2002 Bram Stoker Award Winners Announced
Each year, the Horror Writers Association presents the Bram
Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of
the seminal horror work, Dracula. The awards are presented at the HWA Annual
Conference and Bram Stoker Award banquet in New York City. This year’s event was
held at the Park Central Hotel on the evening of Saturday, June 8th.
The awards are presented in twelve categories: Novel, First Novel, Short Fiction,
Long Fiction, Fiction Collection, Poetry Collection, Anthology, Nonfiction, Illustrated
Narrative, Screenplay, Work for Young Readers, and Alternative Forms.
2002 Bram Stoker Award Winners
- Novel: The Night Class by Tom Piccirilli
- First Novel: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
- Long Fiction: El Dia De Los Muertos by Brian A. Hopkins (Tie),
"My Work Is Not Yet Done" by Thomas Ligotti (Tie)
- Short Fiction: "The Misfit Child Grows Fat on Despair" by Tom Piccirilli
- Fiction Collection: One More for the Road by Ray Bradbury
- Anthology: The Darker Side edited by John Pelan
- Nonfiction: Ramsey Campbell, Probably by Ramsey Campbell
- Illustrated Narrative: Nightside (Issues 1-4) by Robert Weinberg
- Screenplay: Frailty by Brent Hanley
- Work for Young Readers: Coraline by Neil Gaiman
- Poetry Collection: The Gossamer Eye by Mark McLaughlin, Rain Graves, and
David Niall Wilson
- Alternative Forms: Imagination Box (multimedia CD) by Steve and Melanie Tem
Lifetime Achievement Awards were also given to Stephen King and to Jerry
Williamson for their extraordinary contributions to the genre. Over the last thirty
years both men have published more than 30 horror novels each, in addition to vast
amounts of short fiction. Their impact on modern horror writing has been
incalculable.
