazine and the director of content for the EDA website EEdesign.com, both CMP Media properties. Most recently, he served as editor-in-chief of Netronics magazine, a property of Penton.
